I bought a second Hard Drive to put in the G4. I bought a Maxtor......it's OK.
While installing it I read my manual and it said that the drives should be in "Cable Select" mode rather than Master and Slave.
The Maxtor had the jumpers already set to Cable Select so I pulled the 60 Gig IBM DeathStar out of the computer and the jumpers were set to "Master".
I reset the jumpers on the IBM to Cable Select and left the Maxtor in Cable Select also.
Is that OK and what's the difference?
One more question: I partitioned the Maxtor in 5 partitions along with OS10 I have quite a few HDD icons on my desktop.
Is there a way to minimize them or hide all or some of them?
I'm used to having HDD icons on my desktop but in OS x they're kind of........large. Does anyone know a site where I could get some nice smaller icons to replace them with?
Thank you very much in advance.

Gary, A bit of help perhaps. Re the large HDD icons on your desktop. They can be made smaller by going to Finder/View/Show View Options and then adjusting the slider at the top window.
For sure others who use customized icons can offer suggestions regarding replacement icons.

Thank you Harv.

If you want to hide the HD icons and work out of the dock, finder > prefs > 'show items on desktop'=uncheck 'Hard disk'.
You can change the HD icons just like you can in 8.6./9xx etc.
I myself work out of the dock and have the dock hidden unless my pointer mouse heads that way. Then the old magnification kicks in.
More breathing room on the DT the better I like it.

I keep my Partitions hidden.
To access them I use GO > Computer.
"Is that OK and what's the difference?"
Master or Slave is set by their location on the IDE Cable.
Great when it works.
-
Hi Gary S,
If you ended up put the drives on separate IDE channels then cable select would be fine. Cable select is basically the same as master single mode from what I gather. Meaning that drive would be the only drive on that one channel.
If both your drives are going on the same IDE channel then you would need to set one to master and the other to slave.
I'm not sure how you hooked up your drives and IDE cables, but it seems to work.

Let me clarify something.
The G4 manual said to do it "Cable Select", that's why I did it that way.
Question: If I did it Master and Slave would my Hard drive Icons from my other Hard drive that houses all the other partitions still show up on the screen while booted to 10.2.4?
i wish i could send you a screen shot but i don't have a Graphics editor on here yet and I can't change my screen shot from a PDF to a JPEG and upload it to my site because i don't have Transmit, my ftp program on here either.

Gary,
From what I've read, if your mac supports Cable Select(and you indicated it did) you're okay...your computer selects Master and Slave based on which Drive is connected to which connector...My G4(a Digital Audio, G4/466) does not support Cable Select, so when I added a Maxtor drive, I left the IBM drive as Master and made the Maxtor drive the Slave...I don't think it makes any difference which is which.
If your G4 manual said to use Cable Select, that's what I'd use.
Just my 2 cents,
Clay

"Question: If I did it Master and Slave would my Hard drive Icons from my other Hard drive that houses all the other partitions still show up on the screen while booted to 10.2.4?"
Yes.
-
OKie Dokie.
Yes they're hooked up to the same cable so I guess it doesn't matter.
Thanks you guys.

Gary S.
If I wanted my HD icons to show on the desktop also to answer your question on running DW 2.1.1. from another partition or drive I .... errrr .... was goofin around and slapped this picture together.
Have a spare OS 9.2.2. in the spare partition also -which I forgot to point towards-

Bill,
I'm not used to working with PDFs. How do you take a screen shot in Jaguar and then change it to a JPEG? Does Photoshop do that?
-
Yup, Photoshop will convert it for you.
-
Thanks Al, I'll try it later!
-
Gary S,after the snapshot in pfd format I just open PS and go from there.
If you wanted to you could use "preview" to change the format from pdf also.
Although that is just another option.
Take the snapshot (com+shift+4 or whatever) and open the pdf with "preview".
Then go up to the menu in preview - file>export.
Examples: One and Two.
Like I said ... just another option because if you wanted to 'shine' it up some, you'd have to run it through PS,painter etc etc anyhow.
-
Hey Bill,
Thanks alot. You Da Man! I didn't know you could do that with Preview. I loaded Photoshop Elements 2 on it today and it worked well.
There's alot I have to learn about OSX.2! I feel like such a clutz sitting in front of that screen sometimes not knowing what to do, then I go to the books and ........well ......get a little confused. I haven't had alot of time to read.

Sorry it took so long ta get back... was over on the test board. I also had the theme changed to subsilver from lastnight.
Now both themes look the same.
Yeah Gary, you'll find all sorts of neat stuff in Jag.
I use my backup Jag to scout around. Every so often I do some dumb stunt and spend three times the time trying to fix my goof. <gr>
Most of the time I just run here or where ever and do a search ****HOW DO I****tricks.
