Tech / Upgrade an old Titanium
« on: August 07, 2011, 04:07:46 PM »
Thanks, ABD.

I have a set of discs I used before that are grey but aren't necessarily machine-specific.

I know they work on other machines because I used to use it on my old Blue & White G3.......

I just couldn't remember if there were any caveats to the archive and install. From what I remembered, it just backed up the copy of the previous system folder and then created a fresh new one with the rest of the info remaining intact.

I just didn't want it to bust any functionality of any of the apps he has on the machine.....

Take care!

Chris

My apologies in advance, but I just don't mess with Macs too often at all anymore.

I've got a client who has an old Titanium PowerBook with OS X.2.8 and I've got a copy of 10.3 that I don't use and would at least like to get him to that.

Are there any land mines doing an archive and install from 10.2.8 to 10.3 that I'm not remembering......?

Thanks in advance and if there are any TSers still around from the old days, well, HEY!

Who's owns the file you're trying to write to?
What group permissions does the file have?

Maybe I missed whether you said that or not.....

Despite not really showing up much at all any more, I do wish everyone here a great 10th anniversary.

You've all always been quite a great group of people to work with and it's been my pleasure to get to "know" many of you as RHP said. A lot of fond memories working with you so many of you.

Great job, TS!

(And thanks, Dick!).

Have a great evening, all.

cdub1988, getting the man pages is just the start! I usually end up getting lost looking up the terms used in the original page and follow page after page as new terms come up, and I forget what I was trying to figure out in the first place! blush-anim-cl.gif laugh.gif

Heh.

Yeah, the man pages have lots of references, but I find it's a GREAT resource.

Take care, ABD. Err, xABD. biggrin.gif

K-

If you want the man pages about those kind of things, open Terminal and type "man process_name".

In this case man syslogd.

It will give you the details right from the source.

man syslogd

2008 / move camino bookmarks to opera
« on: August 20, 2008, 07:56:06 PM »
I'm guessing the OS X build of Opera is nearly the same as the Linux build, so.....

1. Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks
2. File > Import and Export > Import Netscape/Firefox bookmarks
3. Point to the directory with your camino bookmarks.html file (probably ~/.camino/default/profile_name/bookmarks.html....or some path to that effect - you can search for bookmarks.html and probably find the path easier).
4. Click open.

Voila.

Hope that helps.

Honestly, I haven't done any troubleshooting on a mac in so long I'm feeling a bit like Mater from the movie Cars.....but, thanks for the suggestion.
Good to uh, see you again. biggrin.gif

Kris-
I was hoping to not have to do that, but whatever I need to get her up and running.
She's got a new Toshiba lappy that should make it to her by Friday, so I suspect I'll be setting that up before I mess with the mini anyway. I kind of figure I'll probably be spending time with the new one this weekend, so the earliest I'll be able to look at the mini is next weekend.

Thanks so much for the suggestions.

Take care,

Chris

2008 / Blue Screen
« on: August 11, 2008, 09:30:52 PM »
Mac Mini running Tiger......

Have had no problems with this machine until now. It's my mother's who knows virtually very little and doesn't even use it often as she has an iBook, but it's there for her when she needs it.

Anyway, she had problems with it not wanting to finish the boot process.

I can restart the machine, zap the pram, unplugged all but the necessary USB periphs, but it still continues to do the same thing - it will paint the background of the desktop with the typical blue color and then I get the spinner (the grey one with the lines...) and then it's as if the system is caught in an endless loop.

It's crazy. The screen jumps like it's trying to reload the window manager and then goes back to try and chomp at the blue background.

Ideas/suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks, all.

Later.

2008 / Another browser.....
« on: May 24, 2008, 07:17:51 PM »
Not sure if you've discussed this one here, but I cam across it as I had a little flake out of FF on my bank site and used the linux Netscape build.

Just thought I'd pass it on.

I think my issue with FF was actually related to an upgraded mplayer plugin, but haven't confirmed it yet.

However, I've been using this browser a bit now and it runs really well as far as resposiveness on Linux. Actually seems more responsive than FF, though it's built on the FF core.

Anyway, just another one to throw into the mix......Flock.

Take care, all.

Chris
