Your trial .mac account will expire in 60 days.  You will then have to rely upon AIM for instant messneging.  However, if you use your AIM account with iChat AV (free of charge) you can take advantage of the video conferencing feature.  Register a free AIM account at http://my.screenname.aol.com/_cqr/login/lo...ized&createSn=1 (that should work, if not, try http://www.aim.com/index.adp) choose not to download it.  Open iChat AV and open preferences.  Go to the "Accounts" tab.  Select "use AIM account".  Use the account name and password that you registered at the AIM site.  

I hope this is of help, I have been using iChat with an AIM account since Jaguar came out.  my account name is joe9173 (not a .mac account).

All too true.  My (1st generation) ipod still works fine when plugged into the wall though.  No longer covered by warranty.

At first I read your post and thought that can't be.  When I took the drive out of the g4 tower it's only jumper was set to "slave".  In order to put it in the firewire encasing it had to be set to "master".  So naturally, I switched it to master, put it in the firewire encasing, connected it to my iBook, and it worked perfectly - 80gb.  I'm guessing it was the first time I reformatted it that it appeared as 31.5 gb.  I just changed the jumper to "cable select" and reconnected it.  It appeared as 31.5 gb again.  I reformatted, and it's 80gb.  So apparently it was the jumper - but it didn't take effect until after a reformat.  So now I'm all set.  Very interesting.  Thanks for your help.

It's on my iBook g4.  It'a a maxtor 80gb 7200 rpm hard drive inside a "pryo 1394 drive kit" (external firewire encasing).  The drive used to be in a 350mhz g4 tower until i put it in the firewire encasing this week.  It worked fine inside the encasing until i reformatted it a few times.

I don't have anything important (or anything at all for that matter) on the hard drive right now, so I'll do whatver is necessary to fix it.  But I've already tried reformatting...

In Disk Utility is says the drive itself is 31.5gb as well as the only partition inside it.  It's connected via firewire, if that makes a difference to anything.

Recently i have been reformatting / repartitioning/ installing system software on my 80 gb maxtor 7200 rpm hard drive which in the past has worked fine.  Just a couple of minutes ago I noticed that it is showing up as a 31.5 gb hard drive.  Where did the other 50 gb go?  Is it time for a new hard drive?

2003 / Is an iBook too hot, and too slow?

I purchased an iBook g4 a  few weeks ago, so far no problems at all.  Some older games run slow when I have an external monitor connected and monitor spanning enabled (which requires modifying the system because you're not supposed to do that on the new ibooks) but strangely enough the newer more graphic intensive games which i have downloaded the demos for have no speed decrease at all when monitor spanning is enabled, very peculiar.  Generally speaking, however, I only use the computer for internet, word processing, and music.  It works great.  As for heat, it gets a little warm but nothing I can't bear, although I have yet to wear shorts while using the laptop (as it is very cold outside during the winter), but i can see that being a minor problem.  I primarily use the laptop on a desk with an external mouse and keyboard, so I haven't really had to deal with the temperature too much, but when i have used it on my lap it wasn't a problem.  Originally i was looking at the 12" ibook as well but then i saw how small it actually was and decided it was worth it to buy teh 14" instead, which i currently have.  

iBook g4 933 mhz
256mb Ram (soon to be upgraded to 640 mb)
Combo drive (very nice)
Internal bluetooth module (in use with wireless keyboard and mouse)

If you ask me, I would say definitely go for the iBook g4, and I would recommend going with the 14" screen if at all possible.  I would suggest taking a look at them at a local store of some sort.  Good luck!

Cool.  I don't believe the firewire 800 issue would  apply to me, i'm currently using a g4 350 mhz (only firewire is 400) and i'm considering the purchase of an ibook g4 which you may have read in my other posts, which i believe only has firewire 400.  Thanks for your input, i'll check this stuff out.

2003 / Firewire Hard Drive case

A few months ago I read an ad in MacWorld about some sort of external firewire device that was essentially an external firewire hard drive, without the hard drive. and you could pop your own 3.5" hard drive in it, plug it into the computer and use it as an external firewire hard drive.  I believe they were selling for about 30$.  Does anyone know what these are called, where i can find them, or anything else about them?  thanks

As for the movie editing, i'm currently doing OK on a 350mhz g4, so i'm sure the iBook would atleast be a small step up.  Any movie editing i do would be very minor.  And for the hard-disk space, i currently have 3 hard drives in the g4 tower and was planning on pulling one of them out (80 gb) and hooking it up to an external firewire case of some sort and then connecting it to whatever I end up getting.

Thanks for the input.  I don't plan on doing much gaming at all, mostly just surfing the internet, some small programming, word processing, and a little bit of movie editing.  Oh and of course I would use it for music too.  Portability and a low price tag are important.  So I'm thinking this would be a good choice.
