Title: Hard disk utilities.

Just wondering what all of you use to format non-Apple drives out there.

I've got a 4.3 SCSI Fujitsu that I would really like to initialize and install 9.1 on, but I don't really want to pay $60 for a copy of HD Toolkit that I'll likely use only once or twice at best.

Any ideas on freeware/shareware out there?

Why not just use OS 9's Drive Setup Utility?

Drive Setup sees it as an unsupported drive.

That was why I was looking at HD Toolkit, or something a little more reasonable.

I'm not sure if they will work, but I downloaded one of those apps.

As long as it works with this unsupported drive, I don't care what program it is.

I've used pdisk with PPC Linux.

Unfortunately, according to the docs, it only supports creation of Linux-type partitions.

Bummer.    

Oh well, I'll have to try the one I found.

I bought HDTool kit 2.7 and the CDDVDspeed tools 5.1 for $60...but You can (or could) get just the HDTool kit for $30. I haven't upgraded it in awhile.

Both have been invaluable to me. Lots of features.

CDDVD brought a malfunctioning CD drive back to life and I use it for my burner's driver also...with Toast.

Don't mean to preach...I like crabgrass also.

cdub1988, there was a Mac version of pdisk many years ago, I don't know if development continued. I'm not sure if an old version would be the thing to use on that drive. Best to look for something else.

Did you get the drive formated and working yet?

I couldn't find it for cheaper than $50.

kps-
pdisk didn't take. Will only do Linux partitions and the drive is formatted FAT32.

I need something like HD Toolkit, but I may be out of luck.

Have been thinking that I may install the latest build of Yellow Dog Linux on that drive anyways (if I can ever get it downloaded and burned)    

I tried Jag and liked it, but of course, my hardware wasn't sufficient, so..........I'll say hello to Linux.

I like it's install and it works. well.

CD1988,

I have HD ST 3.5 that works for OS 9.2.2. However, while it will work within OS X, one must open it in Classic. In tech has been very slow in upgrading HD ST to OS X. I feel I am stuck since I have 13 partitions while Apple's Drive Setup only allows a max of 9 partitions. Relying on  using HD ST within OS 9.2.2 worries me as Apple will probably completely abandon OS 9 in the next 3 - 5 years.

So, if you can live with a Classic version, by all means get HD ST. It will see Drive Setup formatted drives even those within OS X.
