Hello, I'm back!  One more problem to include:

Now my friend's Netscape home page is loading - but halfway through its loading it stops and displays the "socket connection not available" message.  He then clicks "OK" and the message window disappears.  Then  the home page (very slowly) finishes loading!
Wazzup with this?    Thinking.gif

Krissel (and Bernie),

My friend has clicked on the "Make Active" tab; but neither of us can find the "Options" tab/button anywhere.  Please advise.   sad.gif

I am going to have him buy 64 MB RAM to upgrade his RAM total
to 136 MB.  I think this will allow me to upgrade his OS to 9.2 and his Netscape to 7.x.  The RAM numbers for OS 9.2 and Netscape 7.x seem to fit well within his RAM limits.  Does this sound risky to you?

Bernie,

He is running OS 8.1.  I will contact him this weekend!

What is my best method to keep you updated?   clap.gif

Bernie,

Thank you for your advice.  I have already verified the TCP/IP
setup.

I will have to call my friend to have him check the next part:

Bernie's Quote:
"Then go up to the file menu (left upper of you screen) and select "Configurations" Click on the "Make Active " Tab. Also in "Options " Uncheck Load only when needed :0) Harv made me use my brain this evening.

Are both the "Configurations" and "Options" listed under the "File"
dropdown menu in Netscape 4.73?

Thank you, TS Maven (and all others who read my problem) for
your time and efforts!

My friend's computer is an:  Apple (PowerPC) Performa 6400/180

Additional info:  I have already reset his cable modem, and I have also disconnected and reconnected his ethernet cable.

I await your response!    notworthy.gif

My friend has an older Mac.  He is running OS 8.1, Netscape 4.73, and is maxed out at 72 MB RAM!  He is using a cable modem, and his ISP is Comcast.

Most of the time, when he tries to start up his Netscape, he receives a "socket connection not available" error message.
However, every once in awhile, he does succeed in accessing the Internet.

I have run Tech Tool Pro, Norton Utilities, and Disk Warrior on this Mac.  Nothing has changed.  Should I trash his Netscape Preferences?  Should I download Netscape 4.79 for him (I do
not think that his Mac will be able to handle Netscape 7.x)?

Please advise.  Thank you!!

Is it it possible for me to upgrade from OmniPage 7 (SCSI only)
to the OmniPage Pro X (upgrade version)?

2003 / PowerBook\'s HD disappeared!

Dreambird,

Thank you for replying.  I did try DiskWarrior and
had no success.  I have been using TechTool 3.0.6
without success.

I think it may be time to initialize the hard drive (yeech!).

My son's PowerBook 3400 has lost its hard drive.  When I start it up, the folder and question mark appear, and the computer will not load the OS 9.

I booted up with TechTool Pro and ran it.  I manipulated the software to search for any "missing volumes", and it found the PowerBook's hard drive!

Then I received a message that the volume directories need to be "rebuilt" on the hard drive.  But the "Rebuild" button, on TechTool Pro, is grayed out, so I cannot do a rebuild.  Plus, I cannot see the PowerBook's hard drive on the desktop.

Please advise.

2003 / Netcape 7.02 - needs "bug" spray
« on: April 13, 2003, 10:58:00 AM »
Update:  So far, Mozilla 1.2.1 is working well for me and OS9.
It seems to be more reliable than Netscape 7.  (btw, I did not like Opera - esp. since it has no built-in email function).

Dreambird & Gary S,

Thanks for your advice!  I will follow through on my part.

I will also be trying "Opera 6" and "Mozilla".

Hi again!  And my thanks to all of you for your advice and most informative responses!

A couple of you have asked about what specific problems I am having with Netscape 7.02:  Here is my list...

1)  Many times the "Back" button appears to be "locked down"; this results in the following (major) problems:  navigating with the "Back" button and not being able to type URL's or fill-in text boxes.

2)  No email notification alert

3)  When I click on the "Home" button, too many times I have been transported to the previous page, not my home page.

4)  I cannot use Windows Media Player's plug-in or "Net-Print" with Netscape 7.xx.

5)  I do not know whow to eliminate the annoying sound when I page finished downloading (ok, this is really not a major problem      )

6)  Sometimes, my typed text will be displayed ever-so-slowly (while the cursor remains a stopwatch until the typing is completed).  This just happened as I was typing this reply.

7)  When I open two or more browser window "Tabs", there is an excellent possibility that this browser will eventually quit on me.

My Apple G3's specs:  OS 9.2.2 with 256 MB RAM (and plenty of RAM Memory allotted to Nescape 7.02).

I am so frustrated with Netscape 7.02.  In spite of all of its great features (i.e., Password Manager, tabbing windows, etc.).
it is so "buggy" that I am seeking an alternative...

Am I better off switching to Mozilla or Netscape 4.xx?
