QUOTE(krissel @ Jun 12 2015, 01:12 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Just to clear up a point, updaters come in two forms:

• the simple updater which will take one to the next level (say 10.7.4 to 10.7.5)
• the combo updater which can be applied to any version of the major OS (10.7-10.7.5) and can be run even if you already have 10.7.5 on your Mac. This is the one that you must have finally applied since the simple updater would tell you no because it already is on your Mac.

Here is the link for the 10.7.5 combo which I assume you used.

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1582?locale=en_US

Anyway, just keep working with the new account and when you are completely comfortable with knowing nothing is missing, then feel free to delete the old one.

I appreciate all this info. It's good to know. I'm positive I downloaded the combo updater. I found evidence of the simple updater; didn't note the date of it.

thanx.gif One thing I should ask: since the old user account is set up as a "Shared" account, am I right that anything not backed up will be deleted along with the old one?

Is that number a "4" or a "5"?

The number is "5".

Did you follow that instruction and Restart?

Yes, I did restart.

I believe I'm beginning to get the picture why I was getting the message "…Update Combined can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update". (So that there is no confusion, the update did go through the download process after a few tries.) This is a "10.7.5" updater and my numbers have been "10.7.5" for some amount of time.  dntknw.gif I remember doing something and the number changing from "10.7.4". I probably downloaded the update as soon as it became available.  wacko.gif

you said you downloaded the 10.7.5 update but did you apply it?

In applying the updater, do you mean clicking the yellow box and following the instructions ending with "restart"?

QUOTE
I can't find where you said you ran the updater.

The download engine is the only evidence I can find of the download after restarting.  dry.gif  If I am to do anything else to "run" the updater, evidently, it hasn't downloaded properly.

The reason you can't use the keyboard shortcut is because the "frozen" app has first dibs on any keyboard input.

When Mail first started freezing up, I could use command+option+Esc to force it to quit. As the "damage" (for lack of a better word) progressed I had to resort to another way of closing Mail.  BTW, I believe this is the only keyboard shortcut I know.

QUOTE
next step is to change one of those other user accounts to an "Administrator"! I suspect they are not set up that way right now.

When I set up the other user accounts I set them up as "Administrators". When I get this all sorted out I will probably want to change that to only the one I primarily use. I am already using the new user account I set up in order to see if the Mail app is good, which it is.

That's kinda what I thought was happening. I feel like I'm getting a bit of an education here. If I could only get a grip on some essential lingo.  Thinking.gif

"Force Quit" is not in any 'browser'. It is under the 'Apple' menu at the extreme left-hand end of every Menu Bar. It is there no matter what app(s) you might be running.

Well, you learn something every day… I have been using keyboard shortcut to "Force Quit" anytime I needed to. I think I only learned this morning that Force Quit is in the drop-down under the Apple. I told you I'm old and the older I get the less observant I get.

QUOTE
Force Quit by using the "browser> apple> Force Quit."

With the corrupted Mail [wha-cha-ma-call-it that I've been talking about all this time] open, Force Quit no longer works using the usual keyboard shortcut. I'm not sure what is normal, but in this case the curser is a spinning ball except on the the right side of the menu bar and the dock. Since I can go to a browser (or some place else) where the apple is in the menu bar I can Force Quit Mail.

QUOTE
I am also confused by your reference to "this user" account/folders/stuff. Who is "this"? Do you mean "my"?

I hoped I was making clear what I was talking about when I said, "Keep in mind that Mail for the other two users has no problems".

I guess if I don't know what I'm talking about I can't expect you to, huh, blush-anim-cl.gif if you aren't a mind reader?  oops.gif that wouldn't help either, would it. doh.gif

So, if you don't have any more questions to ask that I could try to answer or advice to offer, we've done all we can here. thanx.gif

Folks, I get ready to remove the entire system user where the corrupted mail is then want to try one more thing. Keep in mind that Mail for the other two users has no problems.

I have re-read this entire thread and realize I have not been, methodically, following your instructions; reporting to you what I've done.

Besides getting the Combo Updater downloaded, I have followed instructions, "Remove Mail saved state" with no result.

Here is what is happening when I open Mail in this users folder:

1. Usually, clicking any Mail icon starts the spinning wheel. (Force Quit will not quit mail. Shutting down and re-booting doesn't quit Mail. To force quit I have learned to go to a browser> apple> Force Quit.)

2. Once in a while preferences has opened and I can get as far as to click Accounts. If it opens at all, it is completely blank and spinning wheel starts.

I found this page in Apple Support: Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Learn how to re-index a folder or an entire volume for Spotlight.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201716. I don't know what else it might have done, but it didn't affect Mail.

I believe I have done everything I know to do to save the contents of this users folder in preparation for removing it, including having Time Machine running since May 29. What do you think, shall I go for it?

And, I do want to report that HD available storage space is 73.38 GB of 159.18. (It wasn't the only thing, but something my young grandson had downloaded made a lot of difference.)

Liz, which version of the OS are you using now? Please look under the Apple symbol in the main menu bar in the Finder ->About this Mac and let us know.

"Version 10.7.5"

If you're sure you don't need it, (really sure!)

Mail is totally useless there. Perhaps it is not beyond fixing but I have resigned myself that I'm not qualified to do the fixing. The color wheel is more active in that user folder. So, could you suggest reasons why I might need it - possible hidden things that I wouldn't be aware of? I, defiantly, don't want to do anything foolish. Been there, done that! Isn't there a procedure to follow so that nothing gets lost in the process?

I have a new User folder established, though, I think I fought the good fight to keep the old.  angry.gif  sad.gif  ohmy.gif

Liz, how much room do you have left on your hard drive?

When I wrote about the HD space there was just 17.76 GB out of 159.18 GB. After some "house cleaning" I have 52.71 GB. I'm not happy with such little space when only a short time ago I had less than half the space used.

I'm puzzled as to why I'm still not able to download the combo update; getting the same message, "This volume does not meet the requirements for the update".

QUOTE
Not sure why someone putting stuff in their DropBox would affect your disk space

What I can't figure out is why my HD got so bloated. I did see a decrease in available space after having around 400 photos dropped into the DropBox. It hardly amounted to a drop-in-the-bucket compared to where it was this morning.

Could the two other users make that much difference? I opened "Shared files" so I would have access to everything especially in the one I will be using all the time.

BTW, is it time to completely remove the old user from the computer? I don't find anything lurking there that I can't access with shared files.  Thinking.gif  But… if that user is removed will I still have access to those "shared files"?

As for the slowness - how much space do you have left on your hard drive?

You are so right about space left on the hard drive. There was a noticeable reduction of space when a family member sent photos to Dropbox. But that didn't put it near where it is now. For whatever reason, I now have almost no space at all left. I'm working on finding out what and where the bloat is.

What would I do without you!! thumbup.gif

I didn't pay enough attention that https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1524?locale=en_CA is for version 10.7.4 or earlier. I gave my version 10.7.5 a try. It didn't download properly the first time but the second and third time it did but I got this message: "This volume does not meet the requirements for the update." Bummer!! Any suggestions?

I'm sorry, Paddy, I reread your post where you said that you don't care for Best Buy. Since they are only blocks from me and the closest Apple Store is several miles, if we haven't soon gotten to the bottom of this, I'm sure I would have been paying a visit to Best Buy.

Bottom line is that I have my email account - only short of the old mailboxes where I have "stuff" saved. Web mail does contain everything, though. I'm sure I can live with this new system user account. My daughter-in-law asked if I think it's time to buy a new computer. I'm not as long as there isn't anything seriously wrong with this one.

Something I don't think I have mentioned is that the computer has gotten quite slow in changing pages, opening apps, etc. This is much like the email having declined over a period of time. The color wheel had been hardly evident until Mail deteriorated. Is there a possible connection?

Then go look for the com.apple.mail file in the Containers folder.

Paddy, my Mail content isn't in the old Users Containers folder but it is in that folder of my new Users account. I suppose it's no wonder my original email account isn't opening. I still didn't find "com.apple.mail" listed, only all my folders, etc. that were missing.

Between these two sites: http://osxdaily.com/2014/07/11/share-files...ounts-mac-os-x/ and OS X Mountain Lion: Share files with others who use your computer, I have my files moved to public sharing.  yahoo.gif  I haven't had time yet today to look into this one you shared with me: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1524?locale=en_CA

I hope all this makes sense.

To be continued... rolleyes.gif

Liz, given that you've tried various things AND Mail works just fine on another account, I'm tempted to get you to try the last option in this article:
http://www.macissues.com/2014/10/19/fix-ma...ng-to-yosemite/

Paddy, before looking for the Containers directory I tried again rebooting in "Safe Mode". I haven't taken it out by restarting the computer, although, I will shortly. In "Safe Mode" I again moved the com.apple.Mail.plist and the V2 folder to the desktop. (Those have again rebuilt.) Having no result, I opened the Containers folder and did a thorough search for the “com.apple.mail”. Unless I misread the instructions and found a different Containers folder (the instructions called it Containers directory) nothing pertaining to mail is there.

The path I took to get to it was, Finder, held the Option key, selected Library from Go Menu. Opened the Containers folder. I could do a screenshot to show you what is in it but I can assure you, assuming, I followed the correct path, no “com.apple.mail” exists there.  tears.gif

Then I called the Best Buy Geek Squad. !! To make a long story short, after doing their remote diagnostic, they offered three options: take the computer either to one of their stores or an Apple Store, or, as I think you suggested, use the disk to remove and restore OS. ?? The third might well be the path I'll take and that is to abandon my current user site and establish another one.

I bought this iMac new 8 years ago. I'm wondering if having a good Apple tech give it a thorough look-over would be a good idea. They might even find a solution to the Mail problem. What do you think?

Mail has rebuilt brand new in my Mail app. Checking user->library->Mail; com.apple.Mail.plist and the V2 folder are showing up there. I understand since Mail is still not functioning properly, somewhere there is still bad/corrupt data.

Here is where I am now:

I can get as far as writing an email but clicking 'send' causes Mail to freeze. Trying to access preferences it freezes. Does that give you an indication where I can go now to clear this up?

It would make sense, in hind sight, to have been using Time Machine so I would have a pre-trouble time to go to. There just has to be a way to do what I need to do even if it is the hard way.

There is the option of going to the Apple Store but you can call me stubborn if you want to; I've been called it before. I prefer tenacious.  whistling.gif  toothgrin.gif
