2004 / Mac Extensions Vs PC Extensions
« on: February 03, 2004, 06:32:47 AM »
Hello all you lovely people.

I find myself in the predicament of having to use a PC at work suddenly  sad.gif  but am having problems, surprise, surprise (why can't everyone just use Macs?). Can anyone tell me the PC equivalent of starting up with the extensions off (holding down shift on start-up)?

If anybody can answer my little question you'll make my day!

Oh God...  sad.gif

That must be the problem, you're a genius Paddy. What a pain, guess I need to use the original.

Still doesn't explain the problems with my CD Drive though. I can never use it as the startup disk. Might have to take it in to get the tray looked at.

Thank you all SO much for your help  biggrin.gif

My HD is extended, so that's good, and the CD drive ID is 0 which is good too.

The disk I have is a copy from a reputable source... It's generic so should work on most Macs.

I'm now going to read all the Mac OS X stuff from the links and try again, wish me luck and thanks once again, I'll keep you posted.

My computer is not going to get the better of me!

Thanks for all your help  smile.gif

It's running 192 MB RAM with a PowerPC G3 Processor, 466MHz. I haven't got a clue about the Formatting, how would I find out? It's definitely an install CD, not an update. And I've got over 7 gigs free on the HD. The disk drive has been cleaned, I think it's this that's the problem because when I go to the startup disk control panel I can't select the CD if it's in my computer, I can if it's in the Firewire drive. It's a bit odd isn't it?Is there any way of telling my iBook that I want the external CD drive to be the default one? I've recently done a completely clean install of OS 9 in the hope it would resolve this but it hasn't.
Thanks for all your help, I think I'm slowly going mad...  wallbash.gif

Hello lovely people,

I'm trying to install OSX onto my iBook (funny shaped one) and not having much luck sad.gif . I'm running OS9.2.2, updated the Firmwire, my CD drive is a bit dodgy though. I click on install and the window comes up to restart so it can start installing but then an error message appears saying 'Startup disk was unable to select the install CD as the startup disk (-2)'. Have I got a faulty CD drive? The CD shows up on the desktop ok. When I select the OSX Disk to start up from it doesn't, just automatically opens from Mac HD. I've plugged in an external Firewire CD drive and can start up from it but then it throws up the dos like page asking for either 'mac-boot' or 'shut-down'. I typed in mac-boot then the screen went black and white and then coloured, all in straight lines, then nothing. It was like some major disk error thing! I can restart fine though if I unplug the firewire. Can anybody help?  biggrin.gif

Thanks Tacit, you're right - it didn't work  mad.gif

I've tried switching off various other extensions in case of conflicts but no luck. I know it must have something to do with TCP/IP and remote access because I was trying to install an ISP when it happened, together with the airport software disappearing.

Think I might have to restore the OS  sad.gif

Thanks for the suggestions. It's an ibook (not the new one, about 3 yrs old) running OS 9.2.2. I'm going to copy the extension from another mac and replace the corrupt one, hopefully that should work. Odd though, my airport settings have disappeared sad.gif

The above extension is really causing me some grief at the moment! I can't enable it, everytime I do my ibook crashes on start-up. All other extensions are enabled ok. As a consequence I can't open any programs, my beloved mac is powerless! When I try to open programs it flashes up the "OTUtilityLib" warning. Does anybody know a miraculous cure? I'll love you forever!  mad.gif
