Best Scanner

I am shopping for a scanner and would like some advice.  

Typically will be used for photos and sometimes to blow them up.  Other times used for scanning lineart.

What scanner is being used most out there and has a great reputation

I recommend Hewlett-Packard.

My  three reasons:
(1) They make good stuff -- I've used their printers and scanners for years.
(2) My son was an R&D engineer with HP for fifteen years, specializing in scanners. He still works for them, but he is now in the legal department.
(3) I am a Hewlett-Packard stockholder (but their products perform better than their stocks).

AM I BIASED?

You could try to get a used Heidelberg Linoscan scanner.

Probably the #1 high-end scanners available.
However, Heidelberg discontinued their scanner section, so you'd have to get a used one.

And you'd have to be prepared for an extremely complex, powerful and complicated scanner software.

Depends on what the output is going to be. If you only are going to do scans for yourself and not for advanced printing in 6 colors and 200 lpi, then I guess you could get away with even a simple scanner like the Canon's. Just remember: the more pixles (for instance 2400x4800) the better and also the higher number of the bit depth, the better.

I bought a cheap Canon scanner for home to do some lineart and some photo's and it's been working great. I could have gone for their mid-range scanners, but I thought "nah, I use this until the need rises for more and better". It's light weight and it matches my PowerBook.

This scanner will be replacing an Agfa ArcusII.  It is used for a wide range of things from who cares what the quality is to the best quality for 6 color press.

I've been told to make sure to get 48 bit and of course the best resolution.

There are so many out there I'm not sure which way to go.  Some say Epson, some say HP.

I am running 10.2.5 and 9.2.2 on a seperate partition.  I recently purchased the Canon Canoscan 30.  I bought this unit because it was advertised to work In OS 10. Believe me it does not. It brings up classic to be able to function at all. I sure get weary of false advertising just to move a product.

Hmm! It seems as tho I downloaded an earlier software set for the canoscan 30.  I dumped the files and downloaded the latest and now it works as advertised. My bad.
