Beige G3 / Jaguar Problem

I'm having some problems getting a burner to run properly under Jaguar on a Beige G3 (256Meg RAM).  I've tried both a SCSI Yamaha and a IDE Yamaha and both of them are said to be "fully supported" in the Apple System Profiler but I can't get them to work to do anything except iTUNES burning.  What does "fully supported" mean?

BTW, other than the peripherals not working, how is Jaguar doing on that Beige G3?
I have been muddling around thinking of putting it on one of my partitions but I just can't afford to have any problems because I do a lot of scanning and my scanner isn't supported.

The only other problem I'm having is getting the thing to recognize a previously bootable hard drive with 10.1.5 and 9.2.1 partitions on it.  If I sub it as master on the channel that normally has the internal CDROM drive it still doesn't mount it; Profiler "sees" it but doesn't mount it!  I know some of these Beige G3's  won't work with more than one drive on a channel but I thought that was only some of the 233MHz models (this is a 266MHz) and this worked before I swapped in another drive to experiment on!

Is there any thought that zapping the PRAM and/or rebuilding the desktop helping in Jaguar?

Gary. Everything I've read makes OS X on a Beige Box an "Adventure".

Would only recommend it if you really enjoy tinkering/troubleshooting.

Ganug, what program are you trying to use to burn data and what Yamaha burner models are you trying this with?

I have an External Yamaha 6x4x16 SCSI burner hooked up to my beige G3 tower (rev. 1), OS is Jaguar (10.2.3) with 576MB RAM.

My Yamaha burner is recognized by iTunes and Toast 5.2.

About the ROM revision, there were rev 1 (A) beiges that came out @ 266 MHz.  Check your ROM revision in Apple System Profiler with this tech article from OWC.

Gary, Along with my B&W tower, I have two beige G3's that are running Jaquar (10.2.3) with no problems (or should I say, very little problems), both @ 400 MHz.

Al: I don't see anything in Profiler about the ROM version unless it's in the line about machine type; mine says Power Mac G3 (version = 2.2).

Did you mean to show a link where you said something about OWC?  I'll do a google on it!

I'm trying "not" to buy Toast for OS 10; I have a copy at home that came with my FIREWIRE burner but this is not a good time for educational budgets in Kansas!

Your right, in OS X the ROM revision doesn't show in ASP.  Try boot into OS 9 and use OS 9's ASP.  It will be there.

I just tried using Disk Copy to burn some data, the data has to be in a disk image file (.dmg) to be burnt.  My Yamaha SCSI 6x4x16 was recognized and the task was success.

So, what software are you using to try to burn with your burner/s?

Also, while in OS X, open ASP again and go to "Devices and Volumes", see if your burner is being recognized, if so, open it up and see if it says your burner/s is/are fully supported for disk burning.

 Use the Apple System Profiler, located in the Apple menu, to help determine which logic board revision you have. Open Apple System Profiler, click the System Profile tab within the window, and then look at the Production Information section. Compare it to the table below to determine which revision of the logic board is in your Power Macintosh G3 (platinum) computer.

I'm running out of time today to mess with this G3 and I put my old dual/part drive with 10.1.5 and 9.2.1 on it and apparently Jaguar has eaten it.  I'll proceed with this on Monday!  Thanks everyone!

Apparently I've got Revision 3 ROM.  I'm still exploring why I can't see my other hard drive (hooked up as the second drive on the second channel with a regular 24x CD-ROM as the first drive).

Hi Ganug,

If the drives are IDE, check that either of the devices are not set for "Master single", and are either set for "master" and the other "slave" in the jumper settings.

If the drives are SCSI, double check your SCSI ID#'s.

That's all I could come up with at the moment.

I got the above to be recognized by installing OS 9.2.1 on the other partition of the drive on the 1st ide channel.  Once I installed that I could get it to see the two partitions on the drive slaved off the second ide channel with the CD-ROM as master.  This seems to work now even when running booting up and running Jaguar.  Kind of seems like Twilight Zone stuff to me but I guess I'll go back and try to reinstall the ide Yamaha burner in place of the 24x CDROM.  

I think that the situation with the SCSI  burner is that it's "fully supported" but that means that you can use a given package to burn a CD; it's not supported at the BSD driver level (or whatever this is with OSX).  You can't even get it to recogize a standard factory burned CD (it only offers to IGNORE or EJECT the thing and won't even really EJECT it without saying pretty please).  I guess TOAST must add more of this driver level support.
