Earthlink email scam in progress........
« on: February 08, 2003, 08:42:00 PM »
Seems to be an active Earthlink scam. Emails arriving and directing e/l subscribers to the following link http://www.earthlink-billings.com .

This link is registered to:
Registrant:

Domain Name: EARTHLINK-BILLING.COM

Administrative Contact:

Fax: +1.4166610700

It links through Germany. The really disturbing thing is I followed the link and clicked home page and it took me to my actual Earthlink homepage, so it's pretty sophisticated.

I know that old timers are ever alert to email stuff, but others  could easily believe this was real.

Very cleverly done. It's just the dash in the name and the com rather than net that gives it away. They used an actual header with EarthLink links at the top so you would believe you are on their site.

It uses a form that is free from   this place.

Only one person on their forum page has mentioned the scam so I took the liberty of sending a message to their contact personnel. Hope someone is watching.

Nice work k. I contacted e/l's security email site and got an automated reply filled with enough gobbldygook to make the PR arm of the RIAA or the info office of the White House proud.

errr...Seem's I can't help myself sometimes - important times.

Incidentally, my own solution to internet security is to simply open a bank debit card. It's like a checking account (in fact it is a checking account). Don't provide any sort of overdraft protection and they can only bill you for what's in the account. No chance of anyone running up a tab on your account.

If I buy something, I simply go to my bank site and transfer the funds.

I also got a form reply from Earth Link but I did get a more direct follow up message from Technoserve:

Hello Kris,

Thank you for your message the contents of which have been noted.

The account in question has now been terminated and systems have been put in place to stop further accounts being used for the domain
