Tech / Adobe Flash "poltergeist" on a DT

There was nuthin' in the Downloads Folder . . . nor could Spotlight find anything related, anywhere. I did all that before posting here.

I had no idea that something might be lodged in the Application Support Folder of the Library. Unfortunately, no such folder was found therein.
Yes, there is a screen shot . .  . I don't have it yet, when I get it, I'll amend this post with it.

However, I stumbled on (a) solution, mostly by good luck. Sorting over the alternatives I'd already pursued, I speculated that something might be "stuck" (technical term) in the Desktop/Screen Savers Prefs folder. Bingo. There IT was, NOT in the thumbnails, just resting in the little display window.

So I had my friend (we were doing this by sharing screens in Messages) select one of the default pics and voilà . . . it evaporated from the Prefs Folder – where it appeared to have precisely the same ghostly-overlay character as was the one on the Finder/Display)

A friend asks for my help with a vexing problem he encountered shortly after upgrading to Mountain Lion on his MacBook Pro . . . it may not be related to his upgrade, but it is puzzling in the extreme and, thus far, insolvable.

Just after his subsequent download of the latest version of Adobe Flash (but apparently without opening (or installing) it, a semi-transparent and enlarged image of the notice from Adobe that the dmg was prepared to be activated appeared on his display. Nothing we have subsequently attempted has removed it!

No dmg opens on the DT, no dmg can be found anywhere on the Mac, the “message” remains a ghostly presence on the DT, irrespective of multiple shut downs & restarts, or using Disk First Aid. No Force Quit options are available. No dmg shows in the Device roster.

As easy as an OS reinstall is via the Recovery Disk, I did not wish to advise him to execute it if some simpler course of action has been overlooked.

Any ideas earnestly welcomed.

My stable of Mac products is now serving a quite specialized function as my life and activities are more restricted by the exigencies of age.

I got my 1stGen iPad on about Week 1, enjoying it immensely until my arthritic fingers couldn't manipulate the KB I bought from Kensington, initially to accomplish typing at reasonable speed.

Because I am now with Lil during much of her waking hours while she reads and watches TV (her computing, so important to her for so many years is now increasingly difficult for her), my getting/answering MAIL, Googling the 'net, etc are now increasingly important to me. The iPad, while VERY portable, just wasn't enough "computer" which is what led me to an MB-Air that, thus far, is THE solution. Absolutely Perfect, which turned out to be such a surprise.

Full-size KB, dazzling display/wonderfully large FaceTime/speedy internet connection/fast printing when I need it/etc./etc./etc. all are "there" @ just over 2 lbs. No HD is simply a non-issue, since networking with my trusty iMac is so fast and easy.

The iPad has become a large, easy to read, TV remote with the help of this nifty app . . .

My 4s iPhone is invaluable (as a phone) primarily because it's "Blue-toothed" to my hearing instruments via a streamer manufactured by the hearing aid company, AND as a wonderful camera that has "retired" all previous cameras. No need for any other bells-or-whistles for us these days.

Not that "one-size fits all" by any means, but the MB-Air is far more important to us these days than an iPad ever could achieve.

Yup. It was the Consultant I encountered who pointed out that surprising "fact". It has been working, as I said, "OK" (and far better than previously) but recently  abandoning my iPad (and it's KB unsuited to my arthritically-challenged hands) for a new Air has emphasized that I might enjoy the Apple network even more with a "new" repeater.

We shall see.

Tech / Pogue (today) on extending a WiFi network

I'm like most people (guessing here!) that placement of my Extreme is dictated by where the cable enters our residential space. For an est 8-10 years (w/2 generations of Extremes + 2 Expresses placed throughout the house) I have tried to achieve a really workable network - essentially from one corner to the opposite, in a 3000 sq ft ranch plan. All I've ever gotten is ok when 've been hoping for WOW!.

I need some kind of repeater on steroids, apparently.

Relatedly, when I had an MB-Pro set-up in the distant corner of the house (from the Extreme) I could "see" the Westin Hotel's network, approximately 4000 yards distant on the shore of SF Bay, while I only get 1-3 bars from one corner of the house to the opposite.

Thus my query about Pogue's column today.

Does anyone know if this device will/can work harmoniously with an Apple Extreme. since a couple of years of experience using one with 2 Expresses is problematical at the worst or spotty (or viscous) at best.

I, too, am touched to be remembered by such good friends – only a very few of whom have I had the pleasure of meeting in person. Bless the 'net, however, for making our friendships at TeeEss a reality.

The exigencies of age have succeeded in taking the Poet Lariat out of his saddle (regrettably) but please know of my appreciation for your thoughtfulness.

Maybe all is not awry @ Logitech/Harmony

I got "Daphne" who very much seemed to know what to do. She was familiar with The Problem, which I described fully armed with Tacit's analysis

"We" trashed the old install, then other 6-8 items buried  in Library/Preferences and elsewhere – with names that were alphabetic and/or numeric, but all obscure and quite unfamiliar. Not everyone with ML, she said, has to go through the entire drill as I did

AOK now.      She also said their engineers are working a new update to make it easier.

Very patient operative, like the old days with Harmony. I've always thought it was the very best "universal" remote (primarily because of the web site's role in setting-up) though there have been very uneven experiences with tech support. Daphne may indicate an "upgrade" there, too.

Everything's copacetic!

Since AppleCare "fixed" my own stupidity in screwing-over the first ML install, it's been a genuine pleasure to use. Best OS I can recall . . . really. A Voyage of Discovery, agreed, , but I hope I'm not yet too old to learn, since the rewards for doing so with my trusty iMac are manifestly so great.

IAW Paddy & ABD.

Kimmer: We've used Harmony Remotes since I bought the first one at least 12-15 years ago from the company's Founder/President @ a MacWorld . . . sitting in one of the "tiny booths against the back wall"  (where the great stuff used to be found!)

Our current model ("One") is the best yet, is rechargeable, and its HELP function works perfectly. It's the software-writing Neanderthals at Logitech who have decided not to update their app (per Tacit's always incisive analysis) that has left us out in the cold.

Fortunately the new Sony BlueRay player has it's own amazing remote. Our other "boxes" (Comcast cable, Bose theatre sound, and Panasonic plasma flat screen are tamed-and-coordinated beautifully by pre-ML installed Harmony software.

As soon as I find out    from the President of Logitech when they plan to truly support their customers, I'll come back here and report.

Yes, before I posted I changed the GetInfo panel to Read/Write for all three "parties": Myself, the Admin, and Everyone

It doesn't surprise me that Logitech is well-behind the curve.

I have a new Blu-Ray player that I want to control with my Harmony One Remote.

When I try to open the Harmony SW I get this . . .

Having just lived through MountainLion permission problems as well as a being a certified Enraged Logitech Customer (customer non-service NOT hardware) I don't know where to go to "give" this permission

Thinking it was simple, I first went to GetInfo and reset Read/Write in the panel for both "myself" and the Admin. No effect.

I do not want to have to confront the nitwits at Logitech "service" IF this is merely an Apple problem I don't grasp.

Whadoyouthink? Despite the overprinting of the Harmony Logo atop the Apple warning sign, is there something I can do to MtnLion settings to solve this issue?
