However proportionate to its regular price tag, 300 is a bargin compared to 4 digits!

I can't wait to get my paws on this and take it for a test drive. Hopefully, my school gets it on their workstations so I can play around with it. (I don't know if a machine running on a Novell network is worthy enough to be called a 'computer'  rant.gif  laugh.gif )

It'll probably be some time before I get it for my laptop, considering I was forced to switch over to CS3 when my CS1 decided to cause problems. Adobe does offer pretty good deals for students tho! (take advantage of all the discounts you can mooch off of your kids and grandkids while you can!) They're basically giving away Photoshop for $199 and some places you can even find it cheaper!!!

Check out this site-- You don't only need to be a college student to receive discounts... Any student/faculty member is eligible, and even the general public for some products!

Tech / Almost complete loss of all disk space!!!
« on: March 23, 2010, 09:27:33 PM »
I'm a little confused...
Was it TechTool Pro that  grinch.gif 'd your hard drive space, or was Mac OS X the culprit??

For maintaining my disk, I use and love Drive Genius. I've only had the best of luck with ProSoft applications (absolutely LOVE DataRescue II as it has saved my . . . so many times that I have lost count!) and I would highly recommend them to anyone.

However, I have yet to 'defragment' my hard drive using DriveGenius (what the heck are we using Windows here?? **double take**). Has anybody done that yet with D.G. and if so how was the outcome?

iMac.com...
iPod.com...
iTunes.com..
iPhone.com...

But i guess they weren't able to nab iPad.com
which surprises me because Apple is usually willing to shell out big bucks for brand name domains

Tech / Adobe Illustrator CS4 for sale too cheap?!

Yes, it's a bid to get you to change to Adobe's software. Parallels offers their software for the upgrade price to those switching from VMWare Fusion 3. Adobe did similar things to lure people from Quark XPress to InDesign a few years ago.

Anyway, if the deal is still there and you want Illustrator, it's not going to come any cheaper and I see no danger buying from Amazon. smile.gif

I just discovered yesterday when I purchased Parallels 5 that the student version is $10 cheaper than the upgrade! I was going to buy the upgrade from Parallels 3 since the darned thing won't work with Snow Leopard (faill) and then discovered the student edition! With a valid .edu email address, you can nab it for only $40!

Tech / Now Software shuts down
« on: March 23, 2010, 09:10:28 PM »
Why let the project go to waste? They should make it open source and let some bedroom geeks play around with the code.

For Mac, it's pretty hard to make a calendar program that can compete with iCal. I'm not familiar with NOW's software but iCal works the best for me with its sharing and syncing to .mac and new compatibility with Google Calendar. Why would anyone want to use anything else??

(and then you have the watered-down outlook for mac... entourage... for exchange server users and "Pre-10.x "old timers that fear change)

Community / Tri-State area gets a beating from Mother Nature!!
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:59:40 PM »
So as many of you are probably aware, the tri-state area (Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York) got its butt kicked by Mother Nature this past weekend. Here on Long Island, we had wind gusts up to 75 MPH (only gusts up to 45 were predicted) with drilling rain, knocking down thousands of trees and utility poles. As a matter of fact, my house was one of the many that lost power because our 50 foot, 60 year old pine tree took out the telephone pole and established new domain in the middle of our culdesac. (pictures to follow later).

Because of all of the devastation, our power authority contracted work from all of the country. I've actually compiled a list of all of the states that trucks came from and it's interesting to see how far some of these trucks had to drive to get to Long Island!!

New York (duh)
Michigan
Indiana
North Carolina
Ohio
Florida
Connecticut
Massachusetts
Tennessee
Pennsylvania
Virginia
Rhode Island
Maine
Missouri
Ontario, Canada
Nova Scotia, Canada
Wisconsin
Mississippi (diverted because of non-union workers)

How did the other northeasterners handle the storm?

Alrighty so Cheap Zach ended up going with Shades instead of Blackout. I like Shades better not only because it's free but because it integrates with the Preference Pane and is not a standalone application. It is also very easy to enable/disable and use!

Tech / A little insight on 4G technologies...
« on: March 13, 2010, 12:09:59 AM »
I'm sure you are all familiar with 4G cellular technologies which are being deployed by Sprint and soon by Verizon and AT&T... Here is a little insight on how each is developing their network--

Sprint first launched their 4G service in Baltimore in December 2008, promising speeds of up to 12 Mbps (In reality, that means 2-3 Mbps average). CDMA carriers are using WiMAX technology; an old technology that broadcasts using microwave links over a wide area. Networks like these have been deployed as early as 2004.

So why did Sprint decide to go with it? Less work and faster deployment, obviously. It's old technology!

Verizon has their eyes set on LTE, or Long Term Evolution networks, which entail plans to expand and enhance current cellular technology. Deployment involves upgrading and replacing existing cells, erecting new sites, and launching new equipment to support the network (all that was involved in 3G too). LTE promises inexpensive opportunity for expansion and speed increase. A wiser choice over WiMAX. While Sprint is currently at an advantage for taking advantage of old technology as a quick way to market 4G and make some extra money, they plan to invest in the development of an entirely new network in the future and claim that WiMAX is just a shortcut.

Now onto AT&T... They are also taking advantage of LTE technology on their GSM network; however unlike Verizon, they have no plans on turning their back on 3G and even 2G. AT&T understands that launching an entirely 4G network is very time consuming, so they plan on taking advantage of the expansion opportunities that their 2G EDGE (which compares to Verizon's 3G network and its true speed is misconceived in their advertising campaign based on the way AT&T markets the technology) and 3G HSPDA network. They see opportunity to expand their 3G network to speeds up to and exceeding 7 Mbps. Through HSPDA+, their network has the ability to support speeds of up to 21 Mbps using technology that they already have their hands on and is on the market! Additionally, they are also able to merge both 2G and 3G technologies to offer customers increased speed and reliability. This is their short term focus, and I'd say that this approach is the smartest and will benefit them in the end, when competing with other carriers and also financially because they're able to save money in the deployment process.

More information about AT&T's plans can be found here--
