Title: They found the problem with my G4
Post by: Gary S on March 21, 2003, 03:22:00 PM
Through the process of elimination they seem to have found the problem with the G4-933 I bought and was having kernel panics with.

It turned out to be the processor. They ordered a new one, put iy in and was able to update the machine to 10.2.4. It's been running for 5 hours without a KP.

That's great news Gary. Thanks for posting the 'solution." I never would have figured it out, but rather, would have been content to BIOB!

Glad to hear it Gary! Now comes the fun part - we hope!

Given everything that had been tried, I'm not surprised that it turned out to be a major hardware item.

Harv

Hey Harv, who do you think put the original processor in????

Gary, that's great to hear. I hope it's smooth sailing from now on!

Harv,
What does BIOB mean.

The computer is still in the shop....I hope it's still running.

Maybe I can pick it up tommorrow or Monday.

Since it was a refurb from Apple, and Apple had put a new mobo in it they went from there thinking the mobo was alright.

They swapped HDD's, Superdrives, you name it until the only thing left was the processor. They put a new one in and it took the 10.2 upgrade.

Paddy,

Now the fun starts......I hope    I do hope that's all it is. I asked the repair guy to let it run all night so.......we'll see.

Kelly,
Your probably right.
They probably have a LAN party going tonight.

Although when I went to take it in one guy had 4 HDD hooked up to one of those MDDs and was transfering data to it for someone who had purchased it. He had it laying open there and I got a good look inside. Then the fan kicked in and I had to cover my ears.

The one thing that I was impressed with was how professional the outfit was. All business.

It's mostly a service center. They only have an eMac and an iMac on display and the display area isn't too big.

BIOB. I blanked.
And I always wear my seatbelt!

Good news,  Gary!

Thanks Krissel,

I do think I'll either buy another HDD and put a regular bootable full version of 9.2.2 on it or partition. Just so I feel at home.

The service guy wasn't too keen on partitioning for some reason. I think he goes by the book....which one , I don't know.

Believe it or not, I didn't feel at home the short time I was in OS X but It will be fun messing around and becoming aquainted with it.

I'd really feel much more comfortable with at least a partitioned disk.

Jeez Kelly,

You might really be right! I called this morning to pick it up and the owner said they have it on the bench and they are still testing it.........running iTunes and other programs.

They must like it.
I'd rather they test it as much as they can.

Glad your machine is fixed...

A bad processor, who would have guessed. Now get on over there and bring it home.

Have you entertained the idea of picking up a second drive (considering that was-is your game plan) sence they have your machine now. They could slap it in all in one swoop?
Then again it isn't that hard to do and the warranty might not cover the installation of a second drive.
Just a hair brain thought anyhoo.

"entertained"?

You people are trying to civilize me or what?!? /choke .. koff, koff

Gary,

I'm glad you got your computer problems fixed!

I don't know about you but I've been pretty happy with Apple support lately. I purchased my G4 last August. It was a basket case right out of the box, but Apple went through it with a fine tooth comb and corrected all the problems. Now it's a solid machine.

Bill,
I am going to put a second drive in.

I thought about having "Happy Mac" do it but at $100.00 an hour I thought twice about it.

Anyways, I think I'll pick up a Western Digital and put it in.

The repairman Doug calls me yesterday and says it's fixed and that it was the processor then I call this morning and the owner, Chuck says it's not ready-they're running iTunes and other programs on it.

Now I'm wondering if something happened overnight!

Yeah, $100.00 an hour.

Man am I glad it's under Warrenty. Otherwise I'd be sitting here with a dead computer.

When i first talked with him he said if it was a hardware issue it would be covered but if it was a software issue there would be some charges.
I haven't even muttered the word software to him since.

Gary, if you get a WD drive, make sure it's one of the Special Edition versions with the 8MB cache and the three year warranty. The other ones only have a 2MB cache and a 1 year warranty. Most IDE drives only have 1 year warranties these days - read the fine print! My WD (120GB) was $129 at CompUSA on sale, with rebate - it's been functioning flawlessly since installation.

NewEgg.com has the 120GB Special Edition for $136 and free shipping. The 80GB Special edition is $98. That was the best price I could find for both.

I think they just want to play with your G4 over the weekend...

Paddy,
I saw those WDs at Best Buy with the 8mb cache. Nice with the 3 year warranty and the rebate. I'm so cash poor right now it may have to wait till next week.

I think they just want to play with your G4 over the weekend...

Well if they are I hope they're having fun.

Al,

They were the first one's I called. I talked to the woman who sold me the computer and told her of my troubles. She said she was sorry and that things like that sometimes happen. She gave me Apple's number and faxed something to them, gave me the telephone number of the nearest Apple Service Center and told me their tech would call me the next day. I called Apple and got the machine in the next day to the local service center.

Their Tech called the next day and when I told him I had it in for service he said he had another call to make.

About the only good thing i can say about PowerMAX is that they were able to locate the model I wanted and the salesperson had a nice voice.

I don't think I would do business with them again unless I needed something I couldn't find anywhere else.

There's a useful principle I've always followed with any new electronics.

As soon as it's set-up, run it continuously for 3-4 weeks (no sleep, no nuthin'). Most anything that can fail early in the life of electronics will do so in the first 750 hours, or so.

We're doing so with our new Cinema Display, without incident.

Good luck.

Hope All is going well. My 933 i got from Power Max is fine. The lady was very nice and helpfull. My Jaguar was missing both Disks, they sent them to me. The only problem is my internal modem set at V90 is low , only about 22.8. Sometimes 33.0. My external on a 6500 is  mostly 33 t0 44. Don't know if there is a fix. How's yours? . My 933 came with 9.2.2 and 10.0. With 10.24 in the bag. How about yours?.

Update.

I picked it up late Monday and they said it was fixed so.....

Yesterday I had to run a grounding wire on the circuit its on and so forth.

My backs been sore so I have to take it easy with it but I'm expecting to at least fire it up today and see how it runs.

I'm still trying to figure out a HDD strategy as far as partitioning and a second drive. I'll start a new thread after I get it started and see how it works.

BTW, The paperwork I got from the repair shop listed the new 933 processor as costing $409.47. I'm glad it was under Applecare.

Kps.
I'm finding new things in X all the time. Some cool, some not.
Like I've found I'm superior to the chess game. I know where the 'off' switch is.
