Title: OT - one for Al - why the Union Jack?

I have vague memories from school lessons (half a century ago     ) that Hawaii was at one time linked to Britain (colony, protectorate?) but when the US took it over why did they keep the Union Jack as part of the flag? Just curious about what could be a fascinating bit of history...

Yes, for a brief time we were linked to Britain a very long time ago.  Or should I say our Independance was challenged by the Brits back in 1843.
