I don't know a thing about Apple Servers but it's a great picture.  smile.gif

By the way the lights are flashing it looks like a lot of activity.

Are the verticle things, with numbers on the bottom, with the lights HDDs?

Not a lot of activity, most of the lights are just status lights.  i.e. power OK, Temperature OK, etc. etc.

Yes, each numbered box on the lower unit is a hard drive enclosure.  In this case, each contains a 180 GB Hard drive.  The green lights indicate if the hard drive is functional, and the blue light indicates if the hard drive is part of a volume.  In this case, the seven on the left are, and the seven on the right aren't.  You may also notice that drive number 6's status light is not lit.  Actually it is cycling from amber to green and back again as we pulled that drive to check it's 'hot-swap' function and it's currently being re-integrated into the volume.

Just curious, with servers, does one still need/use utilities such as DW and TTPro? In general, how are the maintenance routines different from those of a DT or PB?

Hehe, what you CAN'T see are all the Dell PCs around the place.  An unfortunate reality is that I spend 90% of my time doing Win/Linux support and only touch the Apples infrequently.

Well, my work environment is not what I would call 'typical'.  Our servers get turned over quite frequently so tools like you mentioned are handy rather than critical.  Quite different from my last place of employment where Norton Utilities saved my bacon about three times a week.  My server support concerns aren't really all that different from the average end user, I just have different priorities with about two dozen people and a hundred CPU's to support.  Data backup and security take up about 75% of my time, either implementing, supporting, or researching one way or another.   I have to verify that our data backup procedure works, which includes doing a test restore now and then (which reminds me I'm about due for another one).  My primary concern with the RAID box is security, it's going to have to be locked down seven ways to sunday and it's not proving to be an easy task presently.  Of course, it isn't helping that I don't have any documentation either <grumble grumble>, but I'm still having fun poking around.  After that are your typical printing/surfing/ keyboard/mouse issues and whatnot which gives me a chance to talk to my end users and gets my head out of the inside of one computer or another.

Like the header said, some days I hate it (when the 0's and 1's aren't co-operating), and other days I love it.

But, that is life.

I thought you might like to have a look at the Apple server side of things.  Just as pretty as the desktops.  No guarantees we're going to buy it, but we have a week to test it all to heck!

Mamamoose;

Since you specified that the laptop will not boot at all, I might begin to suspect the power adapter before the battery.  Do you have access to a known good one to test?  If the battery were dead and the adapter good, you should be able to remove the battery and still boot the machine.

2003 / What have I done to my iMac?

Helen;

If I'm not mistaken, there is a firmware update SPECIFICALLY for the CD drive on the original iMac, try installing that.  I did a quick search on the Apple support page and found this article;

The update can be downloaded here

Good luck.

As for judging someone’s personality by the written opinion of others, I do my best to refrain, especially if I don’t know the writer, and or he doesn’t have to answer for his words. It’s a whole lot easier to write about someone then it is to look them in the eye and say what you will, I often wish that was the test!

All too true, I guess I let the pessimistic side of me get the upper hand on that post.

As for the iPod, we'll see.  I don't have any plans on getting one, or even a remotely similar product, but I wish Apple all the best.

Sandbox;

I don't think the saviour of Apple is the iPod, in my opinion it was the iMac.  What the iPod may do for Apple is allow them to increase their market share a bit.  Speaking for myself, if half of what I've read about Steve Jobs is true the man is a first class jerk of a human being.  BUT (and this is a big but)......he's the right CEO at the helm for Apple, if they want to continue being successful.  He certainly seems to have the right vision for where Apple needs to go, and the guts to try new things.  How may 'i' items from other companies have shown up on the market since the iMac?

George;

Not to be a jerk or anything, but are you sure the machine came with PC133 memory?  I was under the impression the first macs to use it were the Graphite G4's.

If it helps any mareska, it turns out the screwdriver is the best way to get that little cover off.  Trying to force it will only lead to it snapping one side or the other off.

An elderly gentleman at the retirement home decided he was going to have a bit of fun. Acting quickly, he made up a sign that read;

Sex for sale
$20 in the bed
$10 on the couch
$5 on the floor

After hanging the sign on his door, he stepped back inside to get cleaned up.  A few hours later there is a knock on the door.  Opening it reveals an elderly woman waving a 20 dollar bill in the air.
"Well my dear"  Says the gentleman "Step inside and I'll go get the bed ready"
"Bed HELL!" Cries the woman "I want it four times on the floor!"

My Mother told me this one
