LOL...I'm a bit late to this party - just posted the Onyx option in the other thread where you mentioned this. ;)

Tech / Re: Sync Mail across devices
« on: November 07, 2024, 12:43:06 PM »
The forward-to-iCloud would be one solution but perhaps not the most ideal. What I don't understand is why your emails aren't syncing across your devices - Gmail is IMAP only now, so anything you do on one device should sync with the other. I've never had an issue with this (6 Apple devices, all synced) but others apparently have and there are a bunch of things you can try:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254552980?sortBy=rank

This solution from June 2024 looks like an easy one to try first:

Quote
Hey Fretnicker, I began experiencing these issues last week and toggling from 'Push' to 'Manual' for the gmail accounts on my iPhone (settings > mail > accounts > fetch new data) solved my issues instantly.

I hope this works for you too.  Good luck!

Full post:

I use multiple gmail accounts on the Mail app/prog -- on both my iPhone & MacBook.  Typically, I have no issues with syncing changes made in either direction and was being thrown when the changes I made on my iPhone (deleting, opening, moving to folders, etc.) were not syncing with my MacBook.

I opened webmail (mail.google.com, in this case) and found that the changes hadn't been made there either.

While other threads/solutions may be helpful for others (making sure iOS is up to date, phone restarted, fetched new data / synchronized accts on each device, toggled from deleted to archived in advanced settings), I was nearly to the point of deleting & adding the accounts back ... nearly, but didn't want to go through the hassle.

I'm sure glad I found this thread.  Toggling from 'Push' to 'Manual' for the gmail accounts on my iPhone (settings > mail > accounts > fetch new data) worked immediately.  Changes made on the iPhone synced with webmail and the Mail program on the MacBook in under a minute.

Tech / Re: File Name Shows on Custom Desktop Picture

Funny - I never shut any of my Macs down. They just go to sleep. I suspect that the vast majority of folks just do this so Apple decided to simplify the energy preference options. (there are lots of complaints about it being missing in a thread on the Apple forums, which of course, Apple never reads) BUT - Onyx has the scheduling options under its Utilities->Scheduling, which is much easier and friendlier and less likely to cause a disaster than Terminal. Onyx is still a very useful little free app. :)

Re: the terminal - as far as I know, that's not changed any. Same as always. (?) Never could see

I have never had that problem (touch wood) - in fact, I just went and changed the default for Sequoia to a custom pic to see if it would do that, and nope. No text. Phew.

It has been an issue for at least a few others though: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255561698?sortBy=rank and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253963526?sortBy=rank (which has your solution - in reverse)

But what on earth turns it on in the first place, I wonder, if there is no user-accessible system pref to do it?

One interesting note - Apple keeps moving the desktop picture folder. I still haven't found THEIR desktop pic folder for Sequoia - it's not in the same location as for Ventura. (I found the default photo, but not any of the others on offer) In Sequoia, the user's own Desktop pics (after being chosen from wherever you had stored them,) are copied to user/Library/Application Support/com.apple.desktop.photos

I have SO much cruft from multiple updated operating systems over the years, that I found OLD desktop pictures (the system ones - from 2009 through 2017) - not on offer any more in "Wallpaper." That one is in /Library/Desktop Pictures.

BTW - I wouldn't rush to update to Sequoia if I were you. It's the buggiest update I've seen in eons. My M2 Macbook Air is mostly fine - but the 2019 i9 iMac? Not good. Not necessarily Apple issues - one of them involves printing from Adobe Acrobat Pro (it's a documented issue - a "util" file quits in a hissy fit every time) and various other things - mostly system extensions - that just pop up as having "unexpectedly quit". Granted, I normally don't update all that quickly - I did this time because I was going to be helping a friend with a new Mac and decided I'd better have at least some familiarity. I loath "Passwords" - it has caused me to spend hours getting an investment account working again after it just "forgot" the authenticator connection (DO NOT use its authenticator if you value your sanity - use Google Authenticator. Microsoft's authenticator is also a problem child, according to the investment company). I have now at least partially disabled it by turning it off in iCloud, but it still parks its stupid nose in there. I have and love 1Password - there should be an option to disable Apple's Passwords if you don't want it. /rant

Tech / Re: e mails and blocked server
« on: April 28, 2024, 02:55:27 PM »
Well, I visited the "dangerous" page and whatever iWeb site was there before is long gone - someone has removed it and installed their own minimal bit of HTML with a "coming soon" and a countdown timer script (which isn't working) and a Wordpress logo, though WP itself is not installed. The details in the dangerous site warning say that the site was used for phishing - so the home page is not the page that has the phish installed.

So - first off, you need to get access to Cpanel again, change the password for Cpanel and then you do indeed need to wipe the site out. COMPLETELY. No telling where they've buried the bodies - but there could be scripts and redirects and all sorts of nasty stuff on there. Spamhaus thinks there is a bot/malware that is associated with ransomware. Bad stuff.

You don't, btw, need an actual website to have working domain email. You need to have email hosting somewhere, attached to the domain - but you (your wife) may want to investigate other options besides MacHighway for that. You will, however, have to deal with the blacklisting if you want to keep those email addresses.

The site is on Spamhaus' blacklist and as that's one used by many, many ISPs, it's pretty obvious why email just isn't going.

https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=blacklist%3aelliff-legal-med.com&run=toolpage

Here's the info from Spamhaus (go directly to their site and put in the IP address if you want to see it directly. IP address is below)

199.204.248.169 has 1 listing

Please don’t be alarmed! We understand finding your IP address, domain, URL or ASN on a blocklist can be worrying. This website will give you information about why you are listed and what you can do to ensure you don’t get listed again.

Where it is possible to request removal, we will help you through the process. However, if your IP is listed on the Spamhaus Blocklist (SBL), removal can only be requested by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

eXploits Blocklist (XBL) - Why was this IP address listed?
The machine using this IP is infected with malware that is emitting spam or is sharing a connection with an infected device.

As a result, this IP address is listed in the eXploits Blocklist (XBL)

Click on Show Details to see if you can request a delisting from this blocklist. This will also display any further information we have relating to this listing.

Hide details
Why was this IP listed?
A machine using 199.204.248.169 is infected with malware associated with the avalanche/andromeda family.

199.204.248.169 initiated contact with a nymaim command and control server, using contents unique to nymaim C&C command protocols.

Technical details of the nymaim detection
199.204.248.169 initiated a tcp connection from 199.204.248.169 using source port 48164, to the sinkhole IP address 216.218.185.162 on destination port 80.

The most recent detection was on: April 19 2024, 17:40:35 UTC.

Information about the nymaim botnet
The Andromeda/Avalanche botnet was associated with 80 different malware families: Andromeda, Win3/Dofoil, Gamarue, Smoke Loader, W32/Zurgop.BK!tr.dldr, and many others. The Avalanche network also provided the Command & Control communications for these other botnets: TeslaCrypt, Nymaim, Corebot, GetTiny, Matsnu, Rovnix, Urlzone, QakBot, etc. This botnet was taken down in 2016 but malware associated with it remains active.

Additional information on nymaim can be found on Wikipedia.

What should be done about it?
If this is a shared server, please call your hosting company or ISP!

This listing is the result of what we believe to be a security issue. Your machine is still infected, and it is probable that there is more than one type of malware present. To stop ongoing listings and to secure your network, websites, devices and data we recommend both prevention and remediation of the issue.

Prevention
Spamhaus has an FAQ about general security best practices that should be followed.

Remediation
If this is a server, please set up logging to find the source of the problem. Check for compromised websites and follow the directions on our FAQ
If you have a Windows machine; To find and remove the malware please see the Microsoft website and run Microsoft Defender to catch any other related malware that may be present.
Removal from XBL
XBL listings expire automatically some time after the last detection. If necessary, once the security issue is solved, you can request removal.

At this point, if your wife doesn't need the website, the email addresses can be easily changed to something else (I'd suggest a Gmail addy) - yes, there will be some time spent going to the various websites using the domain email address and changing them to something else. Can she GET her email ok?? (Some sites might send confirmation emails to the old email - though most will send it to the new one.)

I HOPE she's using a password manager that will list all these sites and their login details...that will make things 100% easier. Can't recommend the app 1Password enough if you don't have anything in place atm.

I am a little confused by "She has 3 emails and cannot send from any of them.    brenda@elliff-legal-med.com, "server setting cp02 machighway.com",  yahoo, icloud."

There is no reason that yahoo or iCloud email addresses should be affected by this. (is she using a Mac?)

If you do want to keep the domain & associated emails, and you want some help with this, get a new Cpanel PW, PM the login to me, and I'll have a look for you. MacHighway should also be able to clean this up - and then deal with the blacklisting by Spamhaus (the request to un-blacklist HAS to come from the host - not you) but this may take some time to take effect. I'd also tell them to move the domain to another IP - they likely have multiple servers with multiple domains. However it shouldn't be moved until it's cleaned up. And then just throw a page up there with the domain name on it or something - plain old HTML - just to be able to check the status of the danger warning etc.

You will have to request that Google review the site once it's cleaned up in order for the deceptive website warning to be removed. See: https://kinsta.com/blog/deceptive-site-ahead/

Tech / Re: e mails and blocked server

So...is it hacked? If you give us the URL (or want to send me a PM if you're not comfortable sharing it here) I can have a look. Is it a static site? Wordpress? Is the underlying software (PHP etc.) up to date? Current version is 8.2.

Has DKIM etc. been set up in Cpanel? https://bravonet.digital/2024/01/29/guide-to-setup-dkim-spf-and-dmarc-record-in-cpanel/

Has Google blocked the domain itself - i.e., if you go to it do you get the big red warning about an unsafe site?

What is the site's IP address - and have you looked to see if that IP is blacklisted? If this is shared hosting (likely) it might be someone else's site on the same IP - not your wife's - that is the problem.

Also - Google cannot prevent email from going to non-Gmail addresses - so if she cannot send to ANYONE then the issue is not Google. Google is not THAT powerful. ;) If, however the issue is sending to Gmail addresses only, then Google has likely flagged her domain. Wiping the site won't fix that - there is a process she'll need to go through: https://www.hostpapa.com/blog/marketing/what-to-do-if-your-website-was-blacklisted-by-google/

BTW - I'm a webmaster, so have some knowledge of all this stuff, though in 24 years of building websites, I've only had 2 hacked. (one an injection hack which I was never able to track down - didn't harm the site, but I did rebuild the site to solve the problem, and another over 2 decades ago which was as the result of a massive attack on the host I was then using - definitely not a site-specific issue in that instance). That said, if you've got a Wordpress site with something like Wordfence installed, you quickly become aware that almost all sites everywhere constantly face attempts at hacking, all day, every day - usually by bots trying passwords and common user names. (never, ever use "admin" as the user name for a website - though it's the PW that is far more important - it needs to be long, complex and unguessable).

DB, if you're still looking for it, it's here: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/

(note - near the top of the list since the file system goes by the first number, not the highest number...ie: the one, not the fact that it's 115)

I suspect you may have figured out an answer to this by now, but in case you haven't:

https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/reduce-file-size-keynote-presentation is one option.

Another is using Adobe's PDF settings if you have the full version of Acrobat, which allows you to select the quality of the PDF AND the resolution of the images.

Re: Office - that deal that Jon linked to seems to still be active and it's definitely cheap.

Please do understand though that these aren't straight up legit keys - they're what's known as "grey market" - ie: they're keys that were intended for a particular product channel - usually either the Microsoft Software Developer Network (MSDN) or TechNet for IT Professionals who pay a subscription fee - mostly intended for evaluation purposes. Or they're left over from a bulk buy of OEM licenses. Many of them will work - some won't. Some may work for a while and then stop working. And you almost certainly won't get any assistance from MS if you need it, as the thing with OEM licenses is that there is no support from the developer (support is supposed to come from the vendor - and that won't happen with these discounted ones sold online, because, of course, the OEM software is not supposed to be sold separately from the machine.) Anyway - as long as you are aware of all that and ok with it, then fine. One would hope that the deal being promoted by AppleInsider is one of the more reliable ones, but no way to tell. Also no way to tell if the key is US-specific, btw. (this is definitely an issue with keys intended for non-North American markets - I'm just not sure if they differentiate between Canada and the US as well for the perpetual licenses - they most definitely do for MS 365)

I now use MS 365 - it has a few useful perks that you don't get with perpetual licenses: software is continually updated, and you get 1TB of online storage per user with OneDrive. As I noted above: MS 365 is region/country specific - a 3rd party key bought in the US will not work in Canada. If you were to try to buy at MS 365 in the US from Microsoft directly, it will switch you to the Canadian site/pricing.

They're all wireless now - and rechargeable with a lightning cable as well. I love my Apple mouse. :) (after years of being a Logitech devotee).

You'll be very happy with the M1, methinks - it's a considerable upgrade from a 2012!!

Tech / Re: migrating from old Mac mini to new
« on: November 30, 2022, 11:27:08 AM »
Let's go back to basics here. Give us the model number of the LG monitor. It may be time for a new monitor - using an HDMI connector with an adapter may in fact be the issue. What sort of adapter are we talking about here? VGA to HDMI? (ie: is this thing a relic? Sorry - but no point in beating around the bush on this. ;) )

Which Mac Mini have you got? M1 or Intel? (and which model if M1 - the earlier one only supported ONE external monitor, apparently)

See: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/mac-mini/apd8e4fbbb97/mac - they recommend VGA to USB-C

And might want to read this too: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/very-old-monitors-with-my-mac-mini-m1.2366607/

I think you're just asking for trouble if this monitor is VGA only. But anyway - let us know.

If it's a monitor that's the same age as the old Mini, then you can spend under $200 and get something that will likely run circles around it now - with no connectivity issues. $300 will get you a 27 or 28" 4K. (see Amazon.ca)

Tech / Re: Affinity launches V2 with 40 per cent discount on all apps
« on: November 23, 2022, 09:16:25 PM »
On the Affinity website, I can get the spelling of color/colour to change depending on whether I go to the /en-us or the /en-gb version of the site (stick that in the URL - you'll see). Interestingly - there is no localization  for us Canadians - we just get served the US version of the site, though it DOES know that we're in Canada and shows us the pricing in Canadian dollars. Weird, since our spelling is mostly, but not entirely UK spelling - not US (exceptions: aluminium...which really is a strange one since EVERYWHERE else uses aluminium, not the North American "aluminum", "localize" and other "ize" words are preferred here, over "localise" which is more common in the UK and Australia, "buses" - not the UK "busses", "license" for the noun and "license" for the verb etc. It can be challenging when spellcheck keeps changing or insisting on the other version, LOL.

I have Publisher and Photo and both use Canadian spellings in the menus (colour, not color) - I assume because I have Canadian English chosen for my Mac in the language preferences, but in Affinity Publisher, because I do work for some US clients, I simply have "English" chosen in the spell check. BTW - if you look closely at the screen grabs on their website, they also have "colour" - when en-us pages are loaded and the text on the site is the US spelling. (swapping out the language is relatively easy - swapping out images to match local language would be a major pain).

While none of these apps are internet-related, some languages, such as HTML/CSS/PHP - are all written in English, with American spellings (having been developed in the US), and I think in the name of standardization, this has resulted in many software developers worldwide adopting American spellings as standard. It could get pretty messy otherwise. The main thing is to be consistent - Affinity apps are written in C++ and Objective C - neither of which has a lot of set terms, apparently.

BTW - Adobe Creative Cloud just serves up American English. They don't even have the option of British or Canadian English - it's just "North American English" - rather arrogant of them, eh? The other option is "International English" - whatever that is. However, within the apps like InDesign, in the spelling preferences you can select UK or Canadian English - but the default is US in the user interface as far as I can see.

LOL...Elon is a complete twit about some things (including Twitter - which I hated long before he bought it) but don't confuse that with Tesla. They're pretty terrific. We now have 2 of them - a 2018 model 3 and 2022 Model Y - and no ICE cars at all as of June. Our son has a M3, as of a couple of months ago. I think they're still well ahead of many of the other EV manufacturers; their battery tech (and range) is better, their over-the-air updates, including firmware - only Chinese manufacturer NIO also offers FOTA - add and improve features regularly. Are they perfect? No - of course not - but we had no doubts ordering a second one last fall - no other EV manufacturer came close. But Elon...yeah. A bit of a nutcase and definitely *not* my political cup of tea.

2-step verification with Gmail only applies when you're accessing it in a browser. If you're using a mail app, once you sign in, you should be good.

I did run into the 2-step thing today when I was fixing a problem on my son's MBP and had to log into my own Gmail account in a browser to get a password. So yes, they have indeed implemented it. I expected the verification to go to Messages like everything else does, but nope - it went to the Google app on my phone (which I never use and had to search for!) - it basically requires you to tap "ok" and that's it. No numbers to type in or anything like the bank/CRA etc. So better in that regard, though does mean you need to have the Google app installed.
