I came across an article on arstechnica last week with a bunch of comments, one of which really ticked me.  I had to respond.

Nothing anti-social about it. I volunteer my time at hospice. I watch people die all too often. Perhaps it makes me a bit jaded, but I just can't get up tears and cries for sainthood for folks who get so many words of wonder dedicated to them because they made shiny things other people liked to buy....

My reply:

I watched my mother die recently. Near the end, one of the few things that put a smile on her face was looking at pictures and video of her family on the iPad I brought to the hospital. For months earlier she had enjoyed playing games, solving puzzles and marveling at the information that was literally at her crippled fingertips. She actually called it her "Happy Pad".

Yes, that shiny thing made a real difference for an 89 year old woman. Thank you Steve.

That is so awesome Kris!  So awesome.... But, sorry to hear about your mom....  We just celebrated my mother's 1 year last month.... Really miss that lady.... Again, love your story.....  biggrin.gif

Alohe 'oe Mr. Jobs, mahalos for all you've done for me and just about everyone in the world.  You are a true icon in society and will be greatly missed.

I am so thankful for the opportunity to be a small part of your large project and that I have met some wonderful people in the process, all right here on TS.

Mahalo Nui Loa Steve Jobs,

Tech / Need a Router
« on: January 26, 2011, 02:23:04 AM »
The last Dlink router I had had an overheating issue and disconnection failures.  It was a common occurrence with that model (don't ask which, I forget already).

My neighbor had signal strength problems with his Dlink and I switched him off to a Netgear router and he has had no issues.

Linksys, not so Mac friendly, but, they'll work.... I had one in the days of no wireless yet...

I have had two Buffalo routers as my last two, liked them both and only upgraded to take advantage of Wireless N technology.

Both the Netgear and Buffalo routers have great signal strength and imo are very reliable.

If you happen to find that your unhappy with your Linksys, possibly return it and look into a Netgear or Buffalo router, jmho.  But, my hopes is that you find it functional and works to your needs.  smile.gif

Tech / Heuristic Trojan Alert!
« on: October 04, 2010, 02:56:17 PM »
Just an FYI for you all.

I received today in my spam box of my Yahoo mail a nondelivery notice from the USPS (spoof ofcourse) with 2 attachments.

As I found it very suspicious, I scanned it with ClamXAV and it detected that it was in fact a trojan virus!  The payload (USPSlabel.zip) is a zip file with an executable file inside.  (LABEL_USPSXLS.exe)

This is my very first virus of this fashion through my email.  SPOOKY!

Just wanted to post this to warn you good people of this.

The main difference is that you cannot customize a refurb when you order it - what you see is what you get, although there have been cases of people getting MORE than what was advertised (ie: more RAM etc.) - it would appear that Apple doesn't necessarily downgrade the returned machines to their original base model state. However, I think that is the exception rather than the rule.

Haha, Paddy.  I have experienced this first hand.

I just received my new referbed iMac last week which was supposed to have a 1 TB hard drive and to my amazement it came with the 2 TB drive!  Tack on another $180 savings from the Apple web site.  Helped when explaining the bill for this behemoth to the little lady.

Also recently purchased 2 MacBooks referbed, works fine so far and am real happy with them all.

Hi Y'all.

Thanks for thinking of me!  wub.gif

All is good here, praise God.

At the most we had serious tidal shifts of about 3 feet.  3 feet up and 3 feet down, so, yeah, about a 6 foot shift.

Richard, it was real tense here for a while, so, I don't have any live photos.  Stayed my butt put and didn't go out chasing high waters, LOL!

This bridge that this guy is taking these photos is where my daughter and I frequently go fishing, it is less than a half mile from where I live.  Water goes in and out with the tide, but, NEVER LIKE THIS!   WOW.gif eek2.gif

2009 / Can't completely empty trash
« on: September 10, 2009, 06:32:53 PM »
It's probably not flushing because for some reason the new system is using something from the old system folder and trash should be stating that.  That cocktail suggestion sounds good.

2009 / iPhone 3.1 firmware released today
« on: September 10, 2009, 02:01:43 AM »
New firmware was released today for the iPhone, ver. 3.1.

Just a heads up that some people have been having problems after the upgrade and the fix was to upgrade and then set up your iPhone as new and not to restore from a back up.

Anyone wanna try it?  I already downloaded the ipsw file, but, am gonna wait a while.  Til the smoke clears....wink.gif

2009 / Camera for iChat
« on: September 10, 2009, 01:43:27 AM »
You know, I got really lucky a couple of weeks ago.

My daughter was bothering me for a web cam so she could video chat with her friend when she moves away soon.

I tried to get her eyetoy cam to work, no luck with ichat.  I researched a few usb2 cams, but, it was a real hit or miss situation with drivers and proper function.

Well, I was searching around craigslist and came across an iSight that the guy only wanted $29 for it.... Uh, wow!  I immediately called him and we made the transaction.  The iSight works perfectly!  smile.gif  Too bad all transactions couldn't be like this one.  But, the iSight really is the perfect web cam for a mac.
