Is it as easy as opening the finder.png file in Photoshop, editing it, then saving it again as finder.png in the /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/ folder? Overriding the original (of which I will make a copy, of course )

In theory this seems like it would work... Doesn't it? I know there are programs which will do this for me, but I am starting to get adventurous in X... Soon I am going to start playing in the Terminal!

It may work, but you'll need to be root, and probably be better to use the Terminal rather than the finder.

The technique you describe would work with a regular grahic and I've used it before to change the "Other" user graphic in the login screen as described in this old post.

The directions were for OS X 10.1.x and no longer apply to Jaguar. The OtherUser.tiff has been moved elsewhere.

It doesn't work Jay...

I tried it and no luck. Don't know what the .png image is used for, but it's not for the Dock icon.

The dock Finder must be an .icns file or an alias to the REAL finder icon.

Go to "your OS X hard drive">System>Library>Core Services. In there you will find the finder app and another finder called the fake finder (what's that for?).

I am assuming you can do just like any other application in changing it's icon. But just incase, get info (Command I) on the finder, highlight the finder icon and copy it. Then open Photoshop and start a new PS document and paste the icon in. Alter it however you please, save it, then copy it, and go back to that "Get Info" window for the Finder and paste it in. Remove the original Finder alias in the Dock and replace it with the new finder by dragging the Finder to the Dock to create an alias.

I tried this up to altering the Finder icon in Photoshop, but did go through with changing it in the Get Info window.
