Tech / Re: Mojave and earlier: farewell Firefox
« on: September 12, 2023, 05:34:52 PM »
Thanks Paddy...  :) My MBP automatically presented me with the "update" to 115.1 ESR on August 1st. and installed perfectly. I spent a little time hanging around the Mozilla support forums and was never able to figure out why exactly I was presented with the update that disappeared early... it did so again actually just before August 1. I was able to find out that it happened to more people than just me, and I found out that it was not "supposed" to come out until the release version of FF 116 on or around August 1st. It updated to 115.2 ESR about September 1st and just got an update to 115.2.1 ESR today due to a critical security fix so it's working well!

Firefox 115 released

Parent article: Firefox 115 released

The first two releases of a new ESR are for sysadmin testing. So 115.0 is released now, but you have to manually download and install it. Same for 115.1. Users on the ESR channel will be automatically upgraded from 102.x when 115.2 is released.

But it doesn't tell you where to get 115.1. The story was that people running Sierra through Mojave would be updated via an application update but as I mentioned that "update" through Firefox disappeared after a few days on mine. Nowhere is mentioned to download it manually.

Yes... I know... but my Firefox on High Sierra was offering me ESR 115.1 so as to extend security for about a year. I was away for a few days and thought I'd do the update to that when I got home. Now unfortunately it isn't offering it anymore and says my Firefox is up to date at 115.0.2 so where can one find ESR 115.1 or whatever version is correct now?  :sos:

So... I HAVE found ESR 115.0.3.
It doesn't specify if that would the correct one... it was just this last weekend that Firefox was asking to "update to ESR 115.1" the normal way but that's not there anymore after just a few days so???

OK... Thanks so much for the advice, Paddy... I think I may have depended on iTunes too much in the past. I'll do the upgrade via the iPad.

In fact thanks to all of you here for your patience with me! :)

Thanks for the suggestion, Jim and I have looked all over the site for info. I've definitely found out that my iPad Air 2 complies for iPadOS 15.1 AND so does the iPad Mini 4, however nowhere can I find why the iTunes on my MBP might be trying to download the .ipsw file for iPad Mini 4 for my iPad Air 2. So far as I can tell I have the latest iTunes... v12.8.3 and upon hooking my iPad up to my MBP and opening iTunes it does state that it is an iPad Air 2.

So the upshot of it is that I still don't know if the upgrade that gets downloaded when it tells me there is indeed an upgrade for my iPad Air 2 and I select "download only" is the right file for MY iPad. I haven't found an explanation for the contradictory info in System Information.

It certainly is not referring to the iPhone I have as it is quite old... it's a 4S model and I haven't even hooked it up to my Mac but once to make a backup which I'll probably delete as I really don't need it.

Tech / iPad Software Confusion...
« on: December 02, 2021, 09:43:41 PM »
I thought I would upgrade my iPad to iPadOS 15.1 from iOS 11.4.1 via iTunes rather than the upgrade that shows on the iPad as that's how I've always done it, but I'm confused about the version of software iTunes downloaded for my iPad when I chose the Download Only option rather than doing the whole Down and Install in one step.
According to what I see in my System Info it downloaded iOS 15.1 for iPad Mini 4 (Model A1550) as shown in the screenshot I'll attach here. The download is 5.15GB

My iPad is an iPad Air 2 (Model A1567) according to the info on the back of the iPad. I have upgraded my iTunes to the latest version that I know of for High Sierra... v12.8.3.

The upgrade I am offered in the Settings on my iPad is iPadOS 15.1 at a size of 4GB.

Would I be better to go with what is offered on the iPad than what got downloaded in iTunes? I always thought iTunes would be "smart" enough to download the right software and it does state my device is an iPad Air 2 but I'm not sure the update through iTunes is the right one?

The file as viewed on my computer is:
~/Library/iTunes/iPad Software Updates/iPad_64bit_TouchID_15.1_19B74_Restore.ipsw

Have not figured this one out yet however I haven't had any "font" troubles in documents, pdf's, texts, notes etc. Either in existing ones or ones that I write new or edit etc. so...  :dntknw:

Many thanks, Jim... I do believe you may have saved my sanity!  :notworthy:
I did do more research... a lot more! It still left me a little skeptical however when I took a suggestion I found to look at About this Mac>Storage>X-Drive, chose "manage">Reduce Clutter and went through everything I managed to dump about 25GB of just "stuff" I either really didn't need anymore or duplicates etc. So my HD went from having approx. 118GB on it with just over 1GB purgeable space to approx. 98GB on it with approx. 793MB purgeable space and that's with about 760MB of stuff sitting in the Trash for just long enough for me to decide if anything really is needed which I rather doubt after a couple of days of no complaints. Once I settle that it should be even better!

Also figured out after much experimenting that the openvpn.logs and sockets.logs showing up in the root of my HD were being put there by OnyX after running Maintenance and can apparently be deleted from what my research tells me. One is apparently generated by an app I don't even have anymore but a search in EasyFind turned up just one related file left in ~Library/Application Support and the other beats me as I have no VPN. I have Malwarebytes but doubt it's that as it's not a VPN and there have been no complaints about the logs in the Trash.

So far as the "system log" in Console... what it's complaining about is all working fine... so I think it's time to hit "ignore." The only issue I still have is being disconnected from my network upon a computer restart. Research says it happens not only in High Sierra but in El Capitan and Sierra too... in all the years I ran El Capitan it happened only very, very rarely. So if I restart I just have to select my network from the menubar WiFi icon and it connects now. Some people have it happen even after waking up from sleep, luckily I've not had that happen so far... it's always connected after sleep!

Thanks for the suggestions, Paddy! :)

The main, number one thing is the need for more USB ports really, however at least one charging port would be very handy as well. I'm always swapping around for the iPad, iPhone and I'm thinking of a new iPad soon as this one is getting quite old and I would love an iPad Pro. I currently have an iPad Air 2 and an iPhone 4S but my sister who generously gave me that one last time she upgraded has now upgraded to the iPhone 13 so I'll be inheriting her current iPhone 6S. Only caveat is that she wants the 4S back just to "have" as it was her first iPhone and after being with me for some years now it is still in pristine condition, she looked at it and asked if she could have it back if she gave me her 6S... well, works for me!  I plan to keep my iPad Air 2 even if I get a new iPad and then there is the external DVD player that also needs a USB port and the printer that needs a USB port along with a couple of iPad styluses that charge via USB and the Time Machine drive... another USB port

I'll have to look at all the options closer before coming to a decision but I noted that on the Anker hub in the questions one person asks if it will charge an iPad Pro and someone answers that it won't change her iPad Air. Another person seems to have no problem with Samsung or Galaxy. There is a difference between an iPad Air and an iPad Air 2 but I would think that charging an iPad shouldn't be a problem? :no2: It does have the advantage of being a nice compact unit although one reviewer complains about the size of the power adapter (first reviewer) but it is impossible to please everyone. What I do like about Amazon is the ability to easily return something if it isn't right.

*edit** I should mention that in defence of Jon's recommendation for the Tripplite... when he first posted that it was approx. $85... I wasn't quick enough as there was only 1 left and I was waiting on "the" payday so this is the new stock when they said "more coming soon" and it seems someone decided to give it a good hike in price... in fact it was $103 and change a couple of days ago and now it's $105 and change now, so that's quite an increase!

This is apparently the "space" left on "X-Drive" - Available: 378.02 GB (869.4 MB purgeable)

Disk Utility reports there is 377.15GB free. The "purgeable" space grows by a bit every day so eventually do I end up with no disk space left? And who is deciding for me what I should move off my disk by reserving space for what I don't want to move off my disk?

I bought a computer with more disk space than I need so as not to have to worry about running out of disk space! Does that make any sense? I am more than just a little confused!

Kinda starting to wonder if the upgrade to High Sierra was a good thing or??? Unless this sort of thing is normal?

This is a screenshot of my internal drive (called X-Drive)... the openvpn.logs and sockets.logs keep showing up and I have no idea what they are. They aren't big files... 4kb and under, "get info" tells me they are dated Today, Nov 20/2021 and Sept 1/2018 for the openvpn.logs and Today, Nov20/2021 and Oct. 8/2016 for the sockets.logs.

What ARE these? Trying to figure out why these are all showing up here, at this rate I'll have who knows how many before long... I've never seen ANY of these here before, not even the 2 oldest.
I've looked at Console while trying to figure these out, and there my "system.log" looks like one repeating error after another.

Also a shutdown and/or restart of the computer gets me disconnected from my network so that upon restart I have to click the network item in the menubar and re-connect with my network.

OK... thank you so much for the quick reply! They aren't available today so I'll have try on Monday. In the meantime may I ask what do you mean by USB (universal serial bus)? How would I know if the 2 USB ports I have qualify?

According to what I could find online for a short answer is that USB is:
Quote
Short for universal serial bus, USB (pronounced yoo-es-bee) is a plug and play interface that allows a computer to communicate with peripheral and other devices. USB-connected devices cover a broad range; anything from keyboards and mice, to music players and flash drives.

OK... better yet these are the specs for my MBP: (the 2.6GHz one)

I was just waiting for payday to order the USB hub you recommended but it appears they now have new stock which says it's for Mojave so don't know if it will work for High Sierra:

https://www.amazon.ca/Portable-SuperSpeed-Splitter-Aluminum-Transfer/dp/B00D600M68/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Tripp-Lite%2BU360-007%2BUSB%2Bhub&qid=1637263243&sr=8-1&th=1

Any suggestions for perhaps another model if this one won't work for me?  :sos:

There's this one with 4 ports... it would do although the charging port would be nice.

Bunches of thanks in advance!

Any ideas of what you might do? Leave the whole thing alone? Remove the Rapportd app as prompted by the "uninstall" in the Safari extensions and take out as much as possible that way? Definitely DO NOT enable the Safari extension... just leave them unchecked?

:dntknw: I'm open to any ideas!

I have found... uuhhmm "helpful" (NOT) sites like this: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/trusteer-rapport/1955?topic=rapport-uninstalling-mac-os

You follow the link that's supposed to bring you to the original .dmg file which is "supposed" to contain the uninstaller only to  :wallbash: right into another brick wall!
