2003 / A new Mac?
« on: June 26, 2003, 09:51:09 AM »
The thing is that the new Macs are a little bit more expensive than the G4's, however, the newer the computer you buy now, the longer you can put off posting this same thing in the near future. Although the G4's have dropped in price, and are nice machines, there is really no competition with the G5's. It's like putting a 1Ghz G4 against my 8600/300. You will probably benefit more from buying a new machine, even if it's the entry class one for just a little more than the midrange G4.

Well, to my surprise, people over at MacAddict had nothing but good things to say about running X Server on an 8600/300

Whattaya know, huh? Of course, XPostFacto was suggested, as the 8600 is not on the /official/ 'supported' list. Still, thopugh, I'm a happy camper.

Ummm... here's a thought:
Apple-History.com tells me the MAX OS is 9.1
(http://www.apple-history.com/frames/body.php?page=gallery&model=8600)
BUT
eBay tells me that someone installed 10.1.5
(http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3401276019&category=4607)

explanations, anyone?

Here's a crazy idea:

(don't shun me...)

What if I get [my hands on] OS X 10.2 Server? Will it run if I cough up the dough for RAM? I can buy 128-meg chips online for about $20 apiece, so I guess two will do the trick. Will it work? Also, will a PC-native PCI Netgear card work on the Mac? I took a look at Mac's PCI slots and saw that they are one module-increment bigger. (PC PCI has two module contact rows, Mac's PCI has three. At least on my G4/500 Server.)

So yea, will the 8600/300 pull as a server? I think the 1MB of L2 cache will do wonders.

Also, what's the MAX OS I can put on there? If it's 9, I guess there's no sense in putting it p rather than 9.1.x, but if it's X, I might spring for that extra 64MB of SD-RAM. (again, bus?)

/Also/, what's the minimum req's for 9? 128? X? 128 also??

Helo, people. Here's a question more in your knowledge base than mine, as I was probably still in Russia when this Mac was shipping...

An 8600/300 with 64MB RAM and a ~4 Gig SCSI HD. Now, here's some tech-spec questions...

What kind of bus does the RAM run on? 66Mhz, 100, 133?
What's the MAX-OUT on Ram?
Can I get a new video card and still use the RCA-IN and OUT with the same dis/advantages? Can I expand the Video memory? (there's about 3 or so clusters of RAM slots, maybe 10 or more in all...)

Any info is appreciated. No offence on the age thing..

By the way, Gregg, that translates into:

"ÅEÊ?TT"

...I guess it wasn't really anything.

Well, I'm usually up-to-date on the OS thing, so I have OS 10.2.3 right now... any differences in Apple Script btwn now and OS 8.5? (when the manual you linked to was released)

But I might need a halping hand.

The first thing I'd like to learn is how to script actions (like pressing cmd+k, down twice, enter, type login, tab, type password, enter, etc.). Is there any way to record stuff like that? I'm sorry, I've never used AppleScript before. Anyway, anyone got time to kill?

2003 / New Flat Panel iMacs announced !!
« on: February 04, 2003, 12:13:00 PM »
My personal opinion is as follows, but take this into consideration:

I am usng a G4/500 purchased in '00.
Next to me is an iMac/333 purchased in '98

Around my room are 6 (six) PC's.

I love my Macs, but PC's have their uses too.

Now:

If you have a PC right now, I assume it's a tower+monitor, and not an ePC or whatever iMac knockoffs came out in 99-00. If you buy a G4 tower (cheapest @ $1500) and use your PC's monitor (hey, I know Apple displays are beautiful, but money's money.) you will be spending the bext extra $300 on a computer for a long time (I am assuming you're looking to but the lowest config iMac, alter accordingly.)  The tower, as I have come to find out, offers MUCH MORE in expandability than the iMac. Even is you /dont/ look forward to adding your own SCSI controllers or maxing out your tower at 2 gigs of sdram, it still pays to have the option to be able to install another harddrive (to fix a friend's, etc) and change the CD-ROM or add a ZIP drive, etc. etc. etc. withough having cables hanging off every part of your table. That, and internal peripherals. cost less than external.

just my opinion.

plus, towers look more proffessional, especially if you're using it with a beige monitor. 1337.
