Title: Racing game crashes in OSX
Post by: krissel on March 24, 2003, 10:07:00 AM
I've been to the gamers sites to see if anyone else has had this problem (nope) but anyway I think it is a more likely something system-wise.

I installed the demo of F1Championship 2000 on my Dad's eMac and it played just fine for several tries. Next day my Dad said it wouldn't load for play.  When I visited I saw that the program opened OK and ran until the game went to load the track and the graphics at which point it quit. I trashed the prefs in the data folder and the game and installed a new one, same problem. Loaded the game from a different source, same thing.

Console and crash logs are as follows:

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0X0001)
Codes:      KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000

> Thread 0 Crashed:
>  #0   0x002a89d0 in 0x2a89d0
>  #1   0x001ab700 in LoadCameraConfig__10GameObjectFP10CameraDataPc
>  #2   0x001ae18c in 0x1ae18c
>  #3   0x0026e288 in Server__10GameObjectFv

>  #5   0x001f7380 in DoGameLoop

>  #7   0x901493e8 in __CFRunLoopRun

>  #11  0x92bf24f4 in _AcquireNextEvent
>  #12  0x92cb434c in RunApplicationEventLoop
>  #13  0x001f6e58 in main

The next four threads load OK.

The other log reports:

Computer WindowServer[386]: CGXDisabelUpdate: Updates disabled by connection 0x6e03 for over 1.000000 seconds

Computer/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contests/MacOs/Finder: kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSSetWindowDepth: Invalid window type
--------

It appears as though the program is sending instructions to the Mac to get the video settings for the game but it is barfing at the request. I did try to open the app in Classic and run it there but it also quit.

BTW, I can run it just fine on my 9600/9.1

Any suggestions on what to try or things to dump?

Krissel,

I wish I had a clue.

Maybe Kps will come along soon. He seems to know what a lot about the 10 stuff.

That's one of the problems I have with UNIX. Understanding what you can trash and what you can't.

When you say it crashed, what did it do? just stop working?

One other question I have is : What exactly do you do after you have a crash in OSX? Do you,run Diskwarrior or some other program?

Thanks for replying  Gary.

When an application quits in X you get a message to that effect with the added tidbit that all other system resources are OK. At least you don't take down the whole system.

However, after these quits I did a permissions fix from Disk Utility which seemed to fix thousands of problems. But other things started to act up, including a major slowdown of screen redraw and would not allow the Trash to be emptied.  At some point it was recommended that the system be reinstalled (I think it was in Console, don't remember) or to perform some operation in Terminal. Being the chicken that I am, I opted to reinstall the system. After doing that I ran the permission fix from the X disk rather than the hard drive and that at least put the machine back in good order. Everything works just as it did previous to the game install.

But it still won't run the game.

Hi Krissel,

What version of the demo is that?

Try contacting Ferel about this, I think they may have a update for the demo.  Latest demo version is 1.0.2

Krissel,
What version of OSX is on the eMac?

Al,  I have the latest 1.02 demo.

 Gary , eMac has 10.2.
I will be upgrading to 10.4 when Dad get a wheel cause force feedback was implemented in the latest update.

The aggravating thing is that it ran fine for several runs then on next boot wouldn't work. Got to be something OS related or prefs, but what?

Am emailing support at Feral but don't know if they will respond considering it's a demo.

Well, Gary, I don't have a clue either.

Games tend to do strange things, like take over the screen, change the display resolution, mess with your sound, install a bzillion files...it's always something. It wants this version of OpenGL, that version of something else...

krissel, did this game install anything in any of the /Library/Application Support directories? Check either in the root lib or the user lib.

Hmmm....

Just came across this:

http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/2003/03/24/feral/

A new patch for the game.

Ah kps, I saw that patch too.  But it for the retail version, not the demo.

I had problems when I first bought this game and ferel directed me to a patch that cured it with my racing wheel.

Not sure what's up with your demo Krissel, sorry I'm not any more help.

Just to update:  heard back from Feral today and they want as much info regarding the problem as possible as they have not encountered this particular situation before. I'm going to send them complete ASP and Console reports from the eMac when I next visit my folks.

Nice to know they are responsive. Will let you all know if this gets resolved.

You know the old story about having a toothache and pleading to get an appointment with the dentist only to finally arrive at the office and the ache is gone???

I arrived at my folks ready to troubleshoot. I reinstalled the game one more time, fired it up and....
...it worked.

I didn't do anything different from the last time I was there, except maybe not swear. I did save the game crash log with the info from the previous quits and will send it off to the programmers but I kind of feel like the kid who cried wolf.
I was almost disappointed that it ran OK, though time will tell if the problem crops up again.

kelly , thanks for the heads-up. I ordered the full game (and a Logitech MOMO wheel) for my Dad.

Vroom, vroooom!
