OT: Steven Rambam (aka Steven Rombom) arrested by FBI
« on: July 24, 2006, 07:44:04 AM »
If you've ever read any of Kinky Friedman's detective stories you might remember Steven Rambam as a character who was a computer expert and investigator.  It turns out he is a real person; who knew?  There is a nice article about him at the Washington Post but you can't link those directly, so here is something at Boing Boing:

http://www.boingboing.net/2006/07/22/at_ho...cker_con_s.html

If you research the man, as I have now that I know he's real, you can see he may be a fighter for the kind of freedom of information that you're interested in.  I don't know what he did to get the FBI in his face but he has done some arguably good things over the years!

One of the reasons I may not have thought Rambam was real was the evidence that Kinky Friedman might not be real (even though he's running for the Governor of Texas):

Later: This appears to be a charge of tampering with a witness in a federal case against a NY area Asst. District Attorney.  Probably more than people wanted to know!

Hmmm    I am not  buying this entirely.  It may be 100% true but I am skeptical    whenever Kinky Fredman is involved ~ and  someone  claiming to be named  RAMBAM.  A  Jewish sense of humor always includes a measure of self-mockery, e.g.  The use of the name KINKY;  however in all of my life  I have never met or even seen referenced anyone audacious, arrogant and self-aggrandizing enough to refer to himself as RAMBAM.  What the hell am I ranting about?     Find out:         http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rambam

The Feds think his name is ROMBOM!  This has the makings of a, "very bad", conspiracy movie!

And how do we know that any wiki entry is either truthful or correct? Most 'popular' entries would/could be corrected/challenged by any number of 'experts'. But as the topics become more esoteric, I suspect less and less verification of facts.

In theory, the Wikipedia is a great idea, but, IMHO, it has yet to earn the respect it needs to be an acceptable source of fact.

As for ROMBOM/RAMBAM/Kinky, their names speak for themselves... eek2.gif They are almost as unbelievable as something like "gunug". Just look at what that spells backward! eek2.gif harhar.gif

But you notice gunug doesn't have a Wikipedia entry so he must be real!

Well, I did submit a story about that swim suit picture we saw a while back, but it never has made it to the visible site. Maybe there is some control over what gets published! May have something to do with not frightening children...Thinking.gif

BTW, do not start a drive optimization routine on a drive that really doesn't need it. TTP has been running over 10 hours now on what is nothing but a back up. There is plenty of contiguous free space. But by the time I realized what I had started, it was too late to stop it; it takes almost as long to unfragment the drive as it takes to clean it up! wallbash.gif

ABD - This is probably proof positive that the Wikipedia people have "standards!"

I was going crazy as the name Rambam was very familiar but I could not remember who he was. Flash 1296 is right and Moses maimonides is one of the great jewish scholars of the middle ages. As far as Kinky Friedman, he is a real person and indeed is runni9ng for governer of Texas!! My brother who is a political reporter has met him and  says he is serious but he takes the approach of a clown and appears deliberately as outrageous as possible.

One of the most moving books I ever read was about the life of Moses Maimonides, "The Doctor from Cordoba."

He had a rough life:

QUOTE
I dismount from my animal, wash my hands, go forth to my patients and entreat them to bear with me while I partake of some slight refreshment, the only meal I take in the twentyfour hours. Then I go forth to attend to my patients, and write prescriptions and directions for their various ailments. Patients go in and out until nightfall, and sometimes even, I solemnly assure you, until two hours or more in the night. I converse with and prescribe for them while lying down from sheer fatigue; and when night falls I am so exhausted that I can scarcely speak.
