Tech / MP3 into audio CD

Thank you. What would you consider the best burn speed to use when quality of sound is the most important thing? I would assume it's the slowest speed but I might be wrong. Thanks.

Unless you plan to play the CD on a really old player you don't need to convert to AIFF, mp3s will play on most CD players made in the last 10 years or so. I burned lot of them to play on my car CD player (2005) and all sound great. You just need to follow the correct steps.

Anyway, here are a bunch of links with descriptions (and some with pictures) showing the steps:

If you are ripping music from commercial CDs to burn your own, this is suggested for best quality:

I have tried this unsuccessfully. Here's what happens:
I choose from File/"Burn playlist to disc."
Disc format: Audio CD
"Please insert a blank disc." (I did that.)
OK, I have found the solution, and I reprint it here for the benefit of others too:

TO BURN AUDIO CD FROM ITUNES

Open iTunes (the tune is already in iTunes as an MP3).
Select the tune from Playlist, not Library
Insert blank disc
CD: Open Finder,
File/Burn Playlist to disc
Disc Burner: (Do not use M4PtoMP3) use: OPTIARC; (The choice of Optiarc I do not understand but it works.)
Disc Format: audio CD
Burn.

Action (choices): Open Finder, Open iTunes,
Open Disc Utility. I chose "Open Finder."
But it keeps saying "Please insert a blank disc" even though I did it.

Hi goodear,

If you organize the mp3's you want to burn into a playlist, you should be able to select the tune at the top of the playlist, go to the edit menu, hit "select all", then under the file menu, "burn playlist to disc" and then a dialogue box should open up with the various options to burn a CD. "Audio Disc" should be one of those options. iTunes should convert the files to CD format automatically in the burn process, I believe.

This is in iTunes 11.x, but I think it's pretty similar in most earlier versions. I'll go start up the ol' G4 and see what version of iTunes is in there and see if it is indeed similar.

HTH,

Chris

Thanks but I still am not getting it. Here's what I did. As you suggested I went to iTunes Prefs, General, and changed import settings from MP3 encoder to AIFF. Then I dragged the tunes from iTunes into the CD icon. I burned it, then put the CD into my CD player and no sound came out.
Now I don't know if this has anything to do with it but there is also now a folder on the desktop "untitled CD" with a faded "fallout shelter" emblem on the icon. This folder also contains the songs. Three of them are labelled as M4a audio and one as MP3 audio. The CD icon also contains the same. So maybe it means they weren't changed into AIFF? Perhaps I missed some important step here. Does "import" mean other than iTunes MP3 into CD format? or does it mean when I'm loading the song into my iTunes playlist in the first place? Please clarify? Thanks!

QUOTE(Xairbusdriver @ Sep 19 2014, 09:58 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Most CD players use ".aiff" formatted files. iTunes has the capability to convert/save/export/burn with that format but you will need to change the settings in the prefs. Strangely enough, they are in the "Import Settings!" iTunes->Preferences->General->Import Settings. The default is "AAC Encoder". You probably have changed yours to "MP3". Simply select the "AIFF Encoder" choice and you can now burn  playlist using that format. You will probably also want to change the "Setting:", in that same dialog, to "stomach" and select "44.1 kHz" for the Sample Rate and "16-bit" as the Sample size. You can probably leave the Channels on "Auto".

I tend to use the "gear" icon at the bottom of side bar to select "Burn Playlist to Disc" option. However, you should now see the "Audio CD" as the Disc Format, otherwise, be sure to uncheck "MP3 CD" or you'll be back to the wrong CD Player format! wink.gif

I haven't seen an accurate answer to this question anywhere. I have MP3s on my iTunes and I want to convert them into a format that is playable on a CD. How is this done? I have an iMac, system 10.6. My iTunes is version 10. Many thanks.

Tech / Real Audio samples no good any more?
« on: January 30, 2011, 07:45:11 AM »
I have short music samples on my website made with Real Audio.
http://davidrubinstein.net/Catalog.html
A few years ago maybe they were useful but now I'm not certain
that many people can open them easily. Does anyone know
whether there is an easy way to transform them into MP3 format
(or any format for that matter that is better than their current format)?
Thanks.

Tech / Kompozer to edit webpage

I have applied your formatting to the page and it now looks perfect. But I'm going to study your comments more closely to see where I have been going wrong. Thank you so much.

David, looking at the code, you've got all sorts of div tags in there that you don't need - plus a lot of other stuff that may be left over from things you had on the page in the past and changed. The page itself actually loads more or less ok in both Safari and Firefox, but clearly looks out of whack within Kompozer.

You haven't got a cascading style sheet (which might make things a little easier), so styles are applied inline for the most part - and there's a whole lot of stuff there that doesn't belong. I'm not sure where some of those tags came from in the first place (the <big> ones for instance), since Kompozer doesn't use that sort of antiquated tag anymore, from what I can see.

I would strongly suggest that you start looking at the pages in both the split view and the code/source view that Kompozer offers, and also, click on the HTML tags button on the lower right side so that you can see the tags being applied to each bit of text. That will give you a good sense of where all the stuff is that you can remove.

I'd remove ALL the <big> <small> etc. tags and use the paragraph and header tags to control your text sizes. For instance - on "David Rubenstein" all you need is the h1 tag and the color specified - not all that stuff that is there now. After removing all the extraneous tags there now (leave the color specification - ONE of them - you've got two on that particular bit of text for different colors of blue) then click on the dropdown that will say "body text" and select "H1" - voila. This will give you the default header size, which should be fine. For your subheads, do the same, using H2 or H3 when appropriate.

It might be faster to copy out the text (use design view, so all you get is the text) and put it into a new page in Design view in Komposer and reapply the styles. That would also eliminate all the unnecessary extra divs you've got there, which are screwing up the alignment somewhat.

I've done that quickly with the Upcoming Concerts page - you can check it out here and look at the source code in Safari or Firefox (View->View Source) and feel free to copy and paste the code into Komposer to use.

I added a width to the maincontent div to keep it a reasonable width - I set it at 780, but you may want it smaller for pages with paragraphs of text. I also centered that maincontent div by applying margin-left/margin-right "auto" which will keep the div centered on the page no matter how wide the browser window is. Since these styles are all internal (on the page) you can simply change the maincontent one as needed - for left aligned text, for instance, you would change "text-align: center" to "text-align: left"...

Hope that helps.

There are a bunch of fairly simple things you could do to make the pages a little better - add navigation to all (rather than just the link to the home page) and perhaps a border and some further text styling. But the basics are pretty straightforward if you can see what I've done, compared to the code that is there now.

I'm checking this right now...thank you so much. Let's see how far I can get with it. What I don't understand is where is all that stuff that doesn't belong there coming from. That's a rhetorical question...lemme see if I can remove it.

No, I don't care much for his solo piano works but I do love his piano concerti, especially 2, 4 and 5.

A little off-subject, but are the French piano works in April by chance by Saint-Saƫns?

I absolutely love his piano cencerti, and they are never played enough to suit me.

I believe Kompozer is a text processor. I use it to edit my webpages, but I am totally at sea when it comes to
paragraph alignment. As you can see on this page
http://davidrubinstein.net/UpcomingConcerts.html

I can't get the proper alignment. The Kompozer editing page adds boxes around paragraphs that I don't understand. It might also be obvious that I'm trying to do as much as possible on my own. I have tried to attach a screen shot here of what the editing page looks like.

QUOTE(Xairbusdriver @ Jan 29 2011, 10:28 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Perhaps if you give us some more details about those difficulties?
Are you referring to the html output or to how you 'tell' Kompozer to write it?

I'm sure you know that all you really need to create a web page is a simple text processor. Not a "word" processor, just an app that can create a plain text file, absolutely no text "formatting" needed or allowed. The browser determines the 'formatting' from the html tags in the text file. dntknw.gif

Just wondering if anyone is familiar with Kompozer for editing text to publish webpages. I am having some difficulty with text formating using it and was wondering if someone could help me with it. Thanks.

Yes, 9.2. How do I do that?

Download the PrintToPDF extension (click on the link in my prior post) & put it in your Extensions folder & restart.

Then open your AppleWorks file. Then go to Chooser (under Apple menu) & select PrintToPDF. Then select Print for your AppleWorks file. The AW file will be saved as a PDF file. (this essentially gives you the same feature as that in OS X.)

Ah. I see in my Choosr that Print to PDF is already there. I'll try it.

It has been inconsistent. Firstly, I unchecked all the downsample options. That worked and the photos came out nice, but on subsequent tries it failed on that account. Print to PDF made no difference.

I am using AppleWorks 6.2 and Adobe Acrobat 5.0 to create PDFs. When I insert a photo into
AppleWorks, it looks super clear on screen. When I make a PDF of the document, the photo looks much worse. Is there a setting on the Adobe Acrobat to make sure the photos come out as nice as the original? I looked for dots per square inch but coudn't find it. Thanks!
