2009 / Kindle?
« on: March 20, 2009, 07:21:56 PM »
On the last MacNotables podcast, Chuck Joiner had Tonya Engst from tidbits.com and they were talking about the Kindle. She's had one for awhile and likes it a lot, but reccommends to wait before buying any ebook readers just yet. If you want to listen, it's here: http://www.macnotables.com/wordpress/

2009 / Creating a startup disk
« on: February 14, 2009, 08:53:25 AM »
Thanks, Tacit, Bob. The image is for the computers at work, which have to have the NYC Dept. of Ed. logo on the desktop and the programs the city has bought that come pre-installed when schools buy computers but I don't want all the documents the kids and teachers have created. So I think I'll back up all the documents, delete them, and then use either carbon copy cloner or the free super duper.

I remember that with OS ( use just needed a system folder to start up the computer but this is a little different.

Thanks, again.

Tex, the firewire drive has a disk image of the system. I need to create something to make it bootable.

I have a firewire hard drive with an operating system on it. I can't use it because it doesn't have a startup folder on it. How do I create one? Btw, it's OS X.

2009 / So, what are you doing with your iPhone?
« on: December 21, 2008, 08:27:05 PM »
Like Xairbusdriver, I'm also less interested in the phone and more interested in the handheld computer. I had the iPod touch and I loved it, but the always-on connection is wonderful. I've found it very handy for work, too. The voice recording apps (Griffin's iTalk is free), the to-do list ($10, my most expensive app by far), the wireless USB drive app (free), the spreadsheet program (99-cents)... It's like carrying an office around with me. Of course, all of these (except the voice recording, since I don't like the earbud microphone) are available for the iPod touch.

Pricey? A little. Some people buy computers more frequently than I do, some buy better cars, everyone spends their money on what they can afford and what they find to be of value. I wouldn't mind decent competition to bring the price down, but I've played with a lot of these things and nothing matches the iPhone.

And actually, only T-Mobile (a company I had for 6 years and was perfectly happy with) is cheaper. Verizon limits bandwidth, which is a deal-breaker. I used bandwidth in the gbs last month.

3. iTalk, a voice recorder
4. Bloomberg Financial
5.  Spreadsheet, very useful
6. Pano, a fun one that let's me take panoramic photos

2009 / So, what are you doing with your iPhone?

My favorites:

1. Things, which has been pretty helpful. I don't have the desktop version and the developer said this version can be run independently. $10.

2. vCardMailer: send contacts from Address Book. One of the best apps I have. $1.99

3. Bloomberg: financial news and stock tracker. Much better than the built-in stock tracker. Free.

4. PangeaVR: view QTVRs. Free.

5. Trulia: Real estate app. Some bugs, but really nice. Free.

6. Movies: Find movies and theaters, times, buy tickets. Free.

Apple announced a month ago that copy/paste would come from them, and that it was not a priority: link

Macworld UK said that it was coming in update 2.1: link, but the first link is quoting directly from Apple.

Btw, I'd love to have copy/paste.

You can already get a MacBook Air with the drive. On a recent Macworld podcast they didn't think these drives would be so mainstream because 1) they're mostly for businesses, and 2) flash drives are faster and lighter and dependable enough.

I just read it last night. I thought it was interesting that Apple doesn't do focus group studies. When the MacBook Air came out, the analysts all said that this was built for a specific segment of the market.
