2008 / Time Machine

The specs say hourly backups, but I assume this means every hour that the contents of the HD has changed.  Early on, out of curiosity, I checked the number of hourly backup, and they varied from a few to twelve.  For example, today there was a twelve plus hour gap from 12.53AM to 1.24PM when the computer was not being used.

I've maybe been lucky, but so far I've had no "failed" backups and have been able to find any file I looked for.  I've only needed to use a backup file once so far, but being curious I randomly check whether a change to an important file has been backed up.  So far, so good.

The wireless TM sure is handy when using a laptop as ones main computer.  smile.gif

My Time Machine had made twelve back ups on April 1st. I had to use it late that day, so luckily I can verify the number of backups.   Now it only shows one for each day before yesterday (April 2), including April 1st.

Like you, I was surprised since in preferences it says Time Machine keeps:

- Hourly backups for the past 24 hours
- Daily backups for the past month
- Weekly backups until your backup disk is full

I thought that March would have daily backups and April would have hourly backups until May arrived.  That would take a lot of disk disk though, so I guess it gives two days of hourly backups, daily backups for the previous thirty days and weekly before that until the disk is full.

xABD,
I'm using 10.5.2

My post wasn't in direct reply to yours; rather, it was a general info post.  At the end, I was trying to indicate that I seem to have received a full version, as compared to an Upgrade version, of PSE6.

I use PS CS3, but I have PSE4 installed to refer to when my daughter or Grandson call for help.  I pre-ordered the PSE6 Upgrade and received it on March 28th.  It installed without a problem; never once displaying a screen about PSE4.  I assume it searched and found PSE4 during installation.  I had to enter the PSE6 serial number.  The only strange thing is the word Upgrade is not on my PSE6 disk.  I ordered and paid for the Upgrade version.

2007 / Photo booth gone
« on: December 12, 2007, 07:45:51 PM »
I'm running Leopard 10.5.1 on a MacBook Pro, and Photo Booth seems to work fine.  I don't use it, so my only experience is opening it and taking a few snapshots to see if it works after reading your post.  I am also using Photoshop CS3 with only a few nits.

My Leopard problems would be funny if not so annoying.

1.  One such problem concerns not being able to arouse the computer from the sleep mode.  As background, Leopard was put on via a reformat and clean install of everything.  I then cloned the internal HD to an external firewire HD.  After a week or two of use, the internal HD installation suddenly would not awake from the sleep mode.  The computer was for all practical purposes dead.  I had to disconnect power and then restart the computer.  I put up with this for a day or two and then reformatted the internal HD and cloned the external HD onto the internal HD.  Copying a copy of the original back over the original solved the sleep problem.  I'll probably never know what caused the conflict.

2.  Another such problem involved the failure of the internal HD to boot.  A light blue screen appeared with the dreaded flashing question mark.  I booted using the install disk and the external HD, but the internal HD was no where to be found.  Disk Utility wouldn't recognize the internal HD.  I then booted using Restore Disk 1 that came with the computer, holding down D during boot to enter the Apple Hardware Test.  I used the extended test.  No errors or problems were reported.  I called AppleCare and the tech likewise concluded the internal HD had gone sneakers up.  A box was ordered to have the computer sent to Houston for repair.  The night before the box arrived, and, following a reboot of the external HD, the internal HD icon suddenly appeared out of nowhere.  The HD has worked fine since.  I don't trust it, but I can't send a working HD to Apple for repair!

3.  My current annoyance is the spinning beachball.  It will appear at any time and nothing can be done until it is tired of spinning and returns control of the computer.

My next step will be to reformat the internal HD again, and then either reinstall Leopard........or Tiger, depending how I feel at the moment.   Devilish2.gif

I'm getting even more excited about the two Illini games I will be attending this season! I never imagined this good of a start this year... maybe next year or the year after... Go Illini!!!!

Roy, I just noticed in your post that Dave has two favorite teams... wink.gif

Yeah..not fair is it?...I believe he got his BS from Penn State and his MS from Michigan Thinking.gif dry.gif

Roy has it right.  Except for one week each season, I have the chance to be doubly happy/proud every week. smile.gif  I never consider the possibility of being doubly unhappy.  whistling.gif

Having graduated from both Penn State (BS) and Michigan (MS), the result of yesterday's game was bitter sweet.  I must admit more bitter than sweet, as a Pennsylvania-born will always root for Penn State.  Any other week, I get to root for two great teams in a great conference. smile.gif
