Title: OS 10.3 news
Post by: Bruce_F on May 03, 2003, 03:40:00 PM
I just phoned the Apple Store about a new purchase for my son. I am trying to make up mind between the newer G4 which doesn't boot into Classic or another model that does.

The fellow I spoke to told me something that I think is very important about the next version of OS X. He said that unless you partion the drive, OS 10.3 will not allow you to boot into Classic!

I can see it now. People are going to upgrade and they'll be screaming about the loss of Classic.

Well, I guess it's time to learn how to make a partition and get things in order. OS 10.3 is just around the corner!

(I heard June)

Didn't even know you could boot into classic. Thought you could just 'start' classic if it's on the same drive/partition?

Learn something new every day.

I'm not sure I understand....?

You mean "Panther" will not ship with "classic", but if you have OS 9.x.x you can install it on a separate partition and use it as "classic" in Panther?

..or when you upgrade, Panther will destroy 'classic' unless OS 9 is installed on a separate partition which is used as 'classic'...

That's the way I understood what the guy said.

If that's the case:

1/ you need a machine that can boot OS 9

2/ Panther does not ship with 'classic'

3/ Panther ships with 'classic' which is not bootable on machines which can boot os 9.

It'll be interesting...

All Macs released after this January won't boot OS 9. The new software won't either.
It wouldn't come as a surprise to me if Bruce's info is correct.
It's where Apple is heading.

But classic will still be available in OS X 10.3. No doubt.

I am curious about the hardware requirements of 10.3, though.
And whether it'll have 64-bit support when Apple announces it and/or if Apple is going release its new PowerMacs parallely.

[Edit] Panther IS going to be introduced at WWDC in late June. Apple already announced that.

I read somewhere that Panther will support 64-bit as the first (consumers) operating system.

I would love to hear the minimum specs to yes, cause i'm just waiting for it to reinstall my computer and get rid of the partition.
If the minimum specs are to high for this one, than i won't bother to buy Panther but that also means i can reinstall my system tomorrow (no need to wait longer than).
