Tech / Repeating emails
« on: June 10, 2014, 02:16:54 PM »
Deletion of MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 from ~/Library/Mail/V2 solved the repeating mail problem for me.

Repeats began after installing Mavericks. I have POP account and Mail is set to delete messages from server immediately after they are downloaded to Mail.  It remains to be seen if this is a permanent fix.

2009 / Apple releases 10.6.2

No problems with update, using Combo updater. Most noticeable improvement: checking permissions with disk utility has been accelerated enormously. Also as fast as it used to be in Tiger.

2009 / Skype on a MacBook
« on: October 31, 2009, 09:30:57 AM »
I have no trouble using Skype on my MacBook - for phone calls, video calls, chat. I have Core 2 Duo MacBook (now running 10.6.1, but Skype also worked with 10.5.6-8) and Skype (version 2.8.0.722, but 2.7 versions also worked). I suspect the problem is not with your macBook but with your Internet provider.

2009 / Snow Leopard - glitches, updates and other essential info
« on: September 16, 2009, 02:07:42 PM »
Installation went without problems on my Core 2 Duo MacBook (although I had to check with Take Control of Upgrading to Snow Leopard to figure out the restarts which occurred during the upgrade process, rather than after completion as in previous OS X upgrades) as did upgrade to 10.6.1. with Combo updater.

Office 2008 working fine so far. Eudora 6.2.4 seems to have a few more glitches in Snow Leopard than in Leopard (in particular, messages with attachments seem to get lost somewhere before finally arriving), but still seems to work well enough to continue to be my primary email program.

2008 / Services Menu II
« on: November 14, 2008, 05:41:23 AM »
If you like the Services Menu and want to make it more efficient to use, download Service Scrubber (donationware - http://www.manytricks.com/servicescrubber/).  This handy program allows you to delete items from the Services Menu (Third Party applications only) to shorten the list. It also allows you to add keyboard shortcuts to items in the Services Menu. Works with both Tiger and Leopard.
For Tiger users, there is another program - Hot Services, free from Maker of DevonThink (http://www.devon-technologies.com/download/index.html).  Hot Services moves the Services Menu to its own, more accessible place on the Menu Bar. Devon Technologies has a number of other free applications that are worth checking out.

2008 / Vacation printer
« on: August 11, 2008, 10:25:50 AM »
Thanks for the suggesitons. I purchaed an HP LaserJet P1006 - because it was on sale at Staples and comes with $20 rebate. The only problem was the software on the CD was woefully out of date (not able to run with Leopard installed) and I had to drive back down the hill (4 miles) to connect to the net in order to download the current driver from HP. Works fine now.

2008 / Vacation printer
« on: August 07, 2008, 09:01:24 AM »
Rather than lugging my laser printer to and from our vacation home (the car is overloaded as is), I would like to get a printer to leave there. The printer will sit unused for 4-6 months at a time. Which printer will tolerate this better: laser printer or inkjet printer? I will need it almost exclusively for black and white text printing.

2008 / Dramatic decrease in SPAM
« on: March 25, 2008, 08:17:39 PM »
I have also seen a dramatic decline in spam in the past 2-3 days - from 30-50 per day to 4-8 per day. Primary spam filtering is done by ISP (Sympatico.ca).

I have no difficulty booting from external clone (made by SuperDuper!) and then running Disk Warrior to check internal hard drive on G4 iMac, G4 macMini, or Core 2 Duo Macbook. The problem of some unidentifiable file on internal hard drive being accessed by the external clone and thereby preventing unmounting of the internal hard drive disappeared with OS X 10.4.11, at least for me. With newest version of SuperDuper!, I have no problems running Disk Warrior when booted from cloned external hard drive.

I had the same problem at one point in early versions of 10.4. The problem was not unique to SuperDuper! It occurred with all cloning programs I tried. Disk Utility also failed to unmount the internal hard drive when I tried to Repair Volume while booted from clone on external hard drive. The problem disappeared at some point during the upgrading of Tiger and now no longer occurs with OS X 10.4.11. I can't remember which upgrade of OS X 10.4. fixed the problem.

The only suggesiton Dave Nanian (SuperDuper! developer) had was to make sure the internal drive and clones on external drive had same names. This did not solve the problem for me.

I suggest to upgrade to 10.4.11.

2008 / Apple releases Safari 3.1
« on: March 18, 2008, 09:56:15 AM »
Curious problem with Safari 3.1 and 1Password. On my G4 iMac (OS X 10.4.11) and Safari 3.1 (PPC version), 1Password icon appears as expected on the Safari toolbar and functions normally. However, (as reported by many at 1 Password forum), 1 Password icon does not appear on the toolbar on my Core 2 Duo Macbook (OS X 10.5.2) with Safari 3.1 (Leopard version). Since Camino is my default browser, this is not a major issue, but makes Safari not very usable at the moment on my MacBook.

2008 / Internal HD and External HD Backup
« on: February 13, 2008, 03:28:18 PM »
According to Dave Nanian at SD Forums who checked with Alsoft, the out of order report on the Clone of the Internal HD does not signify anything of importance. It always occurs when you run Disk Warrior to check a new or updated clone created by SD, reporting about 32-34% of files out of order.

2008 / OS 10.4.11 Update

The only problem I have had with 10.4.11 (which first appeared with 10.4.10 and persisted with 10.4.11) was the sudden failure of the Superdrive in my G4 iMac. This problem has not been unique to me, as there have been several long threads about it at the iMac Discusssion Forum at Apple Support. Curiously all of these threads have been closed recently by Apple. I reported the Superdrive as a bug to Apple Bug Report. Unlike all previous problems I reported to Apple Bug Report which received some kind of prompt response, I heard nothing back for nearly 2 1/2 months (Nov 1 to Jan 10). I just got an email stating the Apple Engineering would like to investigate this problem further and would I please mail my iMac to Cupertino! As this is my main machine and is working fine other than the SuperDrive, Apple will have to wait awhile. Hopefully, one of the many other sufferers of this Superdrive Failure will send their iMac to Apple.

Ron, is this problem only with iMacs? Or are other machines affected as well? I have a Superdrive in this iBook, and I'd just as soon stick with 10.4.10 if any of these machines might be affected. I don't use Safari much, so unless there's a compelling reason to use use the newer version, I might just stick with what works.

Thanks everyone for your responses; Harv, I'm all about verified backups after the failure of my MDD last winter!

All the complaints about Superdrive failure that I have seen relate just to iMacs.

2007 / Leopard's firewall, is it working?
« on: December 08, 2007, 08:50:00 AM »
How are you connected to the Internet? If you are connected via a router, then the router probably has a firewall which is why you see no difference in Shield Up tests regardless of the Leopard Firewall settings.
Also, do you have 10.5.0 or 10.5.1 installed. Appledchanged the firewall settings in the upgrade.
There are  long discussions of problems and unknowns about the Leopard firewall in Leopard Support Disccusions at Apple: one example - http://discusssion.apple.com/thread.jspa?m...00&#5799600
