2004 / Websites look like gibberish!

I think I am having a problem with my Times font.  Some websites look all gibberishy, although can still barely be read.  Letters are backwards, upside down and there are some random characters thrown in here and there.

How do I go about figuring out if there is a font problem and how should I fix it?

I am using Panther, 10.3.2

2004 / The G4 has been upgraded...

Hey Harv,
The first thing I did before check the disk for errors was check for permission errors and corrected them...  After that when I checked for disk errors, there was apparently some major errors that could not be fixed.

Good thing I didnt have too many things on that hard.  Most of my major stuff is on my external, so doing a reformat and complete reinstall wasn't too much of a problem.

As for everyone else's posts about hard drives, I am going to start looking into a new one in the near future...  I need to cut down my spending for a bit...  Being broke after I got back from Europe and having to charge most of my Christmas gifts is gonna set me back for a bit   Not too bad though

2004 / The G4 has been upgraded...

Hi everyone!

I decided to go with the 1ghz processor and the radeon9000pro mac edition video card.  I also bought Panther.

Processor and video card came in before panther so i put them in right away because i just couldnt wait anymore!  Installation was a breeze.  The only thing I have ever done in my computer before was install more RAM.  This was just as easy.  Turned on my computer and checked System Profiler...  Everything showed up correctly.

Panther came in the mail a couple days later.  I took out the new Radeon card and put my old one in for the installation of Panther.  I figured it was a smart thing to do because of them not playing nice together.  Tried to install Panther, it wouldnt install...  Tried again...  Wouldnt install.  Did it a couple more time and it wouldnt work.

Booted from the Panther CD, ran the disk utility and it said there were errors on my installation drive.  Tried to fix a few times, and it wouldnt work...  Solution says to erase hard drive and start over...  Booted back into Jag, salvaged everything i needed, and reformatted...

Installed Panther no problem after that,  Updated it via software update to 10.3.2, put my new video card back in..  Viola!  It works beautifully

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that helped in my other posts about upgrading.  Next thing I am going to buy is a new HD  Is there a difference between mac and PC hard drive.  Like, could I run to Best Buy and grab any hard drive from there and plug it in?  Or does it have to be a special Mac drive?

I've always wondered the same thing!  It seems like the larger the hard drive, the more memory thats missing.

Thanks!  I think I am going to go with the ATI...  

While looking on the Panther website, way at the bottom it says "Processor upgrade cards are not supported."

Does this mean they won't provide support later down the road if there are problems, or does Panther not work with upgraded processors.  I am going to get this one.

Stupid question...

I have an apple CRT Studio Display 17 inch...  Is the connection VGA?  I think it is.  I'm trying to figure out what video card to get.

Also, whats better?  The ATI video cards or the Apple nVidia?  The apple cards are way cheaper...
What would be the best video card for me?  Dont want to spend *too* much

Thanks for the help everyone.  This is all making things so much easier!

As for hard drives...  I know absolutly nothing about them!  I was looking at the dufferent options at OWC and I dont know what I need from all the choices.  I assume you are all talking about internal drives.  How do i figure out what is going to fit in my machine?

I dont even know anything about changing them.  My OS X is installed on my internal drive, will I have to reinstall EVERYTHING on my internal drive?  All my main programs are all on there as well.

Sounds like I am in for a lot of work!

I do not have Panther yet, however I was planning on getting that as part of my upgrade.  If I get a new video card I will just stick with 10.2.8 until there is the fix for Panther.

2003 / Looking to upgrade...

Hello everyone!
I definitly can not afford a G5 now, and probably wont be able to for a loooong time.  However, I think I should be able to afford upgrading my present G4 350mhz.  I am looking to upgrade the video card and processor speed.

Here is what I currently have.
350mhz AGP graphics
ATY Rage 128 Pro video card with 16mb memory
704mb ram (which I think I may max out to 1.5gb)

Some questions...  From what I understand, some memory only works with certain processors.  If I upgrade my processor, will I have to buy all new ram.  Does my memory only work with my current 350mhz?  128mb of my memory is from the factory.  the rest I installed myself a couple years back.

Also, getting a new video card will make my computer faster, right?  For like photoshop, illustrator, quark, etc...  and the occasional game

one final question a little off this topic, but just came to me..  Should I bother getting quark for OS X?  I have the os 9 version...  Is it worth it?  Or is InDesign being used more now in the industry?  I hate having to go into classic, and Quark is the only thing that I have left in classic i need.

Woohoo!  im here!  this keyboqrd is a lot different thqn whqt i am used to so bear with me;   just wanted to say hi.  its Sat nite now and we stqrt walking tomorroz.  Right now we are in the city of Aix en Provence, France:::  BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!

2003 / Just saying goodbye...

Hey everyone!!!

I leave for my 3 month walk through Europe on Sunday so I just wanted to say "see ya!"  
This year we are walking from France, over the mountains into Spain and then into Portugal.  Some of you may remember I did this last year as well, but this year I am going as an assistant (so i get paid and go for free )  Pretty cool.  This is the most amazing thing I have ever done!

I may be passing some internet cafes along the way, so if I do, I will try to log in and say HI!  I'll be back in November.  Then I will buy my new G5

2003 / People can't send me mail!

Hi everyone!  for the past couple weeks I have been unable to get email from one of my friends.  I never thought anything of it and just told her "oh well, use the phone instead."    However, lately I can't get email from a lot of people and it is being returned to sender.  They are getting a message saying "no such address."  It doesnt make any sense to me.  Any suggestions why this may be happening?  I use Mail in OS X

Oh well, it was worth a shot!!  Guess I'll just have to get it the old fashion way by working and saving up for one...
