Still can\'t share my tunes
« on: May 07, 2003, 02:55:00 PM »
I am thus far unable to share with my friends using iTunes4 & OS
10.2.6, plus the latest Quicktime.

I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 router, so I have followed these
instructions from Apple:
Open the iTunes sharing port in Firewall (3689). Follow these steps
on the sharing computer:
1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences.
2. Choose View > Sharing.
3. Click the Firewall tab.
4. Click the New button.
5. Choose Other from the Port Name pop-up menu.
6. Type: 3689
7. Press Tab.
8. Type: iTunes Sharing
9. Click OK.

I have also found an option in the router itself to open this same port.

My IP address is currently: 66.32.81.30. iTunes is up & running, and
under Sharing preferences, it says it is on.

Can anybody find my tunes? Can anybody suggest anything else?

If you have a router, there is no reason to turn on the firewall built into OS X. Also, make sure sharing is turned on in the iTunes preferences. Finally, in your router's setup, you'll have to find something that says "virtual server" or a similar setup. In that, you will have to point the iTunes port to your computer's IP address. Just opening the hole in the router's firewall isn't enough.

iTunes Sharing tells me that it is on.
My current IP is 66.32.82.214, although this seems to change while I'm online. I've been using http://www.whatismyip.org/ to check it.

I think what I want is contained on this part of my Linksys setup, but there are plenty of other options, very few of which I understand.

I'm ready to give up on this; it would be nice to do, but just seems too hard to accomplish. And even if I manage it once, it seems as though I would have to check my current IP & give it to friends before each sharing session.

Hi Thomas,

I just tried to connect to you and couldn't.

On your router for port forwarding, try turning on both tcp and udp for protocol (have no idea which one would be used, supposing TCP, but to be safe), also designate the same port # for your internal port and then you will have to designate an IP address of the Mac on your LAN that you would like to use this service (the Mac that yu want to share iTunes music).  Then apply.

Ok, I've done that, although I couldn't turn on both, so I chose tcp.

Has anybody tried http://www.dyndns.org/ to get a static IP?
What's involved & is it something that would be helpful here?

Here I was ready to give up, but with the kind help of others, you can now try, at least when I have itunes fired up:

daap://englandphoto.zapto.org

Put that in your browser, or just the englandphoto.zapto.org into iTunes (Cmd-K)

I think this will overcome the changing IP problem
