Here's our Picasa site with a bunch of wedding photos. We don't have the professional ones yet, but when we do, those will go there as well. Lot's of cool stuff to look at smile.gif

2008 / Saturday's outage

I'm pretty sure gzip is used to compress image files (maybe other types of files as well) before they are sent to the user's web browser. This increases the loading speed of the site. I imagine the /tmp directory is used to store the gzipped images while the person is browsing the site. Once the person leaves, it should auto-clean the directory of those compressed images. Alternatively, there should be a batch job that will run nightly (maybe more frequently for a heavily used site) to clear the folder in case of hanging files.

Hey guess what, we are getting more storms and rain here in Madison. Just what we needed!

Today we drove downtown, and the two lakes are almost breeching the cost line of which they are normally about 6-8 feet below. It's indeed very wild.

My now Fiancé got me good last year.

I was sitting at my apartment on Instant Messenger with her; my parents were watching some TV (they were in town for some reason which I cannot remember now). After talking back and forth for a while, she sends me a message: "Are your parents nearby?"
I respond with "No, they are on the couch."
She says "Good, I have something I need to tell you."
After a bit of a pause, so I could wonder what she was going to say, the next message comes in: "I'm pregnant!"
Of course, a million things went through my mind for the next few seconds. Luckily, she wasn't too evil, and quickly added "April Fools!!!"

We still laugh really hard at that one smile.gif

2008 / Memory use

Or even better than using the go menu, use Spotlight! Just hit command+space to bring up the spot light window. Type in part or all of "Activity monitor" and hit return to open the application. I have really started using that a lot since Leopard, since it's a handy way to launch apps without remember where they are.

Thanks all! I hadn't seen this message before. It was one of my better birthdays indeed, as it was my first one as an engaged man smile.gif.

Plus, I got guitar hero 3, which just like the other guitar heroes, is a ton of fun!

BTW, if anyone wants to check out our wedding website that I created, you can head over here: http://www.mikeandaliciawedding.com

The position/settings of windows in the Finder is a crap shoot at best. However, I can solve one of your issues. To keep arranged, you can to open the View Options, then click the checkbox next to Keep Arranged. Then you can select what you want to arrange by. Also in the view options is the ability to set this to all windows, or just the current window.

I'm engaged!!!

This weekend Alicia and I had a weekend alone at the cabin. friday night we had a candlelight dinner, gazed at the stars, and watched the fire burn into the night. The next morning, I took here out for a walk in the woods behind the cabin. On the way back, I stopped her, got on one knee, and popped the question. She was so happy, she started crying and couldn't say anything, so just nodded emphatically. biggrin.gif

I'm so so excited now. The big day will be some time next fall, but we have to get all those details worked out. I'll try to post some nice pics sometime this week.

Almost time for the Badgers to beat up on Illinois smile.gif

I haven't been around much lately (new girlfriend) but I have definitely been paying attention to what's going on.

Go Big Ten!

2007 / Mac App Alleged to be Malware
« on: February 24, 2007, 10:09:35 AM »
Mis-typing a code and entering a pirated code are two very different things.

As I said, I don't condone messing up the user's computer in any way, but this really isn't malware.

Um, I don't think you guys read the article in as detail as it deserves. The software only deletes your home directory if you use a pirated registration code. Now, I don't in any way condone doing something so drastic, but it will certainly keep his software from being pirated.

I don't really consider this malware, but just an over-zealous way of protecting his work.

2007 / OT: Big Ten Basketball (This Week)
« on: February 03, 2007, 06:19:35 PM »
The game coming up in 3 weeks is going to be a big one! Luckily, I was just at OSU recruiting students, and I put a hex on the basketball team wink.gif

I would have tried to find you, but I just didn't have time to do so. Got in 4:00 thurs, drove to the Blackwell and checked in, got dinner, and gave a presentation. Then, I had to get up early the next day to give 8 hours of interviews before driving to the airport at  4:30. Busy couple of days!

Bad bad bad. I knew it had to come. Better now than in the tournament I guess. Now the path is clear for another long winning streak that completes with the championship smile.gif

2007 / What do you like most about your Mac?
« on: January 29, 2007, 07:25:45 AM »
It's all the little things that really add up. Some examples:

- Having an easy keyboard shortcut to create folders (On windows, it's: Alt-N, release alt, hit N, hit F)

- Having the menu bar always at the top. The edges of the screen are the easiest to get to with a mouse, so it's always easy to get to the menu bar

- A search feature that is fast (Don't get me started on searching folders in XP)

- Menu item shortcuts that appear at the right side of the menu, instead of hard to read letter underlines

That's just a few of the little windows annoyances that I deal with daily at work. Add them up, and you get the reason for OS X being as good as it is.

I stumbled across this software today which claims to sync Entourage data to the iPod: http://www.zapptek.com/ipda/
