2003 / Safari 1.0

I'm going to give auto fill a second chance.

I had to disable it in the last version. Sure hope it works in this one.

Extraordinary is the word, all right!

The ones in Venice are very, very beautiful & capture the mood of the city.

Thank you.

2003 / Internet Explorer 5.2.3 for Mac OS X
« on: June 18, 2003, 04:19:39 PM »
I did update IE and
like Bill......Repair Disk Permissions acted like it was on steroids, it spun by so fast.

At first I thought, what in the world's wrong. I guess it had a lot to do after putting in IE 5.2.3. Never had so many corrections.

I use Safari all of the time but intend to keep IE for now.   B)

2003 / Safari.

It loads so much faster than IE.

The only problem I've had with Safari is that their last version let you have an auto-fill function & I implemented it right away as I missed using one.

Alas, it's very "in-your-face" & over wrote my dotMac log-in over & over. I could not access my account at all. In my case, the auto-fill overwhelmed everything.
After a lot of trouble-shooting & whining, I was lucky enought to get just the right person in the dotMac group who knew what was happening.
We disabled the auto-fill function & I have had zero trouble since.

I do keep IE on hand but seldom use it anymore.

2003 / Aliases & Dock
« on: June 04, 2003, 09:18:36 PM »
I may be misunderstanding your message but I do not put aliases in the Dock.

Instead, I drag the application I want to be there to the Dock & drop it in there.

In effect, this action creates the correct sort of alias that you can use for easy access to the application. As it should, the original remains in the application folder.

HTH & is not utterly confusing.

2003 / Safe Boot & fsck -y
« on: June 04, 2003, 01:24:05 PM »
>>>To me it looks like an OS X version of Extensions Disabled. <<<

Thanks for the article #....yes, that's exactly what it sounds like.

I do run fsck -y on a more or less regular basis, maybe once a month.

We seem to read the same forums....I started seeing the references to the "safe mode" or "safe boot" very recently & am also curious.

I haven't had the time yet to really delve into it.

When I get time & learn anything I'll post here.

2003 / Need Help - want startup disk with DiskWarrior on

If you go to MacFixit's forums, you can address the query directly to the MicroMat tech rep who monitors those forums & he will most probably post the instructions or give you the link you can use to get them.
He is quite generous with his help.
I had the instructions at one time, from MicroMat, but don't have them now.

2003 / Adobe Reader 6.0
« on: May 28, 2003, 02:44:42 PM »
My experience was identical to Bruce F's.

After dropping it into Applications, I immediately double-clicked on a pdf file in my Documents folder & it was ok. I then drug a pdf file onto the Reader icon & it also opened ok.

MacFixit today also mentions ...

"Save as PDF" function killed In an apparent attempt by Adobe to increase attention for the commercially available Acrobat 6.0, you can no longer save documents in Adobe Reader 6.0 as PDFs from the Print menu. Instead, you can only save a copy of the original document using the "Save a Copy As.." option in the File Menu."

I just checked that out & it does still work for me. I opened an old Word document, used the print dialog & selected "save as PDF."  It saved it as a good PDF.    ...so I'm not sure why they are saying that function is killed.

Yes! We need to keep them.

2003 / Carbon Copy Cloner
« on: May 21, 2003, 09:02:48 PM »
Why am I posting this? Who else is possibly interested in the things we do with our Macs but us? It is the Mac person who understands the elation & satisfaction that we get when we do a daunting task well.

So..........having said this.......

I erased the 2 partitions from my 60 GB ext Fw drive this afternoon & using Carbon Copy Cloner, successfully cloned 10.2.6 to it. I'm using only one partition now as I can't boot up into 9 anymore, anyway. Erasing went really fast & the cloning took a little over 20 minutes.

With fear & trembling, I selected the ext drive as the drive to start up from & it did!
CCC had created the clone so faithfully that even my desktop picture was the same.

It's almost scary how easy it is to do.

Now I can boot up from it when I want to & run DiskWarrior or Disk Utility First Aid.

Hooray for me.

2003 / Does TS make you feel Dumb?

TS never makes me feel dumb even when I know for sure I have been.

Civility reigns!  If someone famous hasn't already said that ... they should have.

2003 / Disk Warrior 3.0
« on: May 20, 2003, 10:06:54 PM »
OK, Kelly. Thanks for the information. I sort of guessed that may be it.
This week-end, I'll erase the ext drive & reformat it & then use CCC.
This'll take time, I know.
How is it I used to have more time when I was still working?
The iMac is really beautiful. 17" screen & pretty fast. Now that even Eric's Ultimate Solitaire is on OS X, I never booted into 9 anymore so that's ok.   biggrin.gif
