One question. This may sound like a stupid question but you know, I've never owned a tower before.
I have limited space in this house. Where do you who have towers put them? On top of a desk, under the desk, on the floor? I'm trying to set up a workspace and bought this nice Amish solid oak computer desk but it's 28" wide with a slide out keyboard thingy. With the 19" monitor on there there isn't alot of room. I kind of dislike keeping the tower on the floor because it's going to collect more dust than it should. Might have to build something to stand it on.
TIA

Mine's on the carpet.
You could get one of these.

To me, desk area is "prime" real estate. Even though I use a corner desk with lots of space, my tower is under the desk.
A friend of mine has a desk with cabinet to one side. Her tower is inside the cabinet and all the wiring goes out a hole in the back.
I have considered building an enclosure for my desk so I can put the tower inside. If the fan replacement kit that Apple is sending out doesn't take care of the noise, I still might try the enclosure.

Gary, I have one of those risers Kelly referenced. As I recall, he first alerted me to that link and I am glad that he did.
According to the mfgr's hype:
Raises the G3/G4 Mini-tower approx. four inches
* Being so elevated significantly reduces dust and dirt uptake by the G3/G4's cooling system
* Providing sufficient space beneath the G3/G4 for operation of a vacuum cleaner brush
* Enhancing the airflow should result in cooler operation and greater system reliability and longevity
* Looking good - the attractive design aesthetically complements the G3/G4's style
* Being of high quality and sturdily made, it will support the G3/G4 Mini-Tower safely and securely
* Outside Dimensions 10 5/8
And (not otherwise mentioned):
* So easy to install, even Bernie can do it! (At least that's the theory.)

These are Mac people! And I can prove it because they have a sense of humor:
quote:
What kinds of worksurfaces can you attach a DeskMount to?
Particle board, fiberboard, Masonite, MDF, OSB, hardwood, plywood, steel, Plexiglas, neutronium, or just about any element from the Periodic Table that is a solid at room temperature and doesn't spontaneously react exothermically with gases normally found in air. Liquids would not be a good bet; don't try to attach your DeskMount to water, especially moving water. Or live animals. Most anything else is fair game, though.

Gary , mine is in a slot in my desk...just off the floor about an inch. However; the riser Kelly , talked of..is a great solution!
-
Gary S,
I built small platforms (two and three inches tall) for the PMs.
Just enough hight to stay off the carpet.
Like you and others have stated,-what room-?
The monitors in either set up take up a lot of space. Not to mention all the other do-hickies ya pick up down the road.
-
The riser is a good idea.
I didn't have one so I used an old wooden biscuit board under the desk just to keep the tower from resting directly on the carpet. The biscuit board was wide enough to also hold the surge protector with all its cords coming out.
-
Thanks everyone.
The riser is nice but I just went and bought a 24"x10" piece of oak particle board that should do nicely....$2.49. Cheap too.
-
Hey, i might get that riser! My B&W is on my desk for easy access to the innerts. But it also resides next to my scanner and to open the B&W I have to move the scanner out of the way. With that riser, it would make my B&W clear my scanner...
My beige tower is on the ground under the other desk.
-
Well, mine's directly on the hardwood floor, under the table next to my desk (not a lot of leeway with cables there...) My desk has drawers on both sides, that only leave about a foot of clearance below, so putting it under the desk isn't an option. With a 22" monitor and shelving around the monitor AND a stack of those plastic paper trays holding my cable modem, router, print server, ethernet 5 port switch, zip drive and CDRW, ON the desk, putting it on the desk wasn't an option either. The table next to the desk has a scanner, inkjet printer, 17" monitor for the PC, so putting it ON that table isn't an option either. It does collect dust - I guess I could elevate it and see if that helps. However, I'm not sure that it collects all that much more dust than the G3 which sits up on a desk - they both get pretty disgusting on a regular basis. Of course, I've never claimed to be Martha Stewart! And I'm sure Martha would be horrified at the plastic paper tray "shelf"...but hey...it works, until such time as I have the TIME to make something prettier!
-
I have nothing to go by...except my gut feel, that Martha Stewart probably isn't a Mac person..oh well her loss!
-
Paddy,
I'm glad you replied. I never thought of you as the Martha Stewart type but some of your posts about networking and how you had a bunch of computers hooked up with a cable on the floor etc., i figured I'd follow your lead!
My first post on OSX.2!
-
I use mine to extend the range of my D-Link wireless router...
Short cables...I hate short cables...they made me put my poor G4 on top. I need a long VGA cable and I don't trust the cheapo cables from some of the large chains.
-
My 9600 is on the floor under a flip-up table that holds the SCSI scanner and external HD. Need it to be within easy reach for access to CD-Rom, internal zip and (gasp) floppy drive. My card reader and USB hub sits on top.
Also needs to be within cable range of the two monitors and short SCSI cable to external burner.
Only oddity is that since it is a vinyl floor, I have a piece of cardboard under the unit so I can easily slide the tower out to an open space when I need to get inside. This old baby is about 35 lbs and doesn't have any handles so it's hard to move easily.
-
Now that is what I would call a normal computer area mess Kps!
Maybe DB or Audone can stop by and find the TV that goes with that remote on the floor.
-
Sure as long they don't drink all my beer...
BTW, Bill, are you seeing something I'm not? You can't even see the floor...which, being littered with power supplies and surge protectors, is messier than the desktop.
-
My mistake Kps.
Thought the remote was on the ground. (note "ground" not floor <gr>).
After looking closer, maybe just ((((maybe)))) behind the chair was possibly just ((((possibly)))) the floor.
Speaking of behind the chair. Is that a glass beer neck sticking up?
-
No Bill, it's a can of "Dust-Off"...
The "remote" is a cell phone being charged.
But, that is a glass of imported Pilsner on the desk.

When I was living in Botswana, on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, my long-suffering Quadra 950 lived on the floor atop two bricks in a water filled trough with a finely perforated plastic sheet sealed with gaffer-tape.
This stopped the ants making a home in it, kept the resident Manitis from being sucked into the vents and withheld the Kalahari duststorms which would permeate every orifice (Domestic and personal!).
The trough was three inches deep and needed topping-up every 24 hours.
In 35-40 © degree temperatures, I always wondered why my "Big Meg" never blew a fuse from perspiration.
Nonetheless, when I left Africa, my 950 arrived here (UK) with about a quarter-inch of fine red-dust 'stuck' to the main board and most other vital components; a clogged floppy and about 500 starved (dead) ants!
Despite living in water and being infested by mother-nature's tribulations, my 950 eventually died when my girl-friend over-loaded the power socket with her hair-drier!!
Its a true story which proves that Macs can cope with just-about-everyting EXCEPT a woman's vanity.
Best Wishes
David L.

Buggy Computers?

Leave it to Tech TV.
"cat urine on the motherboard".
I think that would do it.
-
Gary s,
keep it simple get yourself a piece of one inch thick wood the same footprint as your tower unit and add four casters to the underside of the wood and there you have it, one mobile tower unit.
George.
-
George,
"casters to the underside of the wood", I didn't think of that. Thanks!
Then I can ride it down the sidewalk during the summer too!
-
Dolphin, I hate to disappoint you....but Martha Stewart IS a Mac user!

Mine is on my desk next to my display. It fits pretty well as the height of monitor and G4 is about the same.
I prefer having my computer on the desk because the on-button and CD drive are that way better accessible.
