2004 / Suspicious e-mails
« on: January 30, 2004, 07:28:32 AM »
I had around 40 mails in my box this morning that I wouldn't normally expect to find there. They were all from seemingly legitimate e-mail addresses (none of which I had ever heard of before), all had attachments (either body.zip, test.zip or document.zip), and all contained the following text in the message;

'This message cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII encoding and has been sent as a binary attachment'

Does this sound like it might be the work of Mydoom? I obviously won't open any attachments, but should I send e-mails to the addresses concerned to warn them that they may be unsuspectingly sending out a virus?

Thanks

Paul

2004 / 'Passphrase' problem in Panther
« on: January 28, 2004, 05:59:38 AM »
One of my colleagues has just upgraded his iMac to run Panther and is having a problem relating to passphrases.

He has downloaded Safari from the Apple website and when trying to install it is asked for a 'passphrase'. He has no knowledge of having input a passphrase at any stage. He's tried running from the startup disc but on restart is asked for the passphrase each time.

Can anyone help?

2003 / Printers

Funnily enough, I opened your post to say 'Don't touch Lexmark' as I thought you were looking to buy, but it seems you've already bought.

Anyway - don't touch Lexmark. We bought a Lexmark laser printer a couple of years ago and it has proved to be a complete load of junk. It's poorly made, constantly misfeeds, the print quality is average and the software is poor.

Sorry  wink.gif

2003 / Copy protected CDs...
« on: September 25, 2003, 04:20:57 AM »
I've had the most pathetic automated response from Amazon along the lines of 'we can't show all information on a CD in our catalogue' and 'sometimes suppliers don't issue us with all information'. With the e-mail comes a couple of links - has this mail answered your question or not? I clicked not and told them they'd completely missed the point and that displaying copy protection details is essential - after all, if the CD screws my drive up, who's paying? Not Amazon for sure.

Anyway, I have had a second response - appeared to be from a human being this time, but the e-mail said much the same as the first mail and basically what it comes down to is that they may or may not display 'copy protected' against a CD, but if you buy a CD and have problems with it, they might be prepared to 'look at it'.

Wonderful.

Thanks for all your comments.

I have posted a message on the band's message board telling them what I think of the record company and also that the fact that the CD is corrupt is not mentioned anywhere on the site.

I have also mailed Amazon who do not even mention it on their site - and they're selling the thing!

And I'm about to write to the record company asking for an assurance that the CD will not damage my computer/car player/portable player if I buy it. What do you think the chances of a response are?  police.gif I'll let you know.

Thanks again

2003 / Copy protected CDs...

I once swore that I would never buy any audio CD that was copy protected. I have always burnt a copy of my CDs to keep in my car, so, if the car gets stolen, at least I still have the original CDs. This is not to mention scratches, very hot days in the car, split drinks etc. etc. I have never burnt a copy and given it to someone else.

Now guess what. One of my favourite bands have just released their new album and it's copy protected. Now I either buy it and don't listen in the car or run the risk of it getting stolen/damaged or I don't buy it. But I want it.

Is there a way around the copy protection? I believe I've heard people say that there is, but I don't know where to turn. If you don't want to divulge any secrets here then I understand, but I'd be grateful for any help.

I really want the album but I'm not laying down to the record company.  mad.gif

Thanks

Hold everything! Having quit Photoshop, Quark, Illustrator etc. etc. it's now down to 2.5 seconds. Having seen the other times posted, I was about to start a new topic 'Why is my Mac so slooowwwww'? Now I know why.  biggrin.gif

Hi dakota

I searched Tucows but couldn't find anything relating to PuzzlePalace - but from what you're saying, it sounds like it may be for OSX only?

Under system 9.2, I'd like to be able to password protect certain folders so that only I have access to them (and it's not what you're thinking - mainly financial stuff!  wink.gif ).

Can anyone recommend an application to do this? It's the sort of thing I'd have thought would be available as free/shareware (in fact, it's the sort of thing Apple should have included as part of the system software, but that's another story), but I haven't been able to find anything.

Thanks for any help.
