2004 / any firewall hints and trips?
« on: February 02, 2004, 06:24:48 AM »
Hi Mrious....

Advice from Da Lowlands! I even could do this in Dutch biggrin.gif !!! I mean only if you're not French Speaking from Antwerp(en).... But for the sake of intelligibillity (spelling?) here it is in Common Speak! toothgrin.gif

Apart from all the sane advice about security, I have this little comment on using X's firewall together with iChat.... I understood that using the firewall prevented sending images?? I looked around in the preferences for the firewall and the system itself gives the possibillity to 'free' the port iChat uses (and it's possible to open ports which are not yet 'stated').... Perhaps that will solve the sending images thing!
Go to System Preferences, Internet/Networks, Sharing, Firewall.... and the rest will be pretty intuitive.... But! I just noticed that the window says: "allow incoming...." Dunno what it'll mean for sending though.... Hmmm.....

Naaah

I don't think a G5 owner would put a metal cutting device in his newly acquired superputer!!! Well, I wouldn't!

Hi Chris...

Although everybody's right about facing a multiprob. situation, I dare posting a probable 'cd recorder not found message' solution...I remembered the same thing happening with trying to burn a cd with Toast in OS 9.2 and i got the same warning... It turned out to be an extension conflict... but i never solved it until just now! And, voila, cd recorder found,  B) So.... In the extension manager you have to find the Disc-burner extension & USB authoring support and disable them.... Make sure Toast cd reader & USB support is enabled and then is The System  not confused anymore in which gear to use for burning!

I hope this works for you and Good Luck with the rest of this problem!

Hi Paddy!

Got some time on my hands now! wink.gif The Flu does that sometimes... I was inspired by your comments on this wackodude & his Dellified G5! Dropped some images in Photoshop, but to my bitter disappointment, I could not see any signs of Faking...Ok, some edges were blurred and pixellised...But after all it was a 71 dpi pic. The green lights do seem right! I thought I saw two! fluorescent tubes, which explains the strange reflections, esp. on the powersupp-case... And the reflections on the outer-edge, one is explainable by a 'fixing slot' (for mounting the side-panel) in the under-edge (near the powercase) and the the right-upper case-edge, well, beats me, but it looks 'controlled', I mean, there is no greenish glow on the rest... But I'm a bit baffled, light has this 'angle of coming in' and 'coming out'...and the up-right green light seems too far away and in a difficult angle to give that edge a reflection.... But there are two things that make me think this is real.... In that first image on the second page you can see the reflections of these cables in the shiny bottom of the G5 case...and I think thats very hard to fake... And in the image to show us his arts in cutting metal, you can see the inward bending of the metal, common in cutting metal...
Hmm, feel like a forensic detective, and I'm not a PS expert, maybe I got it wrong! But I think someone should tell his parents! nono.gif

Hi Kelly, thanx for the response! And now my head's buzzin' from the information in that 'MacOSXhints' article; Kernel, Page in/out, swapfile... Hmm, more cos I just experimented with OnyX, a free maintenance program and it adressed system-files etc. I didn't know what I was doing (and I was alarmed by an old saying: If it's not broke, don't fix it!) But I wanted to fool around, learning curve..., Everything went okay, more or less I guess, but I meddled with swapfiles... And I just read that I better could leave 'm alone... Well, we'll see I suppose! But! Another 256 mB chipset is on its way! Getting close to 1 G now... Ohh, I found out that the logging in is 'controlled' by Cookies?.... After the cache clean-up I was logged-out! Hihi

Hi Nikki!

I was just wondering about the same, but didn't get around posting the question about it! I don't understand it as well... When you start & close apps you will notice differences in those readings, but it looks like they will not go to 'zero', well they never will because the OS will use an amount of RAM of course... Anyway, you will see the amount of RAM dropped to this 'OS usage' when you restart the computer...
What I perticularly like to know about is the 'inactive' (ram) part, what is this, used or what?

Hi Chris!

Congrats, that was a bewildering story! And hope it holds... But, what is the CUDA button? And where could it be in a B&W rev1? There was def. not such a thing under the CPU heatsink.... But more to the bottom of the board (where the big powerplug comes in) there are two smallish, grey buttons...What do they do?????

2004 / Installing a .pkg/Repair permissions?
« on: January 05, 2004, 09:33:19 AM »
Thanx KPS....

Understandable now, those .pkg-files, it seems quite logical that Software Update needs to know whats 'in' or not! And so the 'drive-icon' is the result of an 'activated .dmg-file'...Aah! But now there rises another question, damn! I work with MSN Messenger 4 Mac and everytime I start it up (from the dock) the same 'drive-icon' appears... Should I then say that Mssngr 4 Mac is not installed properly? I mean, no other apps. behave like that, like, starting iTunes from the dock doesn't give a drive-icon on the desktop... But, Mssngr behaves normally I would say...What do you think?
And....Repair permissions was funny B), all kinds of messages and I didn't understand... But I got the remark: "permissions repaired", so, all is well! But I never noticed something was wrong!!!! wacko.gif ! Hmm, a lot to learn! BUT, thanx for the directions, I'll use that one after the next download! Oh, by the way, when repairing permissions, is it very important to quit all other applications? I ran iTunes, nice melodies from The Clash!

Hi All!

As a newbie I crash into several things I do not understand! What happened? Me, I'm running Panther on a B&W 350 mHz and bis jetzt no problems ( to be honest, still no problems, just really curious!) I wanted to download a Java 3D update and all worked fine, the installerwindow showed a neat cardboard box.pkg thing, the installer did it's job and at the end it optimized the system... Which takes a bit longer then the download... But 2 icons remained on the desktop, a 'drive-icon' and a 'filepaper-icon+.dmg'... I thought to trash it, I did just that... But, I wanted to know where the Java file went, so I found it in HD Panther/Library/receipts... jawdrop.gif With all the same cardboardbox .pkg's!!!! Why is it not in the Java app??? What are those .pkg's doing there, what is the 'receipts-folder'?

And, last but not least, though there are no problems.(brace for.... unsure.gif I read in the forum that is quite importante to 'Repair permissions' after a download... How to Do that?

Regards and Greetz, Stef
