Title: BWG3, new processor & HD
Post by: hingyfan on April 19, 2003, 02:49:00 AM
Well i got the Powerlogix 800 processor into my BWG3 and i guess it's OK. I didnt get very far at all on the addition of my 120 OWC HD.
The 800 was simple but it was a little surprising to see it didnt  look anything like the one in the instructions or the one that was in in there. It wouldbe easier if like all intructions, it said exactly what to do. Like "line up the pins." If it said, "note there are no pins in a certain corner and that is how you orient  it," it would save some grief.
i guess i should be thrilled it came with instructions. I was not delighted to see it came with an addendum and a tube of goop that is not noted in the full instructions.
It says to put a SMALL (their caps) amount of thermal grease to the bottom of the heat sink and make sure the heat sink is in full contract with the chip.
They seem to be concerned about this but not enough to make it clear. How small is a capitalized small. One drop? Two? Where do you put it? And how do you make sure the sink is touching the chip, especially after putting this stuff between the two surfaces. Does this help or hinder? They warn about overheating and I am concerned too. I'll take it apart if someone has a good idea to on how to double check.
About the HD, well ... the instructions at xlr8 your mac are not made for idiots.
I might need someone who can get past the first thing, which i think was disconnect the ATC power supply. There's latch, it says, press it. Well i pressed and pressed every way i could. i didnt want to break it. i left it at that. my wife is coming back from Paris Monday and the computer is still working, or is it cooking? I'll leave it at that for now.
The chip? Seems faster, not twice as fast.  The real time thing i'd like to see in all these tests "is burn a CD." What could be simpler? It tried one and it would not really burn at 24X. i'll try again.
Photoshop seems peppier.
somebody get back to me on that heat sink thing. It's bugging me already.

One other thing. What size are the screws that hold in the second HD. I bought three boxes of assorted ones and none seem close. Should i be looking in an electronics store? I would have paid full price for a consumer model just for these little buggers.
Thanks.

If it's the powersupply connected to te drive itself (a little plastic thing with 4 metal pins and same amount of cables) than it needs some force to pull it off.
I couldn't do it myself when replacing HD on G3 B/W and had to ask for help

I don't know about te processor and heatsink

But, as for the burning speed, this doesn't have anything to do with new processor.
It's the mechanisme of your burner itself that allows to be burned at a certain maximum speed.
So if you have a 400 Mhz with 24x burner, the burner will not burn at 48x just cause you added a 800 Mhz processor
The maximum speed of your burner will be listed on it's box, in the papers that came with it, or the Os shows it to if you (search and) open "Apple System profiler".
Go to the second tab on "Apple System profiler".
I must say, i just checked and it didn't mentioned my top speed, but that migt be cause i have an external one?

The screws are (as far as i know) always included in your new harddrive box.
There should be a little plastic bag in there somewhere, but maybe it's a little hidden in the box... check it clearly
I don't know the size of them though.
BTW, i think that sometimes Apple itself also ships spare screws in the box when you buy a destkop tower model, it's worth checking too (the big keyboard box probably).

hingyfan. Yeah. That Thermal Paste is very important.

How much? Enough to cover it but not too thick.

Don't know how many drops that amounts to.

If it's running, you probably have enough on it.

Had a heck of a time finding the screw size. Have always had some on hand.

Turns out they're probably:

"For the IBM 120GXP 80GB hard drive, there are places for 6 screws, three on each side.  A total of six round-head machine screws, size 6-32, length 1/4 inch are needed.  And, of course, a flathead screwdriver is needed as well.  You can pick up a variety pack of screws that will more than you need at a place like Radio Shack."

M_B is correct about the Burner speed.

Which one do you have?

You should notice more speed in things like copying files.

Rebuild your Desktop and see how much quicker that is.

i have a brand new 52x Lacie burner. I am sure it is restricted by the processor speed. If you used a 52x with a performa, you wouldnt get very far.
It's been noted, that on this machine at least, OSX slows burning speed while it seems to speed up everything else.
What happens is the higher speeds are available as choices but they dont go that fast, the seconds on its timer just hang. It's better to pick a speed where the seconds tick off correctly, of close to it. for me with this that's been 16x.

Thanks for the tip on radio shack. I was trying to stay out of there because the one near me is tiny and staffed by ijits. Maybe i'll drive to the next county.
The latch i couldnt open was on the ATX power supply connector. i didnt come close to removing the drive. The ATX one  is next to the IDE cable. The instructions said it had to removed yet it does not seem connected to the drive.
Good to know it gets worse from there!
im calling a pro. There's a local MUG guy who charges $100 a visit. Ive already spent that on wood screws.

I use a 6"pair of Vice Grips to pull off Power Connectors some times.

I wouldn't pay someone a $100 to do that.

uh, what springs the latch? This is only the first step, but if brute force is all it needs, that i have.

hingyfan. Not sure what you mean.

xlr8 is still offline. Hard to find out what they said.

You need to pull the Hard Drive Power Cable. Here it's listed as P3.

Grab it with a Vice Grips or pliers or something.

Are you asking about the Main Power connector?

Don't know why you'd need to remove that.

Apples B&W G3 Hard Drive info.

Kelly's right on the screw size. Radio Shack or any good hardware store will have them. All the drives I've bought have come with them in a little plastic bag.

Don't crush the power connector with the Vise grips! I use a pair of needel nosed pliers or needled nose vise grips. Just don't rock it back and fourth. Try and pull it staight out if you can.

I just thought I'd add that my book says the screws that hold the bottom HHD to the unit(on the bottom of the drive) are smaller than the ones that screw into the side on the carrier on the second HHD.

Im still at work but i would swear it said to take out the bigger power cable, to the left.
It described the latch and showed it in detail, not enough though for me to figue it out.

Calm down Relax. Use Needlle Nose pliers and wiggle the connector out. Take you time. Plastic always gets sticky due to heat. As for the Thermal Grease or Heatsink putty. Just add a little about the size of a Ball point pen. Once the Heatsink is held down the Thermal Grease will spread on it's own with the heat of the working Processor. I myself use two dabs  LOL

For those Power cables. You usually squeeze and pull.

But I still see no need to take it out. Do you?

Don't get hung up on that.

Just disconnect the stuff to the Hard Drive.

After this you'll be putting in Hard Drives on other people's machines.

That plastic is pretty tough Gary.

I didn't say to put it in a Vice.

Just snug up some Vice Grips.

Kelly,

That plastic is very tough. I didn't mean to.......you know.

Like Bernie said, they get sticky. The longer they are on the stickier they get.

Use Vise grips or whatever you have.

i didnt see a need to take it out either, but i thought perhaps whoever wrote the directions knew more than me.
This is coming froma guy who failed for a second time this week to correctly tape "Napoleon" on A&E for my wife. I had to buy the DVD.
