Strange Netscape 7.0.1 deal with Memory
« on: February 07, 2003, 11:02:00 PM »
This is the first time this has happened but it was kind of strange.

I was surfing on Netscape 7.0.1 and opened Photoshop to look at something. Anyways, I start getting these really slow screen redraws which never happened before.
I clicked on the Desktop to see how much memory was being used by Netscape and it was using 480 mb! I have Photoshop using 300mb so.........

I only had 35mb alocated to Netscape. I quit NS and relaunched and everything is fine.
I was just surprised that it would be possible for it to get to 480mb!

Gary...

Have you checked what the history and cache are set for in NS7.01?
If they're at "50" by default like NS7.0 was... set them down... a lot!

Clear the history and cache while you're at it... I have heard of Netscape history files being capable of hitting 100mb...

History set to "0".

Memory Cache set to 5800k.

Disk Cache set to 6000k.

What do you have them set for?

Those figures look fine Gary...

Actually I don't have NS7.x installed right now... I took v7.0 for a good test drive and then saw "signs" of it messing with my NS4.76 a bit. I still (up til now anyway) like that one's Messenger best. In fact from looking at the NS forum on the Windows board most of the problems seem to be mail related. But when I did I used a History setting of 6, Memory Cache setting I left at the default and Disk Cache setting of 0.

Your memory allotment of 35mb should be plenty too, I found that 24mb was good enough on 7.0... but I don't use a lot of plugins.

When you upgraded from v7.0 to v7.01 did you by chance run the upgrade over v.7.0? You might want to check the "history.dat" file in your user profile just to be sure that one didn't turn into a huge file... if so delete it and let NS start up a fresh one.

I can't find anything in the release notes that says there's a problem with that in this version so if it's not a bloated .dat file, I'd just consider it a fluke...

Thanks DB,

I deleted the History file, which was 10MB.

I'll see how it goes.
