2006 / iDVD
« on: May 29, 2006, 05:43:02 PM »
I experienced the same regret with iMovie and iDVD 6.  I trashed the programs and preferences, and did a custom install of iDVD and iMovie 5.  The both work fine.  If you need to get the progrsms from the original install disks, try the software restore disk.  That'll probably put the programs back for you.

2004 / Scanner problems
« on: January 05, 2004, 09:00:19 AM »
I just upgraded to 10.3 and now my Microtek ScanMaker 4850 won't work.  It worked fine in Jaguar two days ago, so I'm sure that it's a software problem.  I downloaded the latest software update from Microtek, but nothing works,  Anybody out there have a similar problem with scanning in 10.3?

2004 / Problems with new ibook and iPod
« on: January 01, 2004, 04:46:40 PM »
We've got both-a G3 800Mhz iBook and an iPod.  The iBook, which we've had for about 8 months, worked fine until one day-poof.  Nothing.  Took it back to the Apple store, and they fixed it under warranty, putting in a new logic board.  They had to ship it to Memphis, and it took about 5 days.  I was impressed with the quick turnaround time, and my wife just loves the iBook.  I've had the iPod since October.  I've got ALL of our CD's on it, so anywhere we go, we can take our music collection with us.  Pretty neat.  I wish my car stereo had a jack to plug it in, like some after market car stereos do.  The FM transmitter is nice, but there's better sound with a direct hookup.  I've heard about the battery problem, that it dies after about 18 months.  Apparently, Apple has a replacement program, for $99.00.  I guess that's reasonable.  All in all, we have no regrets about either the iPod orthe iBook. There will always be people who are surprised when electronic things don't work, like those petition signers that you mentioned.  I figure, as long as Apple is willing to stand behind the product, it's worth it.
There's my two cent's worth!  Sorry if I got a little wordy.

2004 / Graphite iMac DV's Internal CD/DVD has died.
« on: December 19, 2003, 05:34:48 PM »
Using an ADS FireWire drive enclosure, and a Sony CD-RW drive that originally came with my Mac until I replaced it with a DVD-R drive, I started up my Mac with it as the startup drive as you asked.  It worked fine.

I've taken apart my son's iMac a couple of times.  I'd say it's medium in the difficulty range.  Here's a link for iMac resources, one of the links from there shows how to do it picture by picture.

The CD/DVD drive should be removable easily enough, but replacement might be tough, since it's a slot-loader.  That model might be hard to come by, tray-loaders are much more common.  If you have FireWire, then an external CD or DVD drive can boot up your Mac, I think.

2003 / Resurrecting trusty 6500
« on: December 09, 2003, 05:57:37 PM »
Question:  Why do you have to connect the modem through the printer port?  This may solve your problem:
6400s, and I think 6500s with internal modems have a piece of plastic inserted in the modem port, because, with the internal modem, the port is disabled.  If you remove the internal modem, and then take the plastic piece outt of the modem port, you should be able to hook up an external modem.

2003 / Alchemy-Analogue to Digital Video card for $109.

That's a great price.  I've got a Formac external device, it hooks up to a VCR and also has a  TV tuner, I use it a lot and really like it.  The one you're looking at is a lot less expensive, I'll tell you.  The only problem I can see with it is that it doesn't have a coaxial hookup, only S-VHS and Component.  You couldn't hook up a TV cable to it without one of those, I think.

2003 / Firewire Hard Drive case

Check Other World Computing here:

http://eshop.macsales.com/Static_Pages/ind...rocess=firewire

They also sell them at Comp USA.

You won't get firewire speeds from them, because you still have an IDE drive.  But they're easy to connect, and hot-swappable.  No master/slave drive issues, either, as with internal IDE.  You can hook up as many as you want.

When iTunes checks for track titles, it goes to this site:

http://www.gracenote.com/music/

You might be able to go there and check on the disk yourself.  It's a pretty neat site.

Check out the Sony Mavica CD cameras. The write to a mini-CD,which allows you to archive all of your photos is a manageable space.  I have a Mavica CD1000, now out of production, but there are others.  One CD can hold up to 150 pictures.

2003 / ext. DVD-RW drive
« on: October 09, 2003, 05:56:51 PM »
There are two kinds of DVDs, the '+' and the '-'.  Diffedrent formats, kind of like VHS and Beta videocassettes.  With a Mac, the '-' seems to be the one to use.  It sounds like your DVD-R drive is a Pioneer, which is what is on most Macs.  Since it is an external drive, you can not use iDVD to burn a disk.  Because of licensing problems of some sort, Apple made the program so that it would only work with an internal DVD drive.  Roxio's Toast seems to be a good DVDs. I don't use Toast, my drive is internal, so I use iDVD,but all reviews of it that I have seen are good.  It's about $99.00.  Using iMovie and Toast you should be able to make a DVD that you can view on most any DVD player.
DVD-RW disks are tricky, because some DVD players apparently can't read them.  You're probably better off sticking with DVD-Rs.  I've heard that OSX has trouble recognizing DVD-RWs, but I'm not sure about that.
     Hope this helps.

2003 / Mac comaptible PDA's ?
« on: September 22, 2003, 06:16:21 PM »
As they always say, you have to look at what you're going to be doing with it.  My wife & I  owned a small business, and used a Palm M100, the basic model.  We kept track of our weekly orders on it, had all of our  salesman's contacts on it, and had memory to spare.  Running the business would have been considerably more difficult without it.  The only problem was that the M100 apparently is not USB capable, and now that we no longer have a Mac with a serial port, we can't hot sync it.  I think that all the other models have a USB hookup.  Just a suggestion, but the M125 sounds like a pretty good deal.  You can do a lot with just the basic Palm programs that come with the PDA.

2003 / problems with epson printers

I used to have a C-60, until it broke down.  The worst part about it was how expensive the ink was, and how frequently I had to replace them.  I now have a Canon i450, and I like a lot better.  Prints well, reasonably priced ink, and a lot quieter.
