Thanks, Paddy. It's good to be missed. I've been busy building a Habitat for Humanity house, my fourteenth.

Tech / The LinkedIn Scam
« on: September 08, 2013, 01:53:47 PM »
I was happy to see this post. I, too, occasionally get posts from LinkedIn. I looked at the site years ago but decided not to participate. Now I get invitations in the names people I know, but doubt very much that they originated with the individuals. I guess once you are in the data base you are there forever. Now I know to just ignore those invitations. Besides, I don't need a job. I have been retired for nineteen years. My, how time flies!

Never mind. He has AppleCare. He called Apple and they said his keyboard was bad. They will send him another.

Tech / Shiftless

A friend has problems with his Shift Key. Basically, it doesn't work. Caps Lock works, but it is awkward to use. If he opens the Keyboard Viewer and clicks on Shift, the keys change from lowercase to caps, as they should. However if he presses the either of the keyboard shift keys, the characters don't change. I'm guessing he has a bad keyboard. Is there any way he could have changed the Shift key to another function by accident? He is using System 10.6.8.

SAD COMMENTARY

Apple Corp now worth more than Euro Zone banks. All of them. Put together.

Tech / I'm Stumped!
« on: February 27, 2011, 04:45:24 PM »
Here's a suggestion that might help, gleaned from the early days of really expensive RAM. Have only one application open at a time. When you leave an application, be sure you Quit it--don't just close the window. I have been unable to convince my wife to do that, but with enough RAM it isn't a problem.

You might also try Zamzar free file conversions at

I don't know if it will convert Real Audio, but it lists a whole bunch of types.

Tech / Free Sophos Antivirus Software
« on: November 04, 2010, 07:14:31 PM »
Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition is offered free at:

http://www.sophos.com/products/free-tools/...virus/download/

Anyone use it or know anything about it? Is appears to be free, but I am always somewhat leery of freebies.

Here's info from the Sophos web site:

Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac: Home Edition is software that detects and deals with threats (viruses,
worms, and Trojans) on your Mac. As well as being able to detect Mac OS X threats, it can also
detect Windows threats that might be stored on your Mac and transferred to Windows computers.
Sophos Anti-Virus is preconfigured with the recommended settings for protection. We recommend
that you don’t make changes to the settings unless there is a specific need or problem that you are
aiming to address.

Tech / Kindle for Mac
« on: March 28, 2010, 09:41:24 PM »
I haven't been on this site for a while, and maybe this has been covered. I have a Kindle and use it a lot. Amazon has released Kindle for Mac free software. Using it you can purchase and download books from the Kindle site--you don't have to own a Kindle. Most best sellers are $9.99. There are many free books available, many thousands of them in public domain, but a large number of recent publications also. I don't really want to read books on my computer but many people may want to try it. Go to:

or http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/dis...odeId=200438360
for information and to download the software.

At least three of them worked on my Sys 10.4

2009 / Can't completely empty trash
« on: September 10, 2009, 05:09:28 PM »
A friend installed Sys 10.6 and now wants to empty trash that contains old system folders. Everything is deleted except for old sys folders. Option/Empty Trash won't work. I did a Techsurvivors search but couldn't find any help.

Help?

2009 / Kindle?
« on: March 23, 2009, 11:42:05 AM »
>Server as in it's no longer on your Kindle?

That's right. It is stored by Amazon. All the books you buy are stored on their server. You can delete them from your Kindle, then download them at any time.

Here's another feature that hasn't been mentioned. You can put your own documents on your Kindle. Simply save them in Word as a .doc file, email them to your Kindle address, and they will be converted and downloaded to your Kindle.
