Tech / Weird behavior in dock folder
« on: May 10, 2012, 11:49:00 PM »
Instead of putting your "Documents" folder in the Dock, put it where it is supposed to be, i.e. in your Users folder,
and put an alias of your "Documents" folder in the Dock. May be then you'll be able to put an "unlimited" number of files
in the "Documents" folder by dragging whatever new file over the Dock "Documents" alias.

Tech / Computer audio
« on: April 28, 2012, 08:59:38 PM »
Found this is a normal behavior by design. Don't know why.
But found a workaround, an app called "Linein" which allows one to select the input to "Pass Thru" or not.
The app can be found here.

Thanks Xabd. But starting in Safe Mode did not help. Moreover the System Preferences Sound panel showed there were NO Input nor Output devices found.

iMac Intel i3 21.5" OS 10.6.8

Attachments "1- audio line in" and "2- audio line out" show my System Sound Preferences panels.

1- audio line in
[attachment=2568:1__audio_line_in1.jpg]

2- audio out
[attachment=2567:2__audio_out.jpg]

3- I connected an analog sound source to my External Speakers Amplifier's mini input, the sound is OK.

4- When I connect the same sound source to the Computer's Mic/Line mini input connector, there is no sound
coming from the computer's internal speakers, though the Input level "meter" indicates that the input is "alive".

5- The internal speakers are OK as I can play an audio file on my desktop through them.

6- When I change the sound input from "Line in" to "Internal microphone", the same thing happens, i.e. my voice
registers OK on lhe level "meter" but not in the internal speakers.

7- Am I correct to assume that my computer has a defective Mic/Line input circuit "after the input level circuit"?
8- Or is there another preference or setting somewhere that I should set?
9- Or does the Mic/Line connector not accept an analog audio source? (which would not make sense)

Tech / Safari does not open .pdf file.
« on: April 19, 2012, 01:11:34 PM »
Thanks all. I fixed my Safari problem with your various replies and links. Here is what I did.

1- I closed Safari.
2- From Library->Internet Plugins, not having a Disabled Plugins folder, I trashed the following:
   - Adobe PDF plugin
   - PDF Browser plugin
   - QT plugin
3- With Mackeeper's Smart Uninstaller I removed what was left of those plugins after I had trashed them.
4- I  reinstalled PDF Browser Plugin 2.4.4

I can now open my original pdf link with Safari. I guess the original PDF Browser Plugin must have been corrupted. I have not tried to open a QuickTime link. I suspect I will have to
also reinstall the QT plugin, although the Safari Plugin list below shows QT Plugin 7.6.6 as being installed.

Paddy, as I had written in my first message, Firefox was opening the pdf link OK. After making the above "changes" Firefox still opens the link OK.

For your info, here is the list of my Safari plugins taken from the Safari->Help->Installed Plugins:

iMac Intel i3 21.5" OS 10.6.8

With Safari 5.1.5, why is it that I get a blank black page when the page is a .pdf file?
Safari used to open .pdf file OK. I don't know why it does'nt anymore.

With Firefox 3.6.8, the .pdf file opens OK.

Is there a simple way to copy a 2 minute clip from the middle of a DVD?

Something like Audio Hijack or Piezo do with audio.

iMac Intel i3 21.5” OS 10.6.8

It used to be that when I printed a map, the name and the address of the search would be printed at the top of the page. What is it that I am not currently doing , or that I am currently doing, that prevents the name and address from being printed?

Tech / Apple Lion install problem
« on: December 08, 2011, 07:51:17 PM »
Gary,

I strongly suggest you bring your computer to the Apple Store in Madison.

I know, I know, it's a 2 to 2 1/2 hour 112 miles drive. Don't forget to bring your erased and MacOS extended reformatted USB stick so that the Apple Store can give you a copy of the Lion Installer. Bring also your App Store receipt.

Is there a way to sharpen the edges, sort of "increasing the apparent resolution" of a video?
I know how to sharpen a photo with GraphicConverter. How does one do it for a video?

Tech / Desktop Icons arrangement

iMac Intel i3 21.5" OS 10.6.8

Is there a way to keep the icons arranged or layed out a certain way on the Desktop?
Sometimes a given layout will stay as is for quite a while, for weeks sometimes.
And for some reason(s), now and then, when I power ON, all the icons find themselves bunched
together on the RH side of the screen. Is there a way to prevent this from happening so that I don't
have to relocate the icons in my prefered arrangement.

Tech / Can't start up 10.6.3 on new Macbook Pro?
« on: September 19, 2011, 07:30:59 PM »
What do you mean by "apparently"? Did you try to install 10.6 on an another volume?

As I said in another topic, before installing 10.7,

1- I had SuperDupered my 10.6 internal drive on an external drive
2- Erased my internal drive
3- Partitioned my internal drive in 2 partitions
4- SuperDupered my 10.6 from the external drive to partition 1 of my internal drive
5- Installed 10.7 on partition 2 of my internal drive

The reasons to have both 10.6 and 10.7 on the internal drive were:
1- (And foremost) was to continue using my rock solid 10.6.8 while I was learning to use 10.7.
You no doubt read my various posts on my difficulties taming the new cat.
2- This allowed a faster booting of either system than if I had had installed one system on the internal drive
and the other on an external drive.

I suggest you do similar installations of both systems on separate drive or partitions. By the way
SuperDuper works with 10.7.

I agree with you about Rosetta. The someone is probably a new software supervisor on the Lion program
who did not know about Rosetta. I doubt the architecture of Lion is so different as to prevent a Rosetta like
piece of software from being installed in 10.7. Or the software team was pressed for time and thus dropped
Rosetta for the sake of expediency. They were probably more concerned about the "Resume" part of Lion!
Well maybe one day I'll come to appreciate this "Resume" thing!

Tech / .DS_Store file
« on: September 14, 2011, 09:07:26 PM »
XABD I knew we could not stump you. Guess what. I hid the file with one of the Lion Tweaks you talked about.
The tweak is in the second column and is called "Show hidden files" Yes  No. I checked the No box and poof the DS_Store file was gone.

WOW! I now have the start of a stable Lion, for now anyway...until I start to screw it up, says he with a smile in the corner of his mouth.

Thanks everybody.
