Community / A Question of Semantics?
« on: July 14, 2010, 09:37:36 AM »
Today, my "rucksack" arrived, and, I must say, is really quite like a "sack" (albeit an attractive, ultra-durable one), and the first thing that one notices is the absence of a zippered main enclosure: there is a drawstring that can be cinched tightly with a large flap that covers that which has been cinched. Relative to a backpack, which usually zips at the top and is a sort of rectangular solid, the rucksack (at least in LL Bean's version) is more of a cylindrical solid. And, of course, there is the usual array of pockets, both inside the enclosure and out. cool.gif

"...years ago I spent 2 days in South Carolina visiting friends and went home to Chicago with an accent that drove my grandma nuts." ... As a South Carolinian, I must say that it's y'all that have the accent! happy.gif

Tech / Consumer Reports won't recommend iPhone 4

I read somewhere that to remedy the problem, one simply adds the "bumper" to the phone (granted, it's a $29 added expense, but a temporary fix until Apple corrects the problem).

Tech / My odd question: How do you set up the OS to be consistent?
« on: July 12, 2010, 07:06:44 PM »
While I have nothing germane to contribute to the original question posed, I do have an observation on the example stated. Not all zen Buddhists use koans. In Japanese zen there are the "two schools", Rinzai and Soto; I was formally initiated into Soto zen 20 years ago ("Sokukodo" is my Buddhist name); Soto was founded by Dogen (13th century) who advocated "slow" enlightenment via zazen ("just sitting"); Rinzai is the branch that advocates "quick" enlightenment via koans. They are simply two paths leading to the same place (in fact, Dogen stated that the act of sitting, the practice of zazen, is enlightenment itself).

Tech / Photo Booth ...

I'm running 10.6.4 ... this isn't an issue that would necessitate a total re-installation of the operating system. I can live w/out Photo Booth.

Ok ... tried the desktop plist thing ... nothing. Same problem. Trashed the plist .. nothing. Same problem. "Version 3.0.2 (119)"
Well, not a big deal, as I seldom use it; now, it is the principle. It should work.

I rarely use photo booth, but I just picked up a new pair of glasses and wanted to take a quick picture to share with my kids. For some reason, although the picture will snap, and I can see what's been taken, there is no thumbnail version at the bottom from which to save or edit the picture. There is no option anywhere to "open with" or "save to" ...  wallbash.gif

Yes, I had thought that the terms were interchangeable until I saw L.L. Beans's catalogue ... Krissel, I've always associated "rucksack" with "old" military (WWI, for instance), and seemed to have a faint English/German connotation ... having said all this, I bought a rucksack (it's on its way now): http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/49400?paren...tn&cat4=816 ... been looking for a decent "backpack" for my daily walks (love my hickory walking stick).

I had always assumed the "rucksack" & "backpack" were two words for the same thing. But is there a difference? Browsing the LL Bean catalogue reveals separate categories, merchandise separated, "Backpacks" over here, "Rucksacks" over there. I'm confused.  unsure.gif

Safari 5 doesn't support streaming on "instant-watch" movies on Netflix, so it's Firefox for that ...

It worked! (I went to the wrong place ... to password change, rather than the Firmware Utility) ... Thank you ever so much, Tacit. What a relief!

That didn't work ... changed password ... back to where I started ... still go through the same drill ... can't boot into anything without going to the option key and entering the NEW password ... all I want to do is to be able to press "C" and boot into Disk Warrior or press "Command-S" and get to Single User" option to run Applejack.
