2006 / Lost Desktop Folders

I'm running Tiger, latest update, on my mini. It dramaticaloy slowed down. I ran ONYX mantenance to repair permissions, delete, etc. This did not help. Then I noticed I was logged in twice. I shut down aqnd restarted but that did not help. Then I noticed all folders on the desktop were gone.The folder desktop was also empty. I can't find any of the missing folders or contents of those folders.

I presume I must rebuild these folders.

Does anyone know what happened or why? I don't want to do what must have happened again
