Tech / how to Zoom
« on: Today at 07:56:59 AM »
I am a complete novice with Zoom, having neither used it myself nor seen it done. In a few weeks, I will be participating in a Zoom meeting with the members of my orchestra and I need to know how to do it. I have set up an account at https://zoom.us and don't have a clue about what to do.

Can someone walk me through the procedure?

Tech / cannot print this page
« on: October 14, 2020, 01:28:02 PM »
When I access this site and try to print it, I see nothing but a blank page in the print dialog box. However, if I go to File > Export as PDF and then print the PDF, all is well. This has sometimes happened with other sites as well. Any thoughts?

Community / if possible, vote in person
« on: August 17, 2020, 08:35:57 AM »
Because of the controversy involving the US Post Office, I intend to vote in person on Election Day. I will take all necessary precautions, but I want my vote to count. I urge all TS members and their friends and family to seriously consider this instead of voting by mail.

Tech / printer cable recommendation
« on: August 12, 2020, 06:36:31 PM »
I'm going to replace my current USB A to USB B printer cable because it may have problems (long story). I'm willing to spend some money if it results in a quality cable. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Tech / Mail will not retrieve emails from one account
« on: July 30, 2020, 01:29:26 PM »
In Mail, I have one account for myself and one for my wife. Mine is working normally but hers can send email but not retrieve them. If she signs into her webmail account at Spectrum, she can see her emails from there.

I have tried the following:

1. Her account initially was offline so I put it online.
2. I toggled the account offline and then online.
3. I rebuilt her mailbox.
4. I used Disk Utility to run First Aid.
5. I quit Mail and relaunched it.
6. Restarting did not solve it.
7. At first, Outlook could not retrieve her mail either. I reset the password and Outlook succeeded in downloading her email.
8. I re-applied the Combo 10.15.6 update.
9. A phone call to Spectrum was non-productive. The rep told me that, since webmail was working, I would have to contact Apple.
10. There is a warning triangle at her mailbox. When I click it, I get the following:

Online Status

There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “cchuzi RR” or try again.

The server returned the error: Connections to host POP-server.hvc.rr.com on the default ports failed.

Please advise.

EDIT: Apple had me delete my wife's account and set it up again. Now, I can download her emails but she lost all her previous emails. Time Machine does not respond when I want to go back to this morning to restore the emails. I am currently running First Aid on Time Machine. Unfortunately, I got cut off from Apple and am trying to re-establish contact.

If I need to restore her emails, which file do I look for in either a clone or Time Machine?

Tech / an old tip but still a good one
« on: July 17, 2020, 03:50:51 PM »
I tried to launch TechToolPro 12.0.3 and it froze (spinning beachball). I uninstalled it, reinstalled it, and got nowhere. Micromat sent me a fresh installer but that didn't solve the problem. At Micromat's request, I sent them a system report. Within a minute, a lightbulb flashed in my mind: Restart!

Problem solved! This has solved issues with other apps (notably Microsoft AutoUpdate) and I should have thought of it first. Duh!!!

Just a thought and reminder to everyone...

Tech / Upgrading a Mac Pro is too convoluted
« on: July 03, 2020, 09:34:20 AM »
In the past, upgrading a Mac Pro or G4 or G5 was a straightforward process. The new Mac Pro, however, makes adding internal storage very convoluted. Read  Mac Pro woes, 'iPhone 12' delays, and Apple's passport ambitions, on the AppleInsider podcast and watch the video. I have no need for a Mac Pro and I would have second thoughts about even buying one.

Tech / new malware in the wild
« on: June 18, 2020, 01:05:24 PM »
New Mac malware uses 'novel' tactic to bypass macOS Catalina security Since this malware can be downloaded via a Google search, I'm doubly glad that I use DuckDuckGo instead (although I don't know if DDG is susceptible as well).

Tech / SSD checker
« on: June 18, 2020, 07:04:20 AM »
I came across  SSDReporter at MacUpdate. It looks interesting, although it only checks internal SSDs. I know nothing about it but I'm passing this on in case anyone cares to comment. Supposedly, it will check the SSD portion of Fusion drives.

Tech / "Jabber" in Contacts?
« on: June 15, 2020, 07:28:39 PM »
When I want to edit an entry in Contacts, home (just above the home mailing address) has User Name in gray and then a popup menu that says Jabber. Clicking the up-down arrows shows a range of choices, including Yahoo and Facebook.

What is this? When I'm finished editing and click Done, Jabber is no longer in evidence. However, "FaceTime" appears in the contact window between two lines. What is this all about?

Tech / Tip: deleting spam without reading it
« on: June 10, 2020, 01:24:17 PM »
I sometimes get emails that are obviously spam when I read the subject line. Rather than look at them, I delete them by Control-clicking the email and selecting Delete from the contextual menu. I can then go to my Trash folder in Mail and repeat the process.

Another tip: Beware that some emails can have hidden links. I have accidentally clicked in a blank area of an email and been directed to an unwanted web page.

Look for symbols substituted for letters, obvious misspellings, and spurious email addresses from the sender. I received an email, purportedly from someone I knew, that had wsorchesttra as the return email. Her correct address is wsorchestra (one t). The sender pretended to be this woman, asking me a favor if I could send money to a needy friend of hers. Naturally, I phoned her and she had been on the phone with AOL for two hours trying to resolve the problem (all her contacts had been hacked).

Be vigilant! There are lots of dirt bags out there with no conscience or morality.
