Associating extensions with applications

I've a feeling I posted a similar query shortly before our change of board but fear it may be one of the ones that got lost.

Different application, different extension  
This time I want any ".doc" item to open in Textedit (in Tiger) rather than trying to open the "trial run of Microsoft Word 2004 which has expired..."

Done a search, looked in the Finder Help file, nothing! (Probably searching with the wrong words). Would someone be so kind as to repeat the info given the last time?

Click on one .doc file once to hilight it, then:

• do a right-click and select Get Info from the pop up window. Or
• Command (Apple) + I keys. Or
• Get Info in Finder ---> File

In the Get Info window, you'll see an Open with: section about three quarters down. In the drop-down menu choose TextEdit.app and then click on Change All... right below the drop-down menu.

That should do the trick.

And simply delete Word if you do not plan on buying it. It probably is an old version anyway so it will be obsolete if you change your mind in buying it one day.
