2007 / Time changes on MacBook Pro
« on: June 18, 2007, 02:36:18 PM »
I am indeed using boot camp to run both systems on the computer. However, I have been doing this for several months now and it only started happening a few days ago.

2007 / Time changes on MacBook Pro

I know this was the answer in the era before X; don't know if it applies to this case. Plus, here it is a bit different because the time offset is always the same; +3 hrs. Anyway, how can I find out what the deal is with the PRAM battery. Also, I am using this machine as a dual system (PC at work, Mac at home) and I don't get the same problem on the PC (WinXP) side.

2007 / Time changes on MacBook Pro

Lately I have noticed that when I turn on my computer (intel core 2 duo, running 10.4.8) the time (sometimes, not always) is exactly 3 hrs ahead. When I open the relevant preference panel, it sometimes (though I haven't noticed what triggers it) changes back to the right time. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance;)

2007 / Finder / Trash questions
« on: January 19, 2007, 05:01:58 PM »
Boy, that was a trip down Memory lane... It seems like all this happened in another lifetime but it was less than 20 years ago.

Gregg, wouldn't dashboard widgets be sort of like accessories? btw, Windows Vista has "gadgets"... If there was ever a cheap knock-off of something this has got to be it!

2007 / Finder / Trash questions

I think at some point back when the big thing was the transition from System 6 to System 7 there was something called the MultiFinder. I still have a Mac Plus from 1984 or 1985 running System 3 or 4 or something like that. I think I'll fire it up just for the heck of it, see what it does and check how the Finder was back then. btw, thanks for the solution and the welcome!

Relaunched Finder... problem solved. Now feeling like a dork. (I've only been using a Mac since 1985 though, and it IS a steep learning curve...)

2007 / Finder / Trash questions
« on: January 16, 2007, 10:45:56 AM »
Hi everyone,

It's been a very long time since I have been here, but I have ran into a couple of issues with my mac, and I remember that this is the place to get answers, so...

1. When I choose to save something on the desktop (either a file through Save As... or a dowloaded item through right clicking on it for example) it doesn't show. It's there though, because when I press com-F to do a search and key in its name, not only it finds it on the desktop but it appears on the desktop itself then.

2. Sometimes, I choose empty trash from the dock (tried secure empty from Finder too) and even though I hear the emptying noise, the trash remains full. Then I open it and when I click on the item it disappears and the trash can is finally empty.

What is going on? Are these things related maybe? I am running 10.4.8 on a MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo). Any ideas please? These are no big deal really, but they annoy me.

2004 / Recommendations for used PB purchase?
« on: February 06, 2004, 04:36:25 AM »
As a Wall Street and Pismo owner for quite a while now, I can recommend either with all my heart. Truly great machines... now, you can get them cheap too.

2003 / Homepod
« on: December 17, 2003, 07:07:41 AM »
If you like it, you should also take a look at SlimDevices.  They have something like the HomePod, only theirs is actually in the market. I think the call it the SqueezeBox or something like that.

Anyway, I was looking at these too. They look like a cool idea, but I was thinking, what can I do with this gizmo that I can't do with my iPod? I can connect it to my home stereo or home theater and listen to my tunes anyway. Another cool idea is the Networked DVD player from GoVideo (model is D2730). It is WiFi enabled (or wired ethernet if you like) and you can stream music, video and photos from the computer to the TV / Home Theater.
The only question is whether it is mac compatible... maybe through Virtual PC... Not a shabby DVD player either (progressive scan etc)

2003 / I'm thinking about buying a Digital Camera....
« on: November 03, 2003, 07:15:04 AM »
DPreview is one great site for Digital Photography, with many reviews, chat fora etc.

I wouldn't discard Sony from the start. As you will see on the site (or any other site for that matter) some of their stuff is excellent (717, 828 to name a couple). They use Carl Zeiss lenses on their top line; that alone is a definite plus as CZ is considered by most experts to be the leading manufacturer of quality lenses, even higher than Leitz (Leica optics).

In any case, with so many options out there, be sure to handle the camera before you buy it, to see if it fits your hands well. Features are nice but they should not be the sole deciding factor.

And a last note... If you know what size prints you will be doing (that is, if you print at all) you may be able to get away with a lower megapixel camera and save a few bucks. You do not need a 5 or 6 megapixel camera to print wallet size photos.

2003 / Forex Trading on Mac OS X?
« on: November 01, 2003, 08:22:36 AM »
I am trying to get into forex trading online. There are several companies that do that and the way it works is that you download their application and you put you trades through them. Refco is one of them (maybe the largest one) but their application is Windows only... MGForex is another one that is supposedly Mac compatible, but the way they do it is through a java applet, which is not the best thing out there I guess (user interface, speed, crashes Safari etc).

So, I have two questions:

Does anyone know of an online forex trading firm, whose application is Mac OS X compatible?

If I decide to go with a Windows application, running it off of Virtual PC, would the fact that I am using Airport over an ISDN connection pose a problem when trying to connect through Virtual PC?

Thanks smile.gif

2003 / HD window view preferences not "sticky"...
« on: October 26, 2003, 01:12:17 PM »
The "Open new windows in Column view" was checked and still is. Problem is, it doesn't seem to work on the HD window for some reason. Any ideas on which DS_Store file to delete?

2003 / HD window view preferences not "sticky"...
« on: October 26, 2003, 01:57:29 AM »
I know it's not a major thing and it's probably an easy fix too, but here ti goes:
When I double-click on the Hard Disk icon on my desktop (I am running 10.2.8) I want to see the window in full size and in column view. Usually, when you set these preferences, they are valid until the next time you re-set them to a different setting (eg. small window and icon or list view). That's what I used to get too and all was well until a couple of days ago. Now when I double click the HD icon, the window that opens is small and in icon view. When I resize it and change the view, it keeps my settings until the next time I reboot, when it reverts to that small window / icon view. In Finder Preferences the "Open new windows in column view" option has been and still is checked.

Someone told me that these kinds of prefs are stored in files called .DS_Store and that I could fix the problem by deleting the relevant file. TinkerTool allows this, but a search I did revealed 202 .DS_Store files, so I have no clue which one to delete. Also, I am not sure whether this will solve the problem and most importantly if it is indeed safe to delete the file, assuming I find the right one.

So, I guess my silly question is how to fix this nuisance of a problem?
