Title: Noisey G4 solution
Post by: Xairbusdriver on February 24, 2003, 05:17:00 PM
If you have one of those shiny new G4's and don't care for the noise, here is a solution from Apple.

Or you could just send it to me, I'll pay all the freight!

Well, sure! Hide this info under some strange, off-the-wall title! What do you want me to do, search the message texts, too?!

"reduce the operating accoustic level"????

LOL. They go so far as to say that this is a fix to make things quieter, without so much as admitting that the darn things are actually NOISY or LOUD. Steve's RDF hard at work again...

Apple has started shipping the fan kits!

Hope mine arrives soon. I read on the Apple Discussion forums that the kit makes a nice difference.

Saw this at the dealmac Forum.

A before and after.

Also. An interesting Super Quiet PC project.

He got it down to 14 db.

"For reference, here are a few readings for some everyday events.

*   Rocket launching: 180 dB
*   Jet taking off: 140 dB
*   Air raid siren: 125 dB
*   Threshold of pain for human ear: 120 dB
*   Loud rock music at a concert: 115 dB
*   Level where ear damage starts: 85 dB
*   Busy street: 70 dB
*   Normal conversation: 60 dB
*   Yoshi's cubicle: 46 dB
*   Library: 40 dB
*   Rustling leaves: 30 dB
*   Yoshi's movie room (no movie showing): 24 dB
*   Soft whisper: 20 dB
*   Threshold of sound perception: 10 dB
*   Threshold of human hearing: 0 dB

Test results

I used a Larson Davis 824 sound-level meter. It's very easy to use.

*   Stock OEM PC: 38 dB
*   Laptop (with fan on): 42 dB
*   Yoshi's Project YS-2: 8 dB (120 Hz and above), 14 dB (100 Hz and below)"

I will be interested in the Verax modification for the G4. According to the German company, the "Veraxed Mac" whispers at only 0.9 sone.

I tried to figure out what 0.9 sone means in dB, but it's too foreign to me. One site I found had some comparison figures which leads me to believe that 0.9 sone is about 25 - 30 dB.

The price for the Verax system has yet to be determined. Some guess it will be approximately $100 to $150 US. The Verax company is trying to get Apple to sanction the kit so that people won't void their warranties if they install the kit.

That QT movie showed the G4 while it was asleep. The one I heared was in a shop and it wasn't that bad until the processor reached a certain temp and the big fan kicked in for a while.

Kind of like the difference between a Euerka and a Hoover.
