2003 / Good bye
« on: October 11, 2003, 05:15:56 AM »
I want to let all TS'ers know that I'm not going to be monitoring this board daily anymore, but it was really nice discussing and posting with you guys.

But it's time I left to pursue more defined interest.  TS is too general and OT for me, and monitoring it daily has taken up the little time I have for surfing.  However, although I've enjoyed many of Kelly's et al links, I want to spend more time with, and get deeper, into cocoa programming and Panther OSes only.

Bye guys... I'll drop in from time to time and say hello.

2003 / "After 'CCC'!!" --strange results...
« on: October 10, 2003, 04:29:41 PM »
QUOTE
I would love to know why, assuming that they're usually invisible and I don't see them on my original drive??

Because these files are made invisible with the UNIX dot method. (For example ( .myfile.txt )  However, they are only invisible on the active system.  That's because it's actually the UNIX system that makes them invisible on the fly.

PS:  Bootable systems on firewire drives, especially older drives, are hit and miss.  Strange things do happen.   tongue.gif

2003 / Connecting a Mac and a PC
« on: October 09, 2003, 04:59:51 AM »
Tonye:

I would asume it's pretty ease using the ethernet connection.  Just directly the mac to pc with an ethernet cable (RJ45), and enable file sharing on both machines.  Easch will sense the other as a server.  You should be able to transfer file back and forth quickly and easily.

The firewire is a another story.  You can connect them using a firewire cable, but I'm not sure how the pc will react to firewire disk mode.  Try booting the mac in firewire mode and hoping it senses the pc as a disk and then just drag and drop files.  The mac file can't be read by the pc but you should be able to drag and drop them, but I'm not sure if the pc file system will even recognise them.  The pc files will be recognised on the mac, but you can't run exe files, just open docs.  Anyway the firewire transfering method would be very slow in contrast to the ethernet way.

Hope this helps

2003 / Internal CD,Zip and floppy stopped working?
« on: October 04, 2003, 11:34:03 PM »
Bill:

I had that happen to me twice in the past.  One time it was in hardware. The SCSI cable came loose and wasn't terminating properly.  It affected both the ZIP and CD drives not allowing them to read the disk and mount, but the drive mechanisms worked fine.  This was on an older OS 9 machine.

The other time it happened on my G4 using an early version of OS X, but this was not ATA hardware related.  The ZIP worked fine, but the CD couldn't read the disk or mount its icon.  Just kept silently spinning.  It turned out to be a corrupted driver.  I couldn't say which, because I just replaced every Apple system file preference that had to do with the CD.  Rebooted and the CD came to life again.

Hope this helps...   smile.gif

2003 / Internet access hangs often at Internet Zone

I don't know but this happens to me often when using Safari at many different website.  Inernet Explorer doesn't seem to hang at these same sites.

Maybe it's a rendering problem or a security authentication one   Thinking.gif

I try real hard not to have games on my mac... I would never get anything done!  However, I did get a addictive kick out of those free games that dot mac gave me.  Marble Blaster is cool   tongue.gif

Better than going bald or thinking things need repairing, enable and log on as the root user, then do your CCC thing.  Sometimes even the admin group permissions can not overide things that are owned by the system.  Only the root user can. smile.gif

PlusOptimizer is compatable only with OS 9 (Alsoft says they are working on a future OS X version). However, Alsoft assures me that PlusOptimizer will work fine defraging OS X disk from OS 9.  30% is server fragmentation in Norton speak, but I hate Norton.  Anyway I would definately boot into OS 9 (if you have it on a different partition) or boot from the CD and Optimize.   biggrin.gif

Buy the book.  It's only $19.95 (US) and you'll get the benefit of finding out many many ways to rule your Mac.  Honestly the best way to learn these things is to read this book.  But, this book isn't like other computer books.  It is a book of just tips on how to do things you thought you couldn't in Jaguar, and it's laid out in just short individual clips, you won't have to read paragraph after paragraph.   tongue.gif
