2009 / Back again with my wayward G4 AGP
« on: October 30, 2009, 02:28:14 PM »
Many Thanks for the updated recommendations.

My mind/brain/memory is in now seriously confused, having already been seriously corrupted many years ago -
(What were their names? - I forget, but life was FUN!.)

I'm scratching my head to find a suitable USB scalp-port so that I can de-frag/optimise/re-build my Personal OS and find the missing loose screws.

Thankfully, it's been running OK for 65(ish) years and hasn't yet crashe  \'*/≈€• ...........    Doh!!!!.

Large old star

Errr Who/where am I?

Very many thanks for all the advice, most of which certainly seems to point to the 8GB drive as the major source of the problems.
Before this response to you I elected to follow Tacit's advice first and foremost; it being a straightforward 3 Stage process which even I could negotiate. So, I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner and re-formatted the 128 GB drive to a single partition.

QUOTE(tacit @ Oct 29 2009, 01:38 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
1. Re-format your second hard disk as one single partition, not two 64 GB partitions.

2. Download the free program Carbon Copy Cloner and run it to clone your current system onto your second hard drive.

3. Remove the 8 GB hard drive from your computer and throw it away. Seriously, these days an 8 GB hard drive simply isn't worth keeping, unless you want it as a paperweight or a Christmas ornament or something.

To correct the typo error in my symptoms-thread, the second drive is 128 GB (not MB!).

However, this drive must now be referred to in the past tense as I suspect CCC couldn't make any sense of the corruption/s lurking within the 8 GB drive and displayed a "You must re-start your computer" message after cloning 1.5 GB.

The G4 re-started OK but did not mount the 128 MB drive.

Disk Utility said it couldn't repair the drive, DW ground to a stop "due to disk errors" (sic) and Tech Tool wouldn't even start running "due to lack of useable space on the active hard drive" (sic).

Once I've got another secondary drive I'll create a full schedule based on all contributions and install things bit by bit - probably with a view to laboriously copying individual files to the new system etc.

I'll report back ASAP. But, PLEASE, don't hold your breath !!!!!

MANY THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE

Regards

David L.

2009 / Back again with my wayward G4 AGP
« on: October 28, 2009, 07:12:56 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I'm back after an involuntary, but necessary, time away from home and access to my wayward G4 AGP.
However, nice though it is to be home again, I've returned to the same faults with the G4 about which I posted some months ago and, being unable to find that thread, I must now burden you with the symptoms again. However, this time I have some additional goodies lurking in the sidelines which may help.

Quite suddenly, earlier this year, my machine began to refuse to shut-down when I select the "Shut Down" option from the finder's Apple Menu. I am given a two minute option to Shut Down or Cancel but, when I select Shut Down, all that happens is that the finder, all desktop icons and the cursor disappear - leaving me with my desktop pattern. To actually turn the machine OFF, I must depress the Power I/O button for 5 seconds

The "Restart" option doesn't work either but the "Sleep" option does and this is what I am predominantly using - it clears the screens completely and puts the monitors on stand by.

Furthermore, since returning home a few days ago, after the very few occasions that I used the I/O button to shut down, at Power On, I am now being asked for my Password to login. This is a totally new glitch to me - despite the other faults, I've never had to login before.

It's a G4 AGP @ 400MHz with 1 GB RAM running OS 10.4.11. on an 8 GB drive which is almost full - only 300 MB available

I've installed an additional 128 MB Drive partitioned into 2 x 64 MB - both currently empty at 63.83 MB available.

Waiting in the aforementioned sidelines and currently uninstalled are:
1.    NewerTech MaxPro 1.6 GHz Processor Upgrade
2.    2 x 512 MB SDRAMs
3.    OSX Leopard 10.5.6
4.    Seagate 500 GB SATA Drive
5.    Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA PCI Adapter Card

Disc Utility, and TechTool Pro both show the 8 GB drive as being OK whilst DW says the drive is too severely damaged to continue.

If I try to re-install 10.4.11 the G4 reports an error on the install disc - hence the purchase of OSX 10.5.6 and the 1.6 GHz processor to support it.

Any suggestions as to what may be wrong and how to correct it?

My thoughts are with vague memories of replies to my previous thread which expressed shock and horror at my current hard drive being over-burdened. So, I apologise if I'm prompting repeated efforts on your part to guide me through this.

BTW - My planned purchase of a new Mac has been shelved pending a move to a New House in the New Year.

Regards to all and it's good to be reading the TS pages again.

David, have you checked in the system logs to see if you can tell what's stalling the shutdown?
I'd repair permissions, clean caches etc. and see if that helps. Also run Disk Utility to check the drive for errors. You can also try creating a new account and then checking to see if the problem persists. And starting up from Safe Mode.

PADDY - Many Thanks thanx.gif

From my Install Disk / Disk Utility, I've Run ...

... / Repair Permissions, and ... / Repair Disk - All OK!

NOW, "clean caches" , "create new account" & "Safe Mode" ....

.... errrrrrr, DOH!  doh.gif

Just 3 Questions arise -

WHAT !!!! ??? ;  WHERE !!!! ??? ; HOW  !!!! ??? Thinking.gif

Does it help to advise you (everyone) that, in trying to copy my Start Up Drive (7.87GB with only 211.9MB free) to a 100% clean drive (16.68GB) using SuperDuper, I get a SuperDuper message telling me "Failed to enable ownership on  [Destination Drive] Megan"?

HELP! ..... all I need to do is shut down in a conventional manner, but things are getting out-of-control whilst all I REALLY want to do is copy/back-up my StartUp Drive (to a comfortable alternative) before it chokes to death.

Don't worry - I'll understand ALL your answers. After all, I've only been using Macs since 1988 (oh; how I miss System 7 and OS 9).

Many Ta's

Many thanks for prompt reply Chris. I'll certainly check lowendmac.com later today.

However; the postman should be arriving any moment now with a Sonnet Encore/ST G4 Upgrade Card which should (I am assured by many sources) whack my processor speed up to 1GHz
QUOTE(chriskleeman @ May 5 2009, 04:07 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
.... because with a processor speed of less than 867 Mhz, Leopard won't install unless you use one of the "tricks" you'll read in that link.

That should prove interesting to say the least !!!
I'll let you know how I get on.

Can someone tell me what is the most recent version of OS X that I can run on my G4?

Machine Name:   Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics)
  Machine Model:   PowerMac3,1
  CPU Type:   PowerPC G4  (2.8)
  Number Of CPUs:   1
  CPU Speed:   400 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):   1 MB
  Memory:   768 MB
  Bus Speed:   100 MHz
  Boot ROM Version:   4.2.8f1

The existing 10.4.11 is incompatible with the software for a USB Turntable I bought without checking first and I've a library of vinyls I need to put on my iPod.

G4  - OS X 10.4.11

As the topic description says, my G4 won't complete the shut down process.

Everything disappears from the desktop - menu bar, dock and drive/folder icons.

Other than my selected desktop picture, I'm left with a totally blank desktop.

If I choose re-start, I end up with exactly the same situation.

I have to complete the shut down process by depressing the power button for about five seconds.

Any suggestions for a cure would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Many thanks for your kind wishes.

I hope my 64th year will be less notable than my 63rd - eight months of which were spent in hospital undergoing ten operations and culminating in returning home only to fall on a rather hard concrete floor and shatter my left shoulder joint and upper arm.

With two hospitalisations and one-armed limitation punctuating my time so far this year, I've had to postpone my plan for a Mac Pro - I can barely lift an envelope at the moment, let alone carry and position a new machine and re-arrange all my monitors and peripherals!

I'm also finding it tricky to type one-handed - what with drinking and smoking at the same time.

I've pretty-much sorted out the G4 problem  - there's one niggly little problem over which I've asked for help on the Tech side of TS.

Thanks again and regards to ALL

I've searched Apple.com without success - can't find ANY X System updates. I urgently need 10.4.8 (at least) to run FileMaker Pro 9 that I treated myself to for Christmas.

As title infers, I'm currently stuck at 10.4.11.

Any guidance as to how/where I can find an update will be much appreciated.

Best wishes to all

THANK YOU KRIS!!!! thanx.gif

Sorry I've taken so long to respond to you suggestions.

The GOOD NEWS is that everything is up and running 100%.

The BAD NEWS is that I haven't the vaguest clue as to which of your links gave me the solution to the problem.

I swapped drives in, out and back and forth;
I changed jumper settings here, there and everywhere,
I downloaded and up-graded this, that and t'other;
I cursed, cussed and swore;
I checked firmware, PRAM and CUDA;
I sulked, cried and pleaded;

All the above were in random order over several days until Saturday morning when, in sheer desperation;
I crossed my fingers, pushed the power button and held the option key.

BINGO - IT WORKS!!!!!! bump.gif

And, it's been working just fine ever since. thumbup.gif
I just wish I could remember what I did Friday night****

Thank you notworthy.gif

2008 / OS 10.4 / 9.2.2 Startup Conundrum
« on: April 01, 2008, 12:57:41 AM »
Can anyone explain why my G4 (AGP Graphics 400 MHz) refuses to start up when I have both an OS X (10.4) and an OS 9.2.2 drive installed?

It starts up from each drive when they are installed individually and DiskWarrior verifies both drives are OK.

If I hold the option key during startup with both drives installed I get the arrows of the OS X drive-select screen but without the drive buttons - so I guess there is some basic recognition of an OS X drive presence.

Neither drive shows when I boot from the DW CD.

Also, I've switched between the options of master/slave jumper settings.

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Regards to all

Definately and consistently CLOCKWISE for me - no matter how I squinted or adjusted my point of view.

HOWEVER, when I turned my back to the screen and looked over my shoulder using a MIRROR - the REFLECTION WAS ALSO TURNING CLOCKWISE!

That shouldn't happen. Should it?

Very many thanks Chris but I'd already tried a PRAM Zap without success.

However ......

On some B&W G3 systems, there is a loop of tape around it saying that the warranty will be void if the loop is removed. On other B&W G3s, the jumper block is actually taped down to the logic board with a seal that tells you the warranty is void if the seal is broken.

... Tacit, I've always been tempted to have a look-see to find out what lies beneath the tape seal. Tonight, it seems my curiosity will be satisfied.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Thank you
