2008 / FruitMenu and Application Enhancer...

Paddy, it wasn't the latest beta- but now things are so smooth I'm not to keen to upgrade. Maybe I'll look at MaxMenu. By the way, Chuckwagon was already taken by my ISP (4 ISPs ago) so I've stuck with Chuckwagen!

Hmmm... Me thinks I will hold off for now. Me has better things to do than fool around with a major OS upgrade...

Was your first attempt a basic upgrade or did you do an Archive and Install?

I did do an archive and install, and performance was flaky in 10.5 and 10.5.1, and totally useless in 10.5.2. I still had Applecare and they suggested I stay at 10.5.1, which I thought was ridiculous. I Googled "leopard upgrade finder crash iMac G5" and found a post where the user did a clean install and migration from a backup disc. I had a solid 10.4.11 backup and this worked. I do have the APE pref pane disabled as the Leopard Insanity haxies brought back the finder crash. When the finder loads, no apps or discs appear on the desktop- although you can launch apps from the dock. My daughter had no issues at all upgrading on her MacBook that had shipped with Tiger, but that's an Intel processor.

My upgrade to Leopard was a disaster with lots of finder crashes. I finally did an erase and install, and used Migration Assistant on my 10.4.11 backup successfully. After installing the 10.5 compatible FruitMenu (on 10.5.2) I got more finder crashes. I have a Rev.1 G5 iMac. In my experience Leopard has a tough time with some pref panes. As much as I liked FruitMenu and Windowshade, I'll take Leopard for now. I hope you have more success with the haxies than I did.

2006 / MacHome magazine?
« on: July 18, 2006, 10:56:13 AM »
It is too bad. I got the free subscription when I bought my Performa in '97, and have kept it current since then. I know that their circulation was over 100,000 in 1999-2000 because I heard an editor interviewed on MacShow Live. I sure hope Chris McVeigh and Marcus Rovvito will keep writing- their articles are always enjoyable (and informative).

Maybe a bad RAM chip? I agree with the OS9 upgrade suggestion, too..

2003 / Recommendations for a USB hub?
« on: December 18, 2003, 03:13:09 PM »
I got a Griffin USB hub as I happy with the iMic. It's been a little flaky with my K-Mouse and Zip 250- lots of plugging and unplugging. Tech support was nasty.  It replaced a Keyspan (3 yrs old). I'd go with a Keyspan

Do you think it's worth $120?
Not much bang for the buck. I agree about the slow install. Somehow I lost IE 5.2.3...

I got Norton Systemworks 3.0. The CD is OS X bootable and everything's worked well. I had trouble installing it and held my breath after emailing for support. They got back to me in 3 days (as promised) and now everything works. You  get a $50 discount if you give a serial number from a registered Symantec product. I used my Norton Utilities 3 serial number, so they're pretty liberal with upgrades...

What advantages does Carbon Copy Cloner have over Retrospect's Duplicate option? (besides the price!)

2003 / Verizon Problem-but I'm the root...
« on: August 05, 2003, 07:18:19 AM »
I'd never used any OSX mail apps until I got a digicam, as I never had a use for iPhoto. The email option on iPhoto asks for an OSX eMail app, so I tried Mail And Eudora. And Gyaz. None would send the attachment. Text messages, no attachments. I found this link for a fix and everything works- until a restart, when it defaults back. I want to log on as root to do the permanent fix, but when I give my password, I get "Sorry". I can't complete the edit as I apparently don't have permission. This happens on both computers, and I'm the only user- I'm sure I have the right password. Huh?OSX hints

Rob, what kind of wireless plan do you have? I have a 4 phone family plan, local, long distance, DSL, and no one's giving us a break here. I am happy with the DSL service, though. How about those Flyers?

I like Fruitmenu, but Limewire gets slower with each upgrade. I like Xnap for "filesharing". rolleyes.gif

I saw that before I went to work. Good to see Andy Ihnatko getting some sun. That was a great move scheduling a Mac cruise with Trekkies! I can accept being labeled a nerd for being a Mac Addict. But compared to Trekkies, I'm Johnny Depp!! B)

Oh man... after 2 weekends of reinstalling OSX, 9, troubleshooting RAM, biting fingernails... I've removed the Harmoni 600 mHZ upgrade and everything works...including Norton! I'm going to take a loss on a restocking fee with Small Dog, and maybe get a digital camera. There are still a few ants around... biggrin.gif

All of the icons in the HD and several in the Apps folder are now invisible. The HD can't be repaired with Disk Utility or -urgh- Disk Warrior. According to some other forums I should have repaired permissions after installing. I also should RTFM, as we used to say on submarines.... doh.gif
