Big Problem! Please help!!!!
« on: July 09, 2006, 05:12:59 PM »
I ran Disk Warrior on my G5 1.8 earlier today because everything seems to have slowed down to a crawl - the interminable spinning beach ball, on a continual basis.  Figured it was either a finder problem, or possibly having installed the 10.4.7 update, although it had been sluggish even before that.

The Disk Warrior window did mention it would be  a slower time due to a problem with the disk, although I do not remember the exact wording.

Restarted, and the computer would not start up.  Got the Apple logo and the spinning "sun", the fans started racing, and nothing happened. Unplugged it, which was the only way to turn it off, restarted, and the same thing happened.

I have now restarted from the Disk Warrior CD and am running it again, but I don't have much hope.

Any ideas as to what went wrong and what I can do???? sos.gif  sos.gif

Sounds to me like problems I have had in the past, with earlier versions of OS X.
I keep this Help handy at all times.  Had to use it often for about a month, and haven't had the problem for some weeks -[ will probably hit me now]
Hope this helps.

Most of the information in this Apple Document still applies:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464

Start up in Safe Mode (if you can) and see if that cures things...

Let us know if that helps. smile.gif

On the phone with Apple. Nothing works, not even safe mode.  Guy wanted me to archive and reinstall, but  it won't allow me to preserve settings.  He told me to cancel out of the install and is still consulting!!  Now what?

Well... fancy finding this post! Was just going to ask myself...

My ex is bringing over his Pismo upgraded to G4 550MHz running 10.4.6 which has been "quirky" since I upgraded it to that version. Now he says... it will NOT start up... it stays mired at the grey screen with grey spinning symbol after he hit the same sort of impasse where it froze and he couldn't get it to shut down and had to unplug and pull the battery.

Will try some of these things... starting with a Safe Boot...

Okay, here's where I stand.  Last thing to do was a reinstall with archive.  Could not preserve settings since I had 10.4.7 on the drive. Am up and running, so whatever was wrong was a major software problem which nothing could fix.  I have managed to put back my bookmarks and mail, more or less, but none of my programs are in the dock, none of what used to appear in the menubar is up there, and none of my desktop pictures or screensavers are in system preferences.  I had already swapped most of the folders in my home folder, but I have to assume that these items, including what is usually in system preferences, is not in my users folder. How do I get them back??  I was almost contemplating copying my backup to my HD, but after the problems I had on the HD, not so sure I want to do that.  I have updated to 10.4.6, and I am not going anywhere near 10.4.7.  Somehow I think there is too much of a coincidence between installing it and all these problems.  huh.gif  huh.gif

Whole different problem here... sad.gif Dead hard drive...

I did get it the machine to start with the OS Disk but Disk Utility started repairing it the drive and quit citing some error so... I tried Disk Warrior and that did the trick... the machine started normally. But it was like an archive and install almost... all personal info had to be re-entered the dock items were default, system preferences were default... DW reported a whack of errors including a folder called "Rescued Items" with 198 items in it... I was in the midst of resetting the system preferences when the HD started making a rather loud "click" sound... which my ex says it's done before... then the machine froze like Krazy Glue and game over. Neither DW nor Disk Utility will even see the the HD anymore. Safe Boot never worked.

SMART Status... Verified just before all this happened... huh.gif

Thanks for the suggestions...

Sorry, only just seen this post.
Normally zapping the pram ( apple + alt + P + r ) and then clearing the firmware ( apple + alt + f + o ) - then type clear then mac-boot

Then go into single user mode ( apple + s ) and type fsck -f and when ready type in reboot , This then normally allows normal booting or at least booting into Safe Mode.

Then above is handy to have recorded somewhere for "in times of need!"

From my experience last summer with a failing Powerbook drive, they can fail by degrees. Periodic refusals to start up, various odd behaviors, followed inevitably be a final refusal to repair a hard drive with Disk Utility, attempts with DW that freeze and then...invisible hard drive. Apart from the last couple of steps, occasionally completely normal behavior may occasionally occur, giving one irrational hope that one has "cured" whatever ailed the beast. Oh yeah, been there, done that!

Back up. Always, always, always. Once a day if you're doing valuable work that you wouldn't want to have to recreate. External hard drives are cheap - your time isn't. wink.gif

Dakota, you should be able to copy your documents from the back up - I don't know if I'd advise you to do more than that, since you don't know what exactly caused the problems in the first place. As for system preferences and putting things back into the dock, those things shouldn't take long to do, so I'd be inclined to do them again by hand to avoid copying any corrupted files. Your desktop pics can be copied over - and then used.

As for the 10.4.7 update, I've read a lot of scary stories, (though most have eventually reached a resolution) and so far haven't gone anywhere near it myself, though that's more to do with the fact that I've been too busy than anything else. I'm actually still on 10.4.5 with this G5 - again, no time and a lot of scary reports of things I didn't have the time to deal with if they arose. Not that I don't have a fallback - I do have two complete backups of my HD, and a simple restart is all that is required to get me back in the running again if things go pear-shaped with an update. It's just the time and potential nuisance factor.

I had this happen on a G5 iMAC that turned out to have an overheating problem that was solved by a new logic board.  It just happened to be Diskwarrior that it locked up on and then it couldn't boot the system left behind in time to avoid the overheating lockup.  I was able to repair it with Diskwarrior after the process was finished; although I'd lost some stuff!

I did manage to get most of my files back, some I had to reinstall.  Now I have a printing problem.  Using USB HP7550.  Got it to work for about five minutes and it failed again.  Trashed all software, reinstalled the latest, which I had to download, since th CD would ot work with 10.4.6,  but when I get to the point where I have to choose the printer, once I choose HP, it does not appear in the list, I have to cllick on "more printers".  At that point, whenI tried to add it, I got an error message - 9672.  I have been at this all day with no luck.  The printer does show up in the list on System Prefs, but it has to be added, and this is not going to happen.

HP wants $30.00 to talk to me about this.  No thanks, printer is about four years old.  Had a problem with the Canon scanner also, but reinstalling the software did the trick.  I need a long break from this.  Any  wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif ideas on the printer??

I guess no one has the answer about the error trying to install my printer. Does anyone know where I might go for an answer? Printer does work, will print a test page, just not being accepted by my Mac. sad.gif

Hi, I know you have OSX10.4.7 and HP 7550, but hope this link would help you to get the general idea of how to solve your problem. The link is: http://www.uis.harvard.edu/technology_serv...t.php?number=18.

Good Luck.
