Thanks, XABD.  For the moment, I think I can limp along with the problem for a few days.  I'm up against a deadline for a project I'm working on and I don't want to do anything that might make things worse.

I'll check back with TS when I have the time to try to fix things.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Just thinking ahead (since I'm still not at home), if I do find a preferences folder in Cubase, is it okay to drag it to the Trash?  Will Cubase create a new one when I re-launch Cubase?

I apologize for asking these Cubase-specific questions, but I'm thinking that applications written for Mac probably have similarly structured components.  I should post on a Cubase forum as well, but I thought I'd start with you guys since you've been so helpful to me for many years (even though I haven't posted here for a long time).

Paddy, I don't know if it uses an installer.

If I were to do a reinstall, wouldn't all the components of the program simply overwrite the existing ones wherever they were located?  Or is there something about the way a program reinstalls over an existing program that I'm missing?

I'm pretty rusty on solving problems on Macs, but I do seem to remember that getting rid of the preferences file is often a solution.  Is that something I should try?  Maybe I should look for the Cubase preferences file and get rid of it.  (I'm not at home right now so I can't check.)  If I do that, will the program create a new preferences file when I first run it?

I have a Power PC 9600, 350 MHz that I've been running an old version of Cubase on since 1997.  Cubase is a music sequencing program that allows you to record and edit music using MIDI.  The Mac OS is 7.6.1.

The Playback function has apparently become corrupted because during playback, the sound will suddenly stop, but the on-screen depiction of playback with a moving pointer continues.  Once I click the Stop button and restart Playback, everything is fine.  But then before long, the sound cuts out again.

I've always heard that if a program gets corrupted, reinstalling it often solves the problem.  I have never reinstalled this program, so I'm sure it's gathered a lot of cobwebs since it was installed in 1997.  And I have never updated it, so the version I have on my computer is exactly the version I have on the discs that came in the Cubase box (which I still have, of course).

If I do reinstall the program, do I need to uninstall it first?  (I don't know how to uninstall on this computer, but I assume it's not difficult.)

And is reinstalling the best way to solve this problem?

Thanks.

2003 / Bernie! ((RAIN))
« on: November 16, 2003, 03:10:00 AM »
June, I too love the rain.  And like you in Hemet, we just don't get enough of it in L.A. to suit me.  I think I would prefer to live someplace like Seattle.

We got a little here last night and today here in the San Fernando Valley and I believe there's a small chance of more tomorrow and into Monday.

What I hate is when you hear a forecast of rain a couple of days ahead, and then the day before it gets here, they say the weather pattern has changed and we're not getting it after all.   mad.gif  That tends to happen a lot here in Southern California.

Hope your people have a good cruise.   smile.gif

Bill, that was an amazing storm, but as you probably know, it was isolated to just a small area.

In the paper today it showed a neighborhood in Watts near South Central L.A. that had a foot of hail.  The cars there were frozen in place and people couldn't even open the doors.  The traffic reporters in their helicopters said it looked like a magical Christmas village.

Then the rain you mentioned was some of the worst ever seen in L.A.  More than 5 inches fell in a few places in that 24-hour period.  As many as 50 cars were abandoned in the floodwaters.  One lady said she was driving home from work and a school bus came floating by.  Somehow she was able to get home okay.

As you can imagine, lots of people in those areas were flooded out of their homes and had to go to evacuation centers, where they had plenty of company from victims of the fires from 2 weeks ago.

Just another one of Southern California's four seasons:  fire, flood, earthquake, riot.

I was hoping the storm would let me skip watering my yard this week, but not a drop fell in my area.  I had to water it this morning.  Then again, I'm thankful not to have been flooded out.

Hey, Bern, I've been wondering about you, too.  Just like George, you introduced me to TS--you found me over on MacFixIt and invited me over.

You and I discussed ailments a bit back then.  I'm sorry to hear yours is flaring up.

Hey folks, did you know Bernie's a former trumpet player?

I wouldn't be surprised if you got a some smoke and even ash in your area when the Santa Anas were blowing it all towards the ocean a few days ago.

Early in the week, the Simi Valley fire was advancing toward my neighborhood and I was getting pretty nervous.  Parts of Chatsworth were evacuated and I'm just four miles from there.  Fortunately, the winds reversed the next day and that fire went the other way.  sweatingbullets.gif

It's good to hear from you, Bern.  Hope things look up soon.

2003 / Who's on First? Audio
« on: October 18, 2003, 03:25:26 AM »
Hi Fiona,

I just emailed it to several people myself.  It's real easy.

First, click on Gary's "Who's On First" link, which opens the Web page with the audio.  Then copy the Web address from the top of the page.

Then you paste that Web address into your email.  The recipient will click on that Web address and will be taken to the Web page where the audio will load and play.

I didn't really place the bet. I was joking.   wink.gif

I gotta tell you, Gary, I am so relieved to hear you say that.  whew.gif   I was feeling real bad for you.  It didn't seem odd to me since I knew that other guy that had done it.

I love the Abbott & Costello audio.  Those guys were the greatest.  smile.gif

Hey, folks, you gotta try this.  It's a good way to drown your tears in laughter.

I was just looking around the Web for baseball stuff and ran across a jokes & humor thing.  One of the pages there was a word-for-word transcript of Abbott & Costello's "Who's On First?"

Most of us have probably seen and heard it several times, and as you know, it never gets old.  It always puts you on the floor.  Well, here's a new way to try it.  Read it out loud.  I just tried it and could not get through it.

Here's the link.  Results guaranteed.  smile.gif

Well, our final hope for a storybook World Series got squashed.  We all got two stiff doses of reality this year.  It's eerie how both deciding games were so similar.

As much as I dislike the Yankees, they most always find a way to win the big games.  True, they can buy just about anyone they want, but I still give them credit for coming through when it counts.

There's one guy on their team who always seems to do well when I see him play.  I never hear him mentioned much, but I've seen him get clutch hits in many big spots:  Jorge Posada.  I don't know much about him except that he hits well when I'm watching.

It's hard to get excited about watching the World Series, but I would like to see the Yanks get their butts kicked.  So about all I can say is, Go Marlins, even though they beat the Cubs.  They really made the most of their season.

Hey Gary, it's even more disappointing that the Cubs didn't win when you mentioned your bet!  Wow, what a payday that would have been.  Back in the late '80s when the Twins won the World Series, there was a lawyer at my firm who had put a bet on them before the season.  I think the odds were something like 35 to 1.  He wagered something like $1,000, so he made about $35,000.  But your odds top them all.  Sorry you didn't make it.

Man, Gary, that's a tough series.

Since I work at night, I couldn't follow the last two games closely, but took a look every once in a while at the Webcast at espn.com.

I taped both games, so when I got home last night, I took a look at the fan and the foul ball footage.  I still haven't quite decided what I think about it.  It was one of the most unfortunate plays I've ever seen.

The fact is, when a ball is hit, everyone looks at the ball, so that's what they were doing.  Sure, if they had really been alert, they should have glanced at the players to see if anyone was coming over to try for it.  If a foul ball is coming down in the first row, the fans should always allow for the chance that a player might be there to catch it.  But even the players themselves sometimes collide, and they're on the same level.  If those seats had been at ground level, I bet the fans would have leaned back to let Moises catch it.  But being up higher like they were, it looked like they didn't even know he was there.  What a sad moment.  And talk about a turning point.  Man.  And I do feel sorry for that kid.  He may have to move to Florida.

On the other hand, you have to give the Marlins credit for playing great baseball.  They just kept coming back in so many games and wouldn't give up.  They're a gutsy team and I admire the way they played.  They took advantage of things when they needed to.  A great team.  But it took a little luck, too (it usually does).

I think many, many people across the country were behind the Cubs.  It looks like the team is stronger than it's been in a long time.  Let's hope they'll be contenders for a few years now.

But it still hurts.   verysad.gif

Hey Mrious, baseball and love go together real nice.  Good luck on getting to Boston soon!!

On my way to work (I work on Sunday), I heard the first inning and Beckett set the Cubs down in order.  Quite a change from the first inning in the other games.  Hmmm, I thought to myself, this guy sounds pretty good today.  I didn't get a chance to check on the game until it was over.  Wow, a 2-hitter.

Can't win 'em all.  But 3-2 still looks good.  And they're back at Wrigley on Tuesday.

Mrious_be, what kind of U.S. baseball coverage do you get in Belgium?  Is baseball a big sport there?

I'd love to see a Cubs-Red Sox World Series.  The two oldest parks in the majors (I think).  I'll never forget when the Dodgers traded Pedro Martinez away.  He and his brother Ramon were both Dodger pitchers at the time.  I always felt Pedro had more potential than Ramon.  Pedro was very "raw" at the time, but he had exciting stuff even then.

Mike, I can't stand the Yankees either.  They've got a lot of great talent and I respect their ability, but I always feel like they can just buy whatever they want.  It's a turn-off.  I haven't followed the Marlins much this year, except when they were fighting it out for the wild-card with the Dodgers and others.  All I remember is that the Marlins seemed to keep winning and the Dodgers could never gain any ground.  Pudge Martinez has been a one-man wrecking crew lately for the Marlins.  What a player.

Gary, I'm not familiar with the Berkeley-Hillside area, but I was so young when we were in Des Plaines that I wasn't aware of surrounding towns.  The main other town I can remember is Park Ridge.  Let's beat those Marlins again today!
